How can I help my son
or daughter? Where can I
find information?
What happens now?
Introduction
Well, the time is finally here.
Your son or daughter is
moving on to postsecondary
education. They’re excited,
making plans, buying supplies,
checking out websites and
discussing their choices with
friends.
You, on the other hand, have
a million questions. Sure, you
trust their decision and know
they’re taking everything into
consideration. After all, you
helped them reach this point.
You gave them the skills they
need to carefully select the
right place for their education.
Perhaps you looked through
the brochures with them and
4
maybe even attended the tour
days. Still ... it would be nice
to know as much as they do
about the place they’re going to
attend, wouldn’t it?
That’s why we’ve
developed Smart Talk.
It’s a resource for parents,
designed to help you have an
informed conversation with
your son or daughter about
his or her plans. It gives you
information on the processes
they need to follow and the
services they can expect to find
in their first weeks. If we give
you the same information they
receive, then you’ll be able to
talk to them with credibility.
Now that’s Smart.
?
What should my son or
daughter do first? What’s
the most important
advice I can give them?
Before Humber
READ EVERYTHING
Humber has rules, regulations,
policies, and deadlines that
students must be aware of. If
we have any advice for you to
pass on to your student, it’s
this, READ EVERYTHING.
In our attempts to ensure that
your son or daughter gets
enough information, we can
sometimes overload them
with material. That unopened
piece of mail may contain the
papers to confirm their seat in
a program, the deadline date to
pay their fees, the application
for housing and more. It can be
overwhelming. Still the advice
holds, READ EVERYTHING.
VISIT
We hope that you and your
student have already visited
the campus to look at the
facilities and see how the place
suits them. That probably
played an important part in
their decision to attend, and
studies have found that visiting
makes a critical difference to
their eventual success. When
you’re comfortable in your
environment, know your way
around, and are generally
clear about the processes,
you can relax and get busy
with what you’ve come to
do. In your son or daughter’s
case, that’s learning. So we
encourage them - and you -
to walk around the campus
and talk to people who work
and study here. Look at the
athletic facilities, the pool, the
residence, and the labs they
may study in. Drive around the
neighbourhood and see where
the malls and health facilities
are or the location of the
nearest bus stop. To arrange a
campus tour, click on www.
How often should
I call? Visit? Email?
Send Things?
At Humber
Your student has finally
arrived at Humber. Classes
have begun. They’ve started to
settle into their routines, and
if they’ve moved away from
home into residence or an
apartment, now what?
THE TRANSITION
This is a challenging time for
your son or daughter. Even the
most sophisticated student
finds an enormous change
from high school to Humber.
First there’s the freedom. Yes,
we expect them to attend
classes, but now it’s up to them
to take care of themselves by
getting up in the morning,
taking the time to study, and
perhaps juggling a social and
work life. In the beginning,
some are better at this than
others.
6
Don’t worry. After the first few
weeks most students recognize
that missing classes means
missing information and
marks. They realize that with
freedom comes responsibility,
and most figure out the best
way to make it all work. If
they need assistance there is
a complete support system
on campus to help them out.
Getting involved on campus
not only helps students make
the transition to college
life, but also dramatically
increases their chances of
success. Encourage your son
or daughter to get involved
in campus life. Research
indicates that those students
who are involved in their
school are much more likely
to graduate. Hey, let’s be
honest–it also looks great on a
resumé (see Service pages for
opportunities).
TO VISIT OR
NOT TO VISIT?
Your student is trying to make
his or her own way now. They’ve
planned out their room and
settled into routines that help
them feel in control of their
lives. This means that if you
simply drop in, you may not
be as welcomed as you would
have wished. They may have an
afternoon of studying planned
or are going out to meet friends.
They love you but ...
So instead remind them of
your support with a letter or
email now and then. Send care
packages. There isn’t a student
alive who doesn’t like free stuff.
In the middle of juggling their
limited amount of spending
money, they may forget to buy
new socks or find that chocolate
is an indulgence they can’t afford
later in the month. Feel free to
splurge. What they don’t like,
their friends will!
HOMESICKNESS
If your student has moved
away from home to attend
Humber, they have more to
get used to than a strange
campus. They have to make
new friends, find new places
to shop and get used to a new
city. Some students may find
this overwhelming.
They may or may not share
their concerns with you.
They want you to see them
as mature, young adults, able
to handle their own lives. Just
remember that everything
can change from one day to
the next. Overnight, it seems,
they’ll find someone in their
class who shares their sense
of humour or who likes their
kind of music. So listen. Stay
upbeat. Remind them that
you’re there for them. Remind
them that we’re here for them.
What safety procedures
are in place at Humber?
Will They Be Safe?
Like most parents, you are
concerned about the wellbeing
of your student. Toronto
is a major city, and Humber
is a large campus. How will
they cope? What is security
like in residence? On Campus?
In the community? All good
questions.
Humber has a complete
Public Safety Department.
Its services include:
• External lighting in parking
lots and on walkways
• Emergency telephones
throughout the campus
linked to Humber security
• 24-hour security patrols on
campus, seven days a week
• 24-hour monitored
dispatch desk
• Live-in residence
administrative staff, plus
regular security patrols
throughout residence
• Campus Walk Program
provides a walking partner
for students who wish to
be accompanied to their
vehicle on the property, to
the campus residence, or to
the perimeter of the campus
property
• Comprehensive information
on personal safety
Humber Services
These services are in place for
one specific purpose: to ensure
that your son or daughter has
a successful, meaningful and
respectful experience while
studying at Humber. The
majority of these services are at
no additional cost for full-time
students and can be accessed
simply by dropping in or
making an appointment.
Students receive a Student
Handbook which outlines
these student services and
details things like hours
of operation and campus
location. Please help direct
your students to the HSF
handbook and to the services
you believe would be helpful
to them.
Are there jobs on campus?
How do students apply?
CAREER & EMPLOYMENT SERVICES
North: H107 | Lakeshore: H201
Students attend Humber to
acquire a meaningful position
upon graduation. For many,
the job search must start
earlier. They need to find
part-time and/or summer
employment to help pay for
their education or a work
placement position as part of
their program.
We emphasize providing
students with the information
and skills they need to ensure
that their job search is a
successful one. Students need
only to remember that this is
a team effort. Their success is
directly equal to the time and
effort they are willing to give to
their search.
Our services include:
• Resumé and interview
assistance
• Fax, photocopiers, computers
for job search (no charge)
• Assistance with personal
marketing, career planning,
resumés, cover letters,
interviews
full-time job listings through
Jobs on campus:
Approximately 900 jobs are
listed on campus through our
department, in areas such as
athletics, residence, HSF, the
library and so on. Advise your
son or daughter to apply early
for these positions (even mid
August when many are first
posted), as they go quickly. To
What can my son or daughter do if
they feel that their program may not
be right for them? How does Humber
COUNSELLING AND DISABILITY SERVICES
North: B112 | Lakeshore: A120
Sometimes the road to your
son or daughter’s eventual
success can be a bumpy one.
Perhaps the program he or she
chose isn’t a good fit. Perhaps
they need help settling in.
Maybe they love their program
but one or two courses are
particularly challenging. That’s
where we come in.
12
Our services provide
personal, academic and
career advice for your son or
daughter. Our professional
counsellors have years of
experience, and everything is
completely confidential. Visit:
We also provide services
for students with learning
disabilities, mobility
impairment, vision
impairment, serious medical
conditions, ADD, or other
disabling conditions.
These services are free and
can they access
this service?
FINANCIAL AID
North: D133 | Lakeshore: A118
Putting a student through
college or university is a major
expense. We assume you
have already investigated the
Ontario Student Assistance
Program and determined if
your son or daughter qualifies.
Students can apply online and
check their status by visiting
osap.gov.on.ca. If they are
going to receive a loan from
the government, they will
need to visit the OSAP
Distribution area when
they come for Orientation.
(Signs and staff will direct
them to the location). They
must bring their SIN card, a
valid Canadian government
issued photo ID and banking
information (preferably a void
cheque).
regarding OSAP/financial
changes frequently and we’re
always looking for suggestions
for improvement. And, yes,
we do have national brands
throughout the campus to satisfy
those special cravings – Tim
Hortons, Mr. Sub, Pizza Pizza,
and Williams Fresh Café. Plus
we also have many other brands
including Second Cup, Extreme
Pita, Mucho Burrito, Teriyaki
Are the lots safe?
PARKING
http://srs.humber.ca
North: D133 | Lakeshore: A118
More and more students are
choosing to drive to Humber
each year. If your son or
daughter wishes to park in
campus lots, he or she must
apply for a spot as early as
possible.
• Rates vary depending on
location
• For occasional use, students
may prefer Pay-Per-Entry
Parking ($7 coin or credit
card)
18
Safety
All lots are patrolled regularly
by our security staff. As
well, emergency telephones
are located throughout the
lots, and our Campus Walk
Program is available for those
who wish to be walked to their
car in the evening. If there
is car trouble, our HEART
(Humber Emergency Auto
Response Team) staff will be
there in minutes.
Where can my son or
daughter go for help with
an academic course? How
can they brush up on
their study skills? Where
can they go to find a
volunteer opportunity?
PEER PROGRAMS – PEER TUTORING
North: H217 Lakeshore: H201 (Peer Tutoring)
Peer Tutoring
Peer tutoring is a service
available to students who need
help with an academic course.
Students can meet with a tutor
on a one-to-one basis, or they
can visit one of the learning
centres for assistance with
writing or math. Students can
sign up to be tutored in up
to 2 courses a semester, for a
small fee of $10 for 8 hours of
tutoring.
Also offered are the Learning
Skills Workshops. Students
can attend by dropping in to
one of the many workshops
offered over the course of the
semester. Workshops are 50
minutes in length and cover
topics ranging from Time
Management, Exam Prep,
Group Work and Presentation
Skills. Visit our website for
more details.
www.humber.ca/peertutoring
Peer Mentoring
Peer Mentors are upper year
students who volunteer to
meet with new students on
campus. Peer Mentors help
new students transition
to campus life and postsecondary
expectations. www.
humber.ca/peermentoring
Volunteering
Humber offers many service
learning opportunities for
students to get involved and
volunteer on campus or in
the community. Students can
volunteer to be orientation
leaders, or work with local
youth. Also offered is an
Alternative Spring Break
program that encourages
students to spend their reading
week in February volunteering
abroad. Past trips have included:
Mississippi with Habitat for
Humanity, and the Dominican
Republic with Orphanage
Outreach.
How do you know if
someone is a student?
How do you monitor
access to the services and
facilities?
PHOTO ID
http://srs.humber.ca
North: D133 | Lakeshore: A118
We are as concerned as you are
about ensuring that Humber
is a safe place for your son or
daughter. We have a number
of security measures in place.
Among them is the Photo ID
program. We encourage all
students to have an ID card
before they begin classes.
The Photo ID card allows
access to places like the
Library, Athletics areas and
the Residence. It also grants
access to a number of services,
such as Peer Tutoring, Health
Services and more.
20
How it works:
• The Photo ID card is the
official ID for students in
full-time attendance at the
college. Photo ID is required
for borrowing materials
from the library, accessing
the athletic facilities and the
student pub. It may also be
needed when applying for
student discounts at on or
off-campus organizations.
Students can upload
their photos and apply
for their Photo ID at
http://srs.humber.ca
How does Humber
manage to create a safe,
respectful learning
environment with so
many diverse students?
POLICIES
As a learning institution,
we feel it is our mandate to
encourage freedom of speech,
thought and expression. At the
same time, we emphatically
support a campus environment
that is free of discrimination
and harassment of any kind.
In fact, we have a number
of policies that are strongly
adhered to within our
classrooms, residence, labs
and public spaces. Many of
these policies are included
in materials distributed to
students at Orientation (e.g.
Student Handbook) and
available for viewing online.
Does public transit
connect to Humber’s
campuses?
PUBLIC TRANSIT
Both Humber’s North and
Lakeshore campuses are
connected to the TTC and, to
a greater or lesser extent, other
transit services in Ontario. The
Humber Students’ Federation
provides information on all the
major transit systems and sells
tickets on campus.
North
The TTC, Mississauga,
Brampton Transit and GO
buses all have regular stops
directly in front of this campus.
All TTC routes connect
with subway stops for transit
throughout Toronto.
Lakeshore
TTC buses connect this
campus with the Kipling
subway station, while streetcars
on Lakeshore Boulevard
connect to either Mississauga
transit in the west or to the
Do I have access to
my son or daughter’s
records? Is there a central
location for admissions
information? Where do
they get their timetables?
REGISTRAR & ENROLMENT SERVICES
North: D133 | Lakeshore: A118
Now that your student is
registered with Humber, the
Privacy Act requires that we
communicate only with him
or her. This means that if you
wish to know their academic
standing or their attendance
record, you must ask them.
http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/p-
21/index.html
The Registrar’s Office is the
one-stop shop for almost
everything related to
admissions and enrolment. It’s
where your son or daughter
should start if he or she isn’t
sure where to go or who to see
for answers.
Online
By accessing http://srs.
humber.ca, your student can:
• Check the status of their
Admissions applications
• View their grades
• Plan their budget (online
budget calculator)
• Check their OSAP and
scholarship information
• Apply for bursaries and Work
Study
• Print their timetables
(accessible online only)
• Change their contact
information or Personal
Identification Number (PIN)
• Review their payment
options for tuition or
residence
• Pay fees by credit card
• Check the results of the
Computerized Placement
Test (CPT)
In Person
If students prefer to access
the above services in person,
they will use an automated
numbering system, which
greatly facilitates the process.
An attendant will assess
their situation, determine
whose assistance they need
and provide them with a
number that lets them know
approximately how soon they
will be served. By viewing
the monitors throughout
the waiting area, they can
determine whether or not they
wish to wait or come back later.
IMPORTANT DATES
Humber is a large place with
over 18,000 students. To
help coordinate important
processes, Humber produces
an Academic Calendar
for our various program
formats – postsecondary
and postgraduate, degrees
and so on. The dates ensure
that your student receives
the information he or she
needs in a timely fashion and
is a reminder of upcoming
deadlines.
If only for your own peace
of mind, this might be a
good list to prominently post
somewhere in your home.
If your son or daughter
commutes to Humber from
home, the calendar is a
(not so) subtle reminder
of processes to remember,
such as paying fees, midterms
and so on. If they live
away from home, you could
choose to remind them that
these dates are coming soon.
A copy of the Academic
Calendar is available at:
