ANIA-CARING: A Merged Organization
In February of 2008, we shared with you an announcement of CARING’s intent
to sit down with the board members of the American Nursing Informatics
Association (ANIA) to begin the evaluation of how our two groups had
duplication and to evaluate if there was an opportunity for an organizational
merger. We followed that with a survey of both memberships to find out what you
thought, and this last December both memberships voted on the merger. The
response was overwhelmingly in favor of the merge. The new, merged
organization is the largest Nursing Informatics association in the United States
with greater than 3,000 members in the 50 states and 34 countries worldwide.
CARING, formerly known as Capital Area Roundtable on Informatics in
Nursing, established in 1982, was developed and organized by area nurses to
provide a forum for the advancement of automated healthcare information
systems. CARING grew over time to be a
nursing informatics organization
advancing the delivery of quality
healthcare through the integration of
informatics in practice, education,
administration, and research with
members in 50 states and 34 countries.
The American Nursing Informatics
Association (ANIA), established in 1992,
provided the first opportunity for
informatics nurses in Southern California
to meet and network. Similarly to
CARING, ANIA grew to be a national
organization providing networking,
education and information resources to
enrich and strengthen the roles of nurses
in the field of informatics with members
in 50 states and 5 countries.
The new organization, ANIA-CARING,
is named to reflect the history of each
organization as well as to maintain name
recognition throughout the merger process.
We have jointly sponsored the ANIA-
CARING conference since 2007 - the
results and feedback from the participants
has been very strong, and at the joint
conference in 2008 a vote was cast that
clearly supported the idea of merging the
two organizations.
Welcome
from the Editor
Greetings and welcome to the last issue
of Vol 24 of the CARING
Newsletter! This issue comes to you at an
important time in the organizations history;
the merger of both CARING and ANIA
organizations. The preparation to
accomplish this took many hours of
planning and collaboration among both
board member groups. This current issue
focuses on the outcome of their planning
and features the changes and positions
which will commence the newly formed
organization.
During the past year my role as
newsletter editor has been interesting as I
continued to build contacts with other
colleagues across the country and the world.
I enjoyed my time as the editor and would
like to thank all members who assisted me
in editing over the past year, your
contributions were appreciated. I have asked
to step down as editor so I can pursue other
opportunities. I will be passing on the baton
Welcome from the Editor
continued from page 1
secretary. Denise has been the secretary for ANIA and comes to us with a rich experience
in her role.
I will leave you with a story. A few years ago my family and I took a vacation in Maui
Hawaii. On our last day we decided to take a ride on the road to Hana since we heard it
was a great place. Well the drive on that winding two lane road along the cliffs, which had
no guardrails by the way, was a very interesting trip. We were to learn that the destination
was not the featured high point of the trip since there really isn’t anything much in Hana
but a beach, yes a nice beach. The real high point of that trip was all the places we stopped
along the way which were just beautiful; towering waterfalls, streams, unblemished sights.
I think about our trip many times when we reflect on life’s journey. It really isn’t about the
destination it is about the journey and all the things you do along the way that make the
destination worthwhile.
As we move forward in informatics it is important to collaborate with each other. The
newly merged organization provides additional platforms and opportunities for greater
collaboration and unification in Nursing Informatics. I’d encourage you to join the
organization and participate as well in your regional group. Being involved and bring ideas
and experiences forward to share with each other will help define our future. Don’t forget
to register on-line for the annual conference which will be hosted in Boston this April.
A thank you goes out to Kathleen Hunter for contributing this issues book review. All
members can contribute by writing for an upcoming newsletter. We welcome your
contributions they can be sent to editor@ania-caring.org. Enjoy!!
ANIA-CARING: A Merged Organization
continued from page 1
During our evaluation of both organizations, we found some areas of clear
duplication of services, while in other areas we found some key differences. We
found similarity in our mission statements, in our goals for our member
communities, and in our desire to provide networking opportunities for our
members for the purpose of professional development. We found differences in
how we carried out these goals and how our two organizations were organized and
structured. For example, ANIA holds a national conference with hundreds of
attendees in an effort to share knowledge and foster networking. CARING has
traditionally provided regional or web-based education as well as national
networking via dinners, receptions, and email communications.
Our intent with the merger is to create synergy with our strengths and add
additional value to our organization by leveraging areas where we currently differ.
The joint boards have been working diligently on a plan to merge the boards, the
by-laws, and memberships to better serve our members.
ANIA-CARING is a leading Nursing Informatics organization dedicated to
advancing the field of nursing informatics through communications, education,
research and professional activities. There will be a celebration of this merger at
the upcoming annual conference to be held in Boston, MA on April 22-24, 2010
titled, “Re-Evolution in Nursing Informatics.” For further information, please see
our website at www.ania-caring.org.
We sincerely appreciate your support of this merger.
Frequently Asked Questions
Last revised: Nov. 25, 2009
1. What will be the new name for our organization?
ANIA – CARING will be the new name of our combined organization.
This name was chosen to reflect the history of each organization as well as
to maintain name recognition throughout the merger process.
2. How did the ANIA-CARING Board of Directors arrive at
names/positions for the 2010 board of directors?
The appointed board of directors for 2010 is comprised of individuals from
both ANIA and CARING. Many of these appointed board members are in
previously elected active-board terms from their respective organizations
and/or have un-completed terms from their previous board election. Within
this group, a consensus was drawn as to who would serve as our initial
officers and roles based on prior experience and roll-off timeline.
3. When will be our next general board election?
The first election of our new board will occur in the spring of 2011. At that
time, the general membership will nominate and elect four new candidates
to the board. In the years following, another four board member positions
will be up for election. Also at this election a nomination committee
member will be elected to help oversee the election (see Article VII in the
bylaws).
4. What happened to student membership?
The CARING organization never had a student rate nor saw a need given
the low annual due structure. ANIA had a student rate, but with low
adoption. In the merged organization, yearly dues are being structured so all
members can benefit at one rate, including students.
5. I am interested in corporate membership, how can I learn more?
Corporate Membership is a great way to support ANIA-CARING plus
obtain benefits of exhibiting at the Annual ANIA-CARING conference and
membership for several in the organization. Corporate Membership details
will be soon available on the ANIA-CARING website. Current interest and
questions can be directed to Membership Chair Susan K Newbold,
membership@ania-caring.org
6. How will member benefits change?
Combining ANIA and CARING will allow members of the new ANIA-
CARING organization to enjoy all the value of the old organizations,
including:
• Larger involvement by all in our e-list and community knowledge sharing
• Continuing our Annual conference
• Continuation of the CARING newsletter
• Resuming multiple on-line webinars for remote education
• Maintaining active support and coordination of Weekend Immersion in
Nursing Informatics (WINI) events.
• Continued active involvement with the Alliance for Nursing Informatics
(ANI)
ANIA-CARING: A Merged Organization
continued from page 3
• Four new regional structures (with board-level coordinator) to support
members across the country with regional activities and regional
educational events.
• Multiple opportunities for members to be involved on one of many
national committees that will soon be formed
• Additional benefits under-development will be shared as soon as they are
finalized.
7. What are the 4 regions outlined as part of the new organizational
structure?
Four geographic regions will be created to help regionalize our membership.
The purpose of these regions is to preserve our “local” feel while also
maintaining a structure that is “national.” Each region will have a boardlevel
regional coordinator – responsible for hosting local educational events,
fostering a local networking community, reporting up regional news and
events to the national group, and disseminating information down from the
national group into each region. As we initiate this structure, we have
assigned membership into one of four regions:
• Region I – WA, OR, CA, ID, NV, MT, WY, CO, AZ, NM, AK, HI
• Region II – ND, SD, NE, KS, OK, TX, MN, IA, MO, AR, LA, WI, IN,
IL & International Members.
• Region III – MI, OH, PA, NY, NJ, VT, ME, NH, MA, RI, CT, NJ
• Region IV – MD, VA, DE, WV, KY, TN, NC, SC, GA, FL, AL, MS
8. I reside outside of the United States, what region do I belong to?
We continue to welcome our international members and have asked our
Region II coordinator to take into account these members as we plan and
roll out this new structure. While the current structure does not have a
region uniquely devoted to only international membership, it is not beyond
the future structure as our regions are designed to flex and accommodate as
our organization grows.
9. What will happen to the electronic discussion list?
The new board has an active project underway to evaluate the use of our
discussion list and identify a plan to enhance this benefit while also
maintaining ease-of-use.
10. What will happen to the two organization’s existing websites?
The website content will be merged and rebranded under the domain name
www.ania-caring.org. Member's usernames and passwords will not change.
11. Will there still be a yearly conference?
Yes, we will continue our yearly conference. We will also continue the
practice of expanding host cities to reach the greatest percentage of our
membership.
12. Will free webinar’s continue?
We will continue to offer webinars as frequently as once a quarter as
another method of offering CEUs and opportunities to interact with other
nurses interested in informatics.
continued on page 5
ania-CARING • Page 4
ANIA-CARING: A Merged Organization
continued from page 4
13. What volunteer opportunities will there be in the new organization?
Our organization runs on the volunteerism of our membership. If you are
interested in volunteering we would welcome your participation and can only
grow stronger with your involvement. Contact any one of the active board
members to get engaged and propose how you can help (hints: host a regional
meeting, write an article, present via webcast on an area of your expertise,
create a networking event, volunteer on a national committee, mentor a
student, write a policy or white paper, serve on a standards group, etc.).
14. Will there be a Job Bank in the new organization and how will it
function?
We will continue the job bank as move forward with our new organization.
Our existing job boards continue to provide high value to our members as
well as provide supplemental income that funds organizational efforts.
15. As a source of revenue, ANIA currently offers rental of their member
mailing list - will that practice continue and if so can I opt-out?
Currently for ANIA, the membership list for sale includes only the name
and address of members who have agreed to participate. Members have
always had the option to opt out. Some members feel this is an added
benefit as they learn about new opportunities in the industry as well to assist
in representation as a nursing informatics professional. This benefit is
currently under consideration by the new merged board and if it is
continued the ability to opt out will be communicated and maintained.
16. What will dues be for the new organization?
A significant task for the merger committee was to define a three year
budget and financial plan. Our task was to define a structure that allowed us
to create one combined group, honor all past membership contributions and
terms, as well as to fund the organization as we move forward and expand
our reach of impact. We are committed and have operational plans in place
to provide additional webcasts, scholarship programs, quarterly newsletters,
and a yearly conference. As we evaluated these current and future plans we
landed on a dues structure of $40.00 per year. While this rate represents an
increase from what current CARING members are paying, it is a decrease
from what current ANIA members are paying. The new board is confident
that the benefits will continue to outweigh cost and will continue to report
annually on how this membership money is managed and used in our yearly
operational budget.
17. In the intent of merger document, what does the term “Inter alia”
mean?
It means “among other things”. For example: “The President’s wide-ranging
interview covered, inter alia, health care reform.”
18. In the intent of merger document, what does “Plea of nolo contendere”
Informatics and Nursing: Competencies and
Applications, 3rd edition, (2010).
Lippincott Williams & Wilkins
by Linda Q Thede and Jeanne P. Sewell
In this 456-page, soft-cover book, Linda Thede
and Jeanne Sewell provide the awaited update to
the previous edition, published in 1999. The authors
wrote every chapter, except for two: chapters 24
and 25.
Informatics and Nursing: Competencies and Applications is written for three
audiences - the person interested in learning something about nursing informatics,
students in a formal course on this topic, and students in a curriculum that
includes nursing informatics as one strand. Baccalaureate students appear to be
the primary student group. Content, organized into units, informs first-year or
introductory courses in informatics (Units I and II), supports informatics content
at any point in a curriculum (Unit III), for senior-level courses (Units IV and V),
and in Unit VI, enables the building of a discrete course. The units are titled as
follows: Information Basics, Computers and Your Professional Career,
Information Competency, The New Healthcare Paradigm, Healthcare Informatics,
and Computer Uses in Healthcare Beyond Clinical Informatics. An index is at the
end of the text.
Each unit begins with a brief introduction that lists the encompassed chapters
and provides an overview of the content to come. Each chapter provides learning
objectives and a list of key terms, at the beginning. The key terms appear in bold
type in the chapter. At the end of each chapter, the authors list several exercises,
titled Applications and Competencies. Extensive reference lists conclude each
chapter. Tables, figures, and selective footnotes enhance the written text. The units
can be read in any order, although the novice would benefit from starting with the
first unit.
The first unit, Information Basics, covers five chapters. The focus on
informatics beginners is evident here, through the details about computer
hardware, including tips on maintaining magnetic disks; instruction on using
common features of computers (toolbars, menus, cutting and pasting, printing, and
file management); and extensive, informative discussion of computer networks
with emphasis on the Internet.
Unit II, with five chapters, focuses on helping the reader use computers for
professional activities. This unit is a treasure trove of information on up-to-date
methods for networking via email and discussion lists; word processing; designing
and creating presentations; understanding spreadsheets; creating simple databases;
and understanding the use of complex databases, including knowledge discovery.
While classified for introductory-level readers, even sophisticated informatics
nurses can glean new understandings from this material.
Information competency is the focus of the third unit. The authors discuss the
Internet, again, but this time with attention to its use for examining and applying
evidence-based practice resources. The other two chapters address techniques and
technologies for searching online bibliographic databases and using mobile
computing technology for improving nursing practice. Explanations, with
Book Review
accompanying illustrations and tables, are sufficiently in-depth to enable a novice
searcher to be comfortable applying the material without being overly technical
and overly detailed.
In Unit IV, personal electronic health records, consumer empowerment,
interoperability, and nursing documentation concepts and technologies express the
emerging health paradigm of active, informed consumer involvement in health
and health care. The discussion on electronic health records focuses primarily on
the concept of the personal health record. The chapter on consumer empowerment
highlights key concepts and issues. The authors provide a rich explanation and
illustration of the basics and complexities of interoperability, including
international and national work on technical standards. The title of the last chapter
in this unit, Nursing Documentation: Is it Valuable?, is somewhat misleading.
Instead of an extensive discussion on the value of nursing documentation, the last
chapter in this unit predominantly explores the use of standardized terminologies.
Unit V begins with the reminder that health care is an interdisciplinary venture.
The subsequent chapters address concepts related to the discipline of informatics
in general and nursing informatics in particular; electronic information systems in
health care, both basic and specialized; and telehealth. These chapters are current
in content and useful for nurses in all settings.
Unit IV explores opportunities to improve nursing decision making in a variety
of healthcare settings, beyond a strict focus on clinical informatics. In the chapter
on education, the focus is on the development and enhancement of e-learning.
Readers learn, in a subsequent chapter, about administration tools that enable
leaders and managers to enhance their effectiveness and the productivity of their
organizations. The third chapter in this unit shares insights on applying informatics
to research. The final chapter of this unit, and of the book, explores legal and
ethical issues particular to the presence of informatics in nursing practice.
Thede and Sewell’s book is definitely an asset for the beginner in nursing
informatics. Written clearly, the chapters are well illustrated, accurate, and current.
Undergraduate nursing students and graduate nursing students not specializing in
nursing informatics also have an excellent resource in this book.
Curiously, although the title of the book and each chapter include wording
about competencies and applications, the authors do not establish a conceptual or
theoretical framework for the text. This lack of an organizing framework is a
serious detriment. The authors do not define or discuss competency as a concept.
Thede and Sewell do not explain why they chose competencies and applications
as part of the title and as exercises in each chapter. In the first chapter, one
paragraph describes scholarly work on identifying nursing- informatics
competencies, but leaves out the competencies presented in Nursing Informatics
Scope and Standards of Practice (American Nurses Association, 2008).
Some minor issues are the use of Wikipedia in citations and some dated
citations that are not seminal works. A glossary of all the terms introduced in the
chapters would enhance this useful resource.
Thede and Sewell have produced a readable, informative, up-to-date, text on
nursing informatics. Overall, this text is an excellent addition to our resources for
novices and undergraduate students.
