Article by Shannon Boucher Photos by Shanon and Marie Zettler Pembroke Germania Oktoberfest, September 21 and 22, 2007 Another successful Oktoberfest has come to an end for the Pembroke Germania Club. The Germania Club hosted its annual Oktoberfest September 21 st and 22 nd with plenty of f ood, fun and entertainment throughout the weekend. The weekend of Gemuetlichkeit, laughter, singing, dancing and food all kicked off on Friday at 7:00pm with Mayor Ed Jackyno and Miss Oktoberfest 2007, Aranna Lubitz, tapping the keg. Club President, Marie Zettler, organizer Antaire Lubitz, Mayor Ed Jackyno and Miss Oktoberfest raised their glasses for the first “Ein Prosit” of the night to start the weekend of on the right note. Pembroke Mayor Ed Jackyno and Miss Oktoberfest 2007, Aranna Lubitz, tapping the keg This year, Matt Labar’s Alpine Ensemble from the Toronto area provided lively Bavairan music for the excited crowd both Friday and Saturday night. The band played many German favourites as well as sing-a-longs to get the crowd going. During the day on Germania Club President, Marie Zettler presenting flowers to Miss Oktoberfest 2007, Aranna Lubitz. Saturday, Terry Eggert’s band provided Ottawa Valley music with a German flavour in between the dances by the Schuhplattlers of Ottawa. One of the most entertaining parts of the weekend festivities is the performance put on by the Schuhplattlers. These Bavarian Folk Dancers always have amazing dances for everyone to watch – and watch out for – as they also incorporate large whips that are used to communicate in the Alps as part of their performance. Of Sägen! Willie Schmidt with Miss Oktoberfest 2007, Aranna Lubitz course the crowd also enjoyed the soothing sound of the Swiss Alp Horns and the talented ladies performing music with Swiss bells. This year, new to Pembroke’s Oktoberfest, was Bavarian fashions by Regina’s Dirndl. Many people who attended the Oktoberfest ended up leaving in some of her fashions. Many attendees appreciated being able to try on the clothing and purchase it right at the Club. On Saturday, some of the male Schuhplattlers escorted some ladies through the hall who modeled some of the dirndls for all to see. Of course Oktoberfest just isn’t right without food or beer. Schnitzel, bratwurst, sauerkraut, potato salad and pretzels were some of the things enjoyed by all throughout the weekend. The food was fresh, hot and delicious! The weekend went by in a flash as there were so many things to see and do. A parade through town, games, contests, souvenirs and dancers all kept guests entertained and in good spirits. Theresia and Erwin Beck in traditional Tracht 9 The Hofbräuhaus News November - December 2007 Oktoberfest parade (left to right) Addysen Medeiros, Shannon Boucher, Brainnah Keddy “It was a great Oktoberfest,” said Germania Club President Marie Zettler. “We had a number of people from Germany with us, either because they were visiting with local families, or because they were traveling in the area and saw our advertising and decided to check it out. The atmosphere was great, and the program moved along at a fast pace. People lined up for the log-sawing and other contests – no need to beg and plead for participants. We’re still getting great comments out in the community, and people are planning to come again next year.” This year’s Oktoberfest festivities were a success as told by the obvious enjoyment in the many smiling faces and positive comments throughout the weekend. Of course this weekend could not have went as smoothly without all of the volunteers putting in countless hours of time, their help is much appreciated. The Pembroke Germania Club looks forward to seeing everyone from near and far at next year’s festivities slated for October 17 th and 18 th , 2008.
