Dr. Bradberry returned <strong>to</strong> graduate school and was awarded a Doc<strong>to</strong>r <strong>of</strong><br />
<strong>Pharmacy</strong> degree from the University <strong>of</strong> Tennessee <strong>in</strong> 1972. After a yearlong<br />
residency <strong>in</strong> pharmacy at the University <strong>of</strong> Texas at Galves<strong>to</strong>n, he was recruited<br />
<strong>to</strong> jo<strong>in</strong> the faculty at the University <strong>of</strong> Nebraska. Although he was there just<br />
briefly, the experience conv<strong>in</strong>ced him that academia <strong>of</strong>fered an opportunity<br />
<strong>to</strong> be a leader, men<strong>to</strong>r and educa<strong>to</strong>r. “I was delighted <strong>to</strong> see how much I<br />
enjoyed the student contact, and the gratification it brought,” he says.<br />
After leav<strong>in</strong>g Nebraska, Dr. Bradberry spent time at the University <strong>of</strong> Texas,<br />
University <strong>of</strong> Oklahoma and f<strong>in</strong>ally transferred <strong>to</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Tennessee,<br />
where he is now. Dr. Bradberry quips that his resume suggests “I just can’t<br />
keep a job.” Instead, he feels mov<strong>in</strong>g around has provided him with a<br />
broader view <strong>to</strong> share with student and other academic pharmacists through<br />
his teach<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Pr<strong>of</strong>il<strong>in</strong>g the job<br />
Over 3,000 full-time faculty members work <strong>in</strong> the nation’s 82 colleges <strong>of</strong><br />
pharmacy. Thousands more are <strong>in</strong>volved <strong>in</strong> men<strong>to</strong>r<strong>in</strong>g at various levels from<br />
community checkups <strong>to</strong> research fellows. <strong>The</strong>y are <strong>in</strong>volved with teach<strong>in</strong>g,<br />
research, public service and sometimes, patient care. Others work as consultants<br />
for local, state, national, and <strong>in</strong>ternational organizations, teach<strong>in</strong>g<br />
and do<strong>in</strong>g research, much <strong>of</strong> which <strong>in</strong>volves <strong>in</strong>vestigational pharmacotherapeutics,<br />
and epidemiological studies.<br />
<strong>The</strong> University <strong>of</strong> Tennessee <strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pharmacy</strong> enrolls 100 students <strong>in</strong><br />
each class <strong>in</strong> a four-year program. <strong>The</strong>re are 60 faculty members dispersed<br />

As head <strong>of</strong> the pharmacy practice<br />
unit, Dr. Bradberry focuses ma<strong>in</strong>ly<br />
on primary and ambula<strong>to</strong>ry care.<br />
<strong>The</strong> pharmacy curriculum at the<br />
University <strong>of</strong> Tennessee generally<br />
beg<strong>in</strong>s with two and a half years <strong>in</strong><br />
didactic work, which <strong>in</strong>cludes lectures and conferences. “We typically work<br />
with small groups <strong>of</strong> students (about 10) <strong>in</strong> the first year so we can get <strong>to</strong><br />
know them,” Dr. Bradberry says, “and it gives them a perspective <strong>of</strong> pharmacy<br />
