A focus on
war skills

ONE of the key initiatives
rolled out with the introducion
of the Adaptive Army
has been the Army Training
Continuum (ATC).
It provides the continuous
development of the Army’s individual
and collective training
regimes to enhance capability
– a great phrase, but what does
t really mean and how does it
ffect the average soldier?
In a nutshell, the ATC is the
means through which we can
hape training to provide a beter,
combat-ready soldier.
It ensures what we are doing
s relevant to all lines of operaion
and will see a marked
mprovement in our foundation
ar-fighting skills.
Most soldiers are familar
with the individual training
elivered by training schools
nd most soldiers have also paricipated
in collective training
ctivities at unit level or on exerises
to prepare for their role on

operations. What has been lacking
is a link between individual
and collective training regimes
to ensure we really do “fight as
we train and train as we fight”.
The ATC emphasises the
interdependence of individual
and collective training.

If, for example, the objective
of all Army training is conducting
successful operations, and
it is, then all training should be
relevant to that goal.

trade training and leadership

training, as well as collective
training activities, should all be
relevant to our role on operations.
The ATC also recognises
learning from experience and
allows that to influence the way
we train and fight.
This doesn’t mean our training
becomes focused on “the
war”; we have to remain prepared
for any contingency.
It means some lessons will
influence the way we do things
now, in a specific theatre of
operations, while others may
be more foundational and will
influence our training through
doctrine and training management
packages.
All soldiers and trainees
should have a fundamental
knowledge of the ATC for them
to provide input.
