Mercer County Woman Funeral Services Professional Funeral Celebrants – Who Are They And What Do They Offer A Family Who Has Lost A Loved One? Thomas M. Maglione, Certified Funeral Celebrant. What has become a new trend in funeral service? The choice of using a Certified Funeral Celebrant, “officiant”, at a funeral, is the answer. What is a “Celebrant”? A “Certified Celebrant” is trained to assist in the planning of a funeral service that is basically secular in nature and to present a personalized life story of the loved one who has died. Families who wish to have a more traditional celebration of their loved one who has had a particular religious affiliation, would find a funeral director reaching out to the denomination of their choice. The use of a Celebrant offers an alternate choice to those families who do not wish to have a ceremony with any religious content. However, the Celebrant, at the request of the family, may be asked to include some prayers or readings of a spiritual nature. A Certified Celebrant meets with the family of the deceased in order to understand who they were, what interests they had, their work experience, community involvement and what impact their lives had on the people they loved. They are trained to help a family create a personal living tribute to their loved one by sharing their stories about them. A bond of trust needs to exist, however, between the family and Celebrant because many times sensitive information or family “secrets” may be shared. Interviewing family members is important in order to gain a real sense about the life of their loved one. The ceremony created for the deceased is ever so important not only because it honors them but is also deeply moving and meaningful for those who are grieving. Ceremony and ritual is very important to families as they begin their journey of grief. Every life should be honored with significant stories that are told about them and shared with those participating in the ritual. Family involvement in presenting this information is a way for them to strengthen their bond and no matter what their belief system is, can help in their transition into living without their loved one. Tom has been in funeral service at Saul’s for 13 years and has served as a Celebrant for the past year and a half. He has participated and completed the In-Sight Institute Celebrant training program. Many families, whom the funeral home has served, have used the services of a Celebrant. Even though the concept is newer in this area, families have been very receptive to the alternative of a traditional religious ceremony. Tom has had great response to the type of Celebrant services he has presided over. The years in funeral service, his compassion and love of interacting with the families, led him to pursue Celebrant training. Tom has been very creative in the manner in which he memorializes the life of the deceased. Candle lighting ceremonies, poetry readings, incorporating music whether it be secular or religious, is strongly encouraged, and distributing meaningful mementos, etc. have become part of what he will incorporate into his tribute, if the family wishes. By tapping into the attentive, sensitive and officiating abilities of a Celebrant, families, along with a Celebrant, can create an extremely personal and meaningful end of life ceremony.
