In addition to being a great honor, it has been a humbling<br />

experience serving as <strong>the</strong> President <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Board <strong>of</strong> Trustees for <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>Flint</strong> <strong>Institute</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Arts</strong> for <strong>the</strong> past year. As you all know, a whirlwind<br />

<strong>of</strong> activity has occurred before our eyes in <strong>the</strong> last twelve months;<br />

<strong>the</strong> Phase I Renovation and addition was completed and <strong>the</strong><br />

museum re-opened in September, while we are presently finishing<br />

Phase II, and preparing for its unveiling this September. The FIA’s<br />

mission is to advance <strong>the</strong> understanding and appreciation <strong>of</strong> art<br />

through collections, exhibitions, and educational programs, and<br />

as Trustees, we have had a front row seat in watching <strong>the</strong> staff<br />

and FIA volunteers selflessly strive to fulfill <strong>the</strong> FIA’s mission.<br />

When <strong>the</strong> doors <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> FIA re-opened last September, such an<br />

event was made possible by <strong>the</strong> tireless work <strong>of</strong> our staff and<br />

many, many volunteers. Particularly, though, in addition to <strong>the</strong><br />

FIA staff, I would like to thank Claire White, <strong>the</strong> chairperson <strong>of</strong> our<br />

Building & Design Committee, who, through her oversight, has<br />

helped us to realize and enjoy an FIA that provides something<br />

for everyone in our community. Additionally, past Board<br />

Presidents Linda Pylypiw, Jim Cummins, and Ernie Hamady, were<br />

instrumental in leading us up to and through <strong>the</strong> renovation<br />

period.<br />

I would also like to thank Sis McArthur, <strong>the</strong> Steering Committee<br />

Chairperson and Kathryn Sharbaugh, our Capital Campaign<br />

Coordinator; it is due to <strong>the</strong>ir untiring efforts that nearly $20<br />

million was raised and our Endowment Campaign is <strong>of</strong>f to such<br />

a great start.
