BRISBANE farewelled its largest
deployment of troops to leave
Enoggera since World War II on
January 20 and marked a major milestone
in the re-emergence of 7 Bde as
a deployable formation.
About 1200 soldiers will deploy on
operations to the Middle East and East
Timor as 7 Bde assumes the role as the
Army’s deployed brigade.
Personnel are drawn from units
across Australia but based predominantly
on units from the South Queenslandbased
7 Bde.
It was one of the last official functions
for departing Comd 7 Bde Brig
Steve Day.
“The years of being drip-fed resources
have created a lean and hungry culture
in the brigade and that is not a bad
thing,” Brig Day said.
“That hungry culture has been
retained; the soldiers are full of initiative,
and ready to go.”
Brig Day said the Brisbane-based
soldiers were second to none.
“No-one in the world produces better
soldiers than Australia does – there are
some that do as well, but none better.
The soldiers will form MTF 1,
Timor-Leste Task Group and FSU 3.
7 Bde has already farewelled Secdet
“The long time
away can be
tough for the
soldiers as well
as loved ones,
so I really thank
family and
friends for their
support.”
and bold
16, mostly from 2/14 LHR (QMI), while
soldiers from 139 Sig Sqn deployed to
the Middle East with FCU 3.
A farewell at Holsworthy had already
been held for the 140 communicators
from FCU 3 (Op Slipper) and the FCE 3,
which will be deployed to Op Astute in
East Timor.
Defence Personnel, Materiel and
Science Minister Greg Combet reviewed
the Brisbane parade hosted by Comd 1
Div Maj-Gen Michael Slater.
7 Bde’s year-long preparation
included its combined-arms activity, Ex
Diamond Dollar, and the ADF’s major
joint combined arms training on Ex
Talisman Saber.
More recently, deploying forces conducted
mission-specific training, culminating
with MREs to test the competency
of the deploying units.
Pte David Deitz from MTF 1 said the
long training had been successful.
“Thanks to the lead-up training and
leadership in 6RAR we are ready for
Afghanistan,” Pte Deitz said.
“The time away on training and
deployment can be tough for the soldiers
as well as loved ones so I really thank
family and friends for their support,” he
said.
Soldiers had the opportunity to mingle
with family and friends, media and
official guests at a barbecue after the
parade.
the CSSB while WO2 Leon Nelson, FSU 3, enjoys the
farewell parade with wife, Renee, and children, Blake, 7,
