A note from the Principal…
River East Transcona School Division November 2012
Brrr! The cold weather has arrived and that means it is time to
dress warmly. Mitts, toques, scarves, ski pants, warm jackets and
boots are required in order to make recess time comfortable for all
students.
As we approach the winter break, we can look back at a successful
first term. It is evident that there is heightened support for students
by parents. Such support goes a long way to improve student
learning.
Term 1 Report Cards will be sent home on Thursday, November 29th.
Please take the time to read the new report card together with your
child. Find a quiet moment when you can sit down with a cup of hot
chocolate to talk with your child about their successes and to set
goals for the next term. Ask your child to tell you about the things
they enjoyed doing and what they are looking forward to next term.
The parent-child-school connection is a powerful support and is critical
to your child’s continued success. Should parents have questions
or concerns after receiving their child’s report card, they are welcome
to call the teacher(s) involved.
Mark your calendars…
The École Margaret-Underhill Winter Concert will take place on
Wednesday, December 5th at 12:45 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.
To allow all parents/guardians the opportunity to attend this exciting
event, we ask that grandparents, relatives, and other family members
attend École Margaret-Underhill’s Dress Rehearsal on Wednesday,
December 5th at 10 a.m. or the afternoon Winter Concert that takes
place Wednesday, December 5th at 12:45 p.m. In an attempt to reduce
overcrowding, we ask that only parents/guardians attend the
evening concert on Wednesday, December 5th at 6:30 p.m.
Kind regards,
CO-PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
I want to start this message by thanking all of the families who participated in the
Nestle chocolate bar fundraiser. Whether you sold chocolates or made the financial
contribution instead. Thanks to all for your support (obviously some of us do have a
sweet tooth) we raised over $6,000! Way to go EMU families!! What a great start to
the year. I also want to thank the fundraising co-chairs and those who helped them
out with getting the fundraiser organized and counting all the money. This could not
have been done without you.
Our next fundraiser will be Kernels Popcorn, which is back by popular demand! We
have had many requests to do this fundraiser again, because people liked it so much
last year. Look for more information about this coming home in early November.
The t-shirts which PAC purchased for the school have arrived. Samples are on the
bulletin board by the office if you want to take a look.
Mark your calendars! PAC is organizing a yoga evening for parents and children in
the school. It is being done with staff from Peg City Yoga and will take place in either
the gym or library (depending on anticipated participation) on Tuesday November 13
at 7 p.m. We hope to see you there.
We are always interested in hearing from you. If you have any questions or comments
about PAC, please leave a message for Michelle or Lynne in the office at 958-
6832. We will get back to you as soon as possible. Or, if you are interested in coming
to a meeting, our next PAC meeting is November 19, 2012 at 6:30.
Grade 4s played flag football during intramurals in October. Students are improving
their skills each and every game played. The Bombers will surely want to recruit from
this group. The season will end with the mini tournament with École Centrale at Roland
Michner Park, weather permitting. Well done to all the participants who played with great enthusiasm and fair play. Our teams included
the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, Montreal Alouettes, Edmonton Eskimos, Saskatchewan RoughRiders, and Calgary Stampeders.
Our leadership team is well underway. Our booklets have finally arrived.
students are helping out wherever they can with referring and equipment
set up. All are looking forward to preparing stations for Halloween
NEW ! Speed Stacking
This year we have entered to help set a new Guinness
World Record for "Most People Sport Stacking at Multiple
Locations in One Day." The number to beat is
412,259!
Students in grades 3 and 4 will each stack at least 30
minutes on Guinness World Records Day, November
15, 2012.
Grades 2-4 will be skating at Roland Michner Arena in December. More information
will be announced closer to the date.
Thanks to all the students who have been very careful with their library books. It is so important
to return your library books back in the same condition as they were when you signed them out.
We have been purchasing many new books that we want all the students at École Margaret-
Underhill to en- joy.
Dressing for the Weather
Just a reminder that all students must wait outside until
the 8:20 bell (they do wait indoors if it is raining) and in
the mornings the weather can be very cold. Students are
reminded to dress appropriately for each day’s weather.
Lost and Found
We already have many items in our school lost
and found. Please remind your child to look in the
blue boxes by the library to locate any missing
items. Please feel free to look in the lost and
found box when you are dropping off or picking
up your child. It is helpful to write your child’s
name on the inside of clothing/shoes.
Resource Programming :
EMU has started a Volunteer Reading Program! I would like to
take this opportunity to thank the parents who have signed up.
There is still space available if you would like to donate one to
two hours a week on a regular basis to read with our students.
Esther Larson, our Reading Clinician will be back for a training
session. Please come and join us.
