work<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> the technology department <strong>of</strong><br />

the cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry are <strong>in</strong>volved with all new<br />

developments which enhance workflow and<br />

save the pharmacist time <strong>to</strong> <strong>in</strong>teract more<br />

with patients. <strong>The</strong>se pharmacists provide<br />

valuable <strong>in</strong>put <strong>to</strong> the operations department<br />

<strong>in</strong> procur<strong>in</strong>g new technology which will<br />

provide an adequate return on <strong>in</strong>vestment.<br />

Government Relations<br />

Pharmacists who work <strong>in</strong> government relations enjoy politics and pharmacy<br />

law. Many who work with<strong>in</strong> the home <strong>of</strong>fice <strong>in</strong> this area have also obta<strong>in</strong>ed<br />

a law degree. With<strong>in</strong> the cha<strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>dustry, these pharmacists are very active<br />

with<strong>in</strong> each state legislature as well as with the federal government. Whether<br />

it is deal<strong>in</strong>g with FDA regulations, new pharmacy state laws, address<strong>in</strong>g the<br />

pharmacist shortage, or provid<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>put on prescription programs for the<br />

elderly, these pharmacists provide education <strong>to</strong> the policymakers <strong>of</strong> the<br />

pharmacy <strong>in</strong>dustry.<br />

<strong>Pharmacy</strong> Purchas<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Most cha<strong>in</strong>s employ pharmacists <strong>to</strong> oversee the procurement <strong>of</strong> pharmaceuticals<br />

with<strong>in</strong> their corporation. Pharmacists who work <strong>in</strong> the purchas<strong>in</strong>g<br />

arena are the first <strong>to</strong> hear about new products before their release. <strong>The</strong>y are<br />

responsible for design<strong>in</strong>g strategies <strong>to</strong> ensure that all s<strong>to</strong>res have access <strong>to</strong><br />

new products as soon as they become available. In addition, these pharmacists<br />

review cl<strong>in</strong>ical data, company pr<strong>of</strong>iles and drug availability <strong>to</strong> decide on<br />

appropriate generic providers for their company. Pharmacists who work <strong>in</strong><br />

the purchas<strong>in</strong>g department play a huge role <strong>in</strong> <strong>in</strong>ven<strong>to</strong>ry management by<br />

purchas<strong>in</strong>g the right drugs at the right price and enhanc<strong>in</strong>g overall pr<strong>of</strong>itability.<br />
