Although <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>re has been a c<strong>on</strong>tinued and expressed c<strong>on</strong>cern by <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> public, researchers and<br />

local authorities, little is known about <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> demography and behaviour <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> raven, o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r than<br />

recording its presence or absence. By documenting new observati<strong>on</strong>s taken over four m<strong>on</strong>ths<br />

incorporating <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> raven breeding seas<strong>on</strong> (August to November), I hereby described in detail <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

current distributi<strong>on</strong>, abundance and status <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Australian</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Raven</str<strong>on</strong>g> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Rottnest</strong> <strong>Island</strong>.<br />

3.2 Methods<br />

3.2.1 Field Observati<strong>on</strong>s<br />

<str<strong>on</strong>g>Raven</str<strong>on</strong>g> populati<strong>on</strong> sizes and territories were assessed by visually or audibly identifying <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

species, followed by pursuit and observati<strong>on</strong> using binoculars by a single observer. Six<br />

predefined sites (Figure 2.2b <str<strong>on</strong>g>Chapter</str<strong>on</strong>g> 2) and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> Thomps<strong>on</strong> Bay settlement were surveyed daily<br />

for <strong>on</strong>e hour per day over three days during each three m<strong>on</strong>thly survey period (September,<br />

October, November 2010) and a follow up survey in August 2011. At least <strong>on</strong>e morning, <strong>on</strong>e<br />

midday and <strong>on</strong>e afterno<strong>on</strong> visit were made to each site during each trip to avoid bias <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g><br />

observing <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same site at <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> same time. Opportunistic observati<strong>on</strong>s were noted between<br />

sites at o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r locati<strong>on</strong>s. Individual ravens were noted each time <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y entered <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> site<br />

(frequency), <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>ir behaviour (i.e. foraging, perched, flying overhead) and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> directi<strong>on</strong> that <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>y<br />

entered or departed a site. Notes were made <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r ravens audible in <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> area but not<br />

occurring <strong>on</strong> site. Interacti<strong>on</strong>s between ravens and o<str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g>r avian species were also noted,<br />

including predati<strong>on</strong> and any indicati<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> breeding (i.e. pair b<strong>on</strong>ding, nest building, mating).<br />

Locati<strong>on</strong>s <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> observati<strong>on</strong>s were marked using a GPS and <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> latitude and l<strong>on</strong>gitude recorded<br />

into a notebook. The data were imported into GIS s<str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g>tware Arcview 9.3 for Windows (ESRI<br />

Australia Pty. Ltd.) for mapping and analysis.<br />

3.2.2 Laboratory analysis<br />

The demography <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>the</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Australian</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>Raven</str<strong>on</strong>g> populati<strong>on</strong> <strong>on</strong> <strong>Rottnest</strong> <strong>Island</strong> was investigated by<br />

laboratory examinati<strong>on</strong> and dissecti<strong>on</strong> <str<strong>on</strong>g>of</str<strong>on</strong>g> specimens. Carcasses were obtained from authorised<br />

culling by <strong>Rottnest</strong> <strong>Island</strong> Authority Rangers in 2010 and 2011. <str<strong>on</strong>g>Raven</str<strong>on</strong>g>s were trapped from<br />
