Rosa<strong>to</strong> was encouraged by her pharmacy district manager and supervisor <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>terview for a position <strong>in</strong> the home <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>in</strong> Woonsocket, Rhode Island as<br />

a Pharmaceutical Buyer. Rosa<strong>to</strong> says that she was very fortunate <strong>to</strong> have<br />

been chosen for the job and that it really presented a rare opportunity for<br />

her <strong>to</strong> be promoted up through the ranks <strong>of</strong> the organization. After a year<br />

as an assistant learn<strong>in</strong>g the ropes, she became a full purchas<strong>in</strong>g buyer.<br />

Her responsibilities <strong>in</strong>cluded purchas<strong>in</strong>g products for the three distribution<br />

centers. “I also worked with the DEA, FDA, EPA, OSHA — all those<br />

government agencies — <strong>to</strong> ensure that CVS complied with all regulations,”<br />

she expla<strong>in</strong>s. <strong>Pharmacy</strong> buy<strong>in</strong>g is a specialty most graduat<strong>in</strong>g students don’t<br />

know about, Rosa<strong>to</strong> says. “It is a busy, fast-paced job. I loved it.”<br />

From CVS, Rosa<strong>to</strong> went on <strong>to</strong> a pharmaceutical company <strong>to</strong> be a national<br />

sales account manager. After a year and a half, she was promoted <strong>to</strong> the<br />

bus<strong>in</strong>ess development department where she rema<strong>in</strong>ed for six years before<br />

mov<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> NACDS as Vice President <strong>of</strong> <strong>Pharmacy</strong> Affairs.<br />

Pr<strong>of</strong>il<strong>in</strong>g the job<br />

“In cha<strong>in</strong> s<strong>to</strong>re pharmacy, the sky’s the limit if you’re a go-getter. <strong>The</strong>re are<br />

endless opportunities — you can create the career you want,” Rosa<strong>to</strong> says.<br />

“As a pharmacist, you can practically dictate where you want <strong>to</strong> be — <strong>in</strong><br />

the s<strong>to</strong>re, the field, or the home <strong>of</strong>fice.”<br />

S<strong>to</strong>re-based Pharmacist<br />

Entry-level for graduat<strong>in</strong>g pharmacists is generally <strong>in</strong> a s<strong>to</strong>re. Typically, the<br />

next step is a promotion <strong>to</strong> pharmacy manager. That job entails oversee<strong>in</strong>g<br />

the staff pharmacists, technical help and register help. <strong>The</strong> pharmacy<br />

manager is responsible for <strong>in</strong>ven<strong>to</strong>ry budgets, payroll and schedul<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Field-based Pharmacist<br />

After some tenure as a pharmacy s<strong>to</strong>re manager, there may be opportunities<br />

<strong>in</strong> the field as pharmacy district managers. At this level, the assigned terri<strong>to</strong>ry<br />

may <strong>in</strong>clude 12 <strong>to</strong> 14 s<strong>to</strong>res. A district manager generally spends two days<br />

work<strong>in</strong>g out <strong>of</strong> a regional <strong>of</strong>fice and the other three days travel<strong>in</strong>g from<br />

s<strong>to</strong>re <strong>to</strong> s<strong>to</strong>re. Dur<strong>in</strong>g s<strong>to</strong>re visits, the district manager deals with any issues<br />

that come up, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g questions about <strong>in</strong>ven<strong>to</strong>ry, personnel or general<br />

workflow. District managers also guide and counsel <strong>in</strong>-s<strong>to</strong>re pharmacists.<br />
