Around the world of dairy
REGARDLESS of whether you’re
an Expo veteran or newbie, you
likely still haven’t experienced all
that it has to offer. To help you narrow
down the list of things to see
and do, we compiled a list of our Top
10 must-do’s.
1. Take a picture by the globe.
You can’t come to Around the
World of Dairy in Five Days without
visiting Expo’s trademark spinning
globe. It was unveiled in 1967
at the first show, and you’d never
guess what it is made of — two silo
caps welded together at the equator.
The spinning motion of the globe is
controlled by a 1972 Grand Torino
engine that only runs five days
each year. According to World Dairy
Expo staff, for the first few years of
the globe’s existence, it was actually
spinning the wrong way on its
axis. Luckily, a worker noticed the
backward motion which prompt ed a
repair. The globe now spins counterclockwise,
just as it should.
2. Eat a grilled cheese.
Don’t let the long line scare you
— these grilled cheese sandwiches
are part of Expo’s nostalgia. Prepared
by the fast hands of Badger
Dairy Club members, these sandwiches
are an affordable, easy-toeat
lunch. They come in Cheddar or
Swiss varieties. Other menu items
are flexible with World Dairy Expo’s
unpredictable weather: hot chocolate
and milk shakes.
The first record of grilled cheese
sales was at the 1976 World Dairy
Expo. Badger Dairy Club members
sold cheese sandwiches at the American
Dairy Association stand in the
Coliseum. This year will mark their
36th year in business.
3. Meet up.
Attendance in recent years has
averaged right around 65,000. That
means, based on the size of the
dairy industry, you’ll know a few
people there. World Dairy Expo is a
great opportunity to reconnect with
old friends and maybe meet some
new ones. Last year, nearly 3,000
foreign visitors came to the event
from countries around the globe.
You’d be surprised how many of
them know some English. Take the
time to make a global connection.
4. Reflect on our industry’s outstanding
people.
The champions of World Dairy
Expo are not only four-legged milk
producers — they are people, too.
Honorees recognized during the
week include youth judging contest
winners, Industry Person of the
Year, Woman of the Year, the recipient
of the Klussendorf trophy, and
that’s just the beginning. Events
like Dinner with the Stars and the
National Dairy Shrine Banquet held
on Tuesday and Wednesday nights,
respectively, are geared towards
recognizing the contributions of
these notable industry people.
5. Dine on local fare.
Of course, the grilled cheese stand
is close to the Coliseum, but the
grounds has some great food vendors
TAKING A PHOTO by the
Expo globe, which is only on
the grounds for one week
each year, is a must-do
whether you’re 1 or 101.
located on the far side of the outdoor
trade mall. Don’t forget dessert
either — we love the cream puffs and
the ice cream stand inside the Exhibition
Hall. The proceeds from each
cup of ice cream sold go to benefit
local FFA chapters.
Off grounds, Madison, Wis., is a
foodie’s paradise. Hundreds of restaurants
fill the streets of this capitol
city. The variety is remarkable,
too. Popular stops for Expo diners
include some of Madison’s top steak
houses. We like Prime Quarter, Tornado
Room, Smoky’s, Johnny Delmonico’s,
or Capitol Chophouse if it’s
red meat you’re craving.
places to get lunch or dinner.
6. Find some nightlife.
The Exhibition Hall may close at
5, and the cow show may wrap up
shortly after, but the day isn’t over.
Early evening hours are a good time
to walk the barns without the busy
traffic of early morning chores or
late night socializing. If it is networking
you are after, social hours
at area hotels are the place to be.
Later into the evening, many of
Expo’s visitors will even find themselves
dancing the evening away at
Expo social events or local hot spots.
7. Find your favorite cow — before
the show and in the barn.
The final placing of the judge in
the show ring is often what pays
at the end of the day. But, why not
WITH ALMOST 800 tradeshow
exhibitors, everyone
is sure to find something to
take home.
LAST YEAR’S NAMING of
Supreme Champion featured
beautiful bovines, costumes,
pageantry, and a horse.
pick out who your favorite is? Walking
barns gives you a glimpse of
cows (many times) topline-free and
relaxed in the straw. No paint, no
fluff. Plus, it is a great warm-up of
your judging skills.
8. Grab some freebies for the
folks at home.
Every year, the gimmicks get better
and more unique. Don’t pass
up a great freebie from one of the
show’s countless commercial exhibitors.
They make great gifts for the
people you left at home.
9. Engage, ask, and enjoy the
trade show.
A leisurely walk through the trade
show may seem meaningless to
some, but we en courage everyone to
take it a bit more seriously. Learn
what you can about new technologies,
and visit with companies you
already do business with. These
commercial exhibitors know that
World Dairy Expo is the place to
meet the best dairymen and women
in the world.
10. Watch Supreme Champion.
It is the last day of World Dairy
Expo, and, while you may be anxious
to get to your barn of cows at
home, don’t miss the naming of the
Supreme Champion. It is a production
with costumes, spotlights, and
entertainment. The Coliseum goes
dark for this one-hour special event.
Besides the naming of Supreme
Champion of the cow show, other
awards are presented to some of the
week’s most notable people.
