Animation
Key Stage 4, GCSE+ / Scottish Level SG, NQs
Age 14–19
Curriculum Relevance
• Promoting critical awareness of moving image media texts
• Appreciating how animation characteristics create and
communicate meaning
• Understanding the relationship of key concepts to the
production process
• Exploring key communication and decision-making skills
This unit offers a lively study of a popular medium, exploring the craft
and production processes of modern animated texts created for a
variety of audiences. A wide variety of exemplary material is discussed
in detail by key personnel in the industry.
1. An English Classic
The making of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight
A unique insight into the process of rendering a 2,500 line
medieval poem as a contemporary 24-minute hand-drawn
animation. The importance of setting and uses of colour, voice
and music are each explored closely, as are the computer
generated effects of post-production work.
2. Food Commercials
Traditional cel-animation and computer generated imagery
provide contrasting styles for two food manufacture promotions –
from a 2-D line drawing advertisement for Hovis to a stop frame
3-D model animation for an American snack food. The
programme explores both process and craft, from the client’s
initial brief through to the stages of storyboarding, sound
recording, artwork and character design.
3. A Disney Feature Film
Lilo and Stitch
The programme goes behind-the-scenes during the making of a
Disney Pictures’ feature-length, hand-drawn animation that
explores concepts of family, friendship and caring. Technical
wizardry and artistic craft combine to tell the tale of a young girl’s
close encounter with a small, alien ‘dog’.
