18 WORLD NEWS Army February 4, 2010 SIX ADF members serving as UN Military Observers in Sudan received their Australian Service Medal and United Nations Medal for service late last year at Australia House in Khartoum. In a small ceremony held on November 18, Commander of the Australian Contingent for the ADF contribution to the United Nations Mission in Sudan (UNMIS) Lt-Col Glenn Taylor recognised the significant contribution the six had made during their six-month deployment. During the ceremony, Lt-Col Taylor presented Australian Contingent 9 UNMOs (pictured left to right) Maj Brian Ardely, Capt Paul Manuel, Capt Sharon Cord, Capt Luke Hodda, Capt Peter Amaricai and Leut Katrina Gosper with their medals. Members of the current contingent were also there to hear Lt-Col Taylor congratulate and thank the UNMOs for their work in “challenging and, sometimes, difficult circumstances”. The UN Medal is awarded to defence force and police members who have served at least 90 days’ service as part of UNMIS. Photos by LS Paul Berry Employers get taste of life on other side HEAVY rain did not dampen the spirits of Ex Boss Lift participants in Jahore Bahru, Southern Malaysia. Employers of 15 Defence reservists travelled to Malaysia in December to take part in the three-day program conducted by the Cadet, Reserve and Employer Support Division. The soldiers demonstrated their skills by performing a section attack and night live-fire demonstration on the Pulada range. Employers lived on ration packs and took part in weapons lessons giving them a first-hand look at the training reservists take part in during their time in Malaysia. Parliamentary Secretary for Defence Mike Kelly said employers visited soldiers from NSW-based 5 Bde, currently on a three-month deployment as Rifle Company Butterworth 88. “We feel it is important for employers to understand reservists develop skills during their military service that can directly benefit their businesses.” Dr Kelly said.
