WINTER 2009
AND NOW A WORD
fROM OUR PRESIDENT...
It has been a truly gonzo year. 2008 saw a history-making national election,
surreal and sometimes mind-boggling corporate and investment news, a
hurricane in ohio, flying shoes in Iraq, and unfortunately troubling world
events that have become all too familiar.
In spite of all that, I have to say, things are pretty terrific here at CCad.
from a business perspective, enrollment is on target, our $12 million Creative
drive campaign is going well (we’re at $11.3 million in pledges!) as we come
down the final stretch, and from where I sit in my office I can literally see the
campus being transformed as our new 208-bed residence hall, design square
apartments, takes form.
our exhibition program is expanding into bold new areas with the Bureau
for open Culture, a program developed by our director of exhibitions Jim
Voorhies. the bureau is presenting art not only by traditional means, but by
community, print, and virtual means as well. Jim and his colleagues are recontextualizing
the dialogue. I love it.
student life is thriving as well. expanded student services, campus life
programs, and professional opportunities allow us to attract and retain a
very strong body of talented and motivated students, as well as helping us
build strong relationships within the community and business world. CCad
students now experience a real, full, and dynamic college experience.
the accomplishments of our alumni continue to reap regional and national
recognition, and our alumni community and the connections it fosters are
more robust than ever before. (hey alumni: are you a registered member of
the online community yet?)
on a more somber note, this fall marked the passing of a CCad icon. Joseph
V. Canzani, the college’s president from 1949 to 1995, died in Columbus
on august 8, a few days before his 93rd birthday. his fierce love for the
institution and his lifelong commitment to its success created a mighty legacy.
Clearly, CCad would not be what it is today had he not so tirelessly dedicated
himself to the development of the college and the success of its students. a
memorial service was held in his honor on october 8 in the auditorium of the
building that bears his name.
CCad continues to grow in strength, quality, reach, and reputation. you can
see it all over campus and in the impact our students, faculty, and alumni
make every day.
here’s to a better and stronger 2009.
warm regards,
four artists from the emmy-award winning
animated series The Simpsons helped celebrate
the launch of CCad’s new major in animation
this fall. presenting to a standing-room-only
crowd in the Canzani Center auditorium on
september 8, raymond persi, alex ruiz,
norm auble, and CCad alumnus shane sowell
(CCad ’01) talked about the process of creating
The Simpsons and discussed the highs and lows
of working in the animation industry. the artists
created simpsons drawings for the audience
after the talk.
the artists also visited classes and talked with
students about their animation portfolios.
sowell shared his experiences as a character
animator with a class of animation students
before the lecture. he emphasized the
importance of internships in helping animators
launch their professional careers. tom richner,
assistant professor of animation, organized the
event. richner worked for six seasons on The
Simpsons, and has many ties in the animation
industry.
the media studies division works closely
with professional partners at studios such as
film roman, disney, and dreamworks. “we
are fortunate to have connections with the
top animation studios in hollywood that
allow our students to work and study with
leading professional animators,” says CCad
SHIfT IN EXHIbITION PROGRAMMING
what is an exhibition? more pointedly, what
happens when art can not be contained—
physically or conceptually—within the walls of
a traditional gallery space?
Bureau for open Culture at Columbus College
of art & design responds to these questions.
the bureau is an exhibition-making philosophy.
It supports curatorial and artistic practices
that not only use the gallery as a site for
connecting with a viewer but rely on public
spaces and social contexts as the primary
means of engagement.
according to director of exhibitions James
Voorhies, the programming embraces
experimental and open approaches to
presenting work that is conceptually based,
emphasizing process over conclusion, and
may not always fit within traditional exhibition
platforms. at times this model may take the
form of off-site interventions, workshops,
screenings, informal talks, short-term
residencies, and online projects housed at
www.bureauforopenculture.org.
this past autumn Dewey Decimal Days put
some of these ideas into action. a five-day
series of free events, including informal talks
06
WINTER 2009
among librarians, Dewey Decimal Days also
included a web-satellite chat between an artist
and founding members of a printing press in
the netherlands; screenings of films selected
by librarians; video-recorded responses
to “why I love libraries”; and a conference
call between an artist and a curator of artist
books in Brooklyn. the project was a forum
for considering the effect libraries have on our
daily lives. documentation of these events is
available on the bureau’s website, as well as in
web-based components produced especially
for incorporating an online experience.
on one hand, the website is a gateway to
practical information—descriptions of past,
present, and future exhibitions; the mission;
news and publications; and links to other
organizations. on the other, it is a valuable
means for documenting projects, presenting
original video and sound works, uploading
interviews, offering free downloads of
publications, and more. the site becomes a
rich vehicle for ongoing engagements with
exhibitions.
the current exhibition, To Whom Do You
Beautifully Belong?, is a yearlong look at the
transformation of a barren plot of land into
a community garden. artists matthew flegle
and tongsue ly are spearheading the project.
It examines how urban space, collaboration,
and organic gardening coalesce to become
catalysts for community pride. one mile
from CCad’s campus, the plot of land can
be experienced in person, and is open to
everyone to participate. online visitors at any
distance can monitor it on the bureau’s site
and a link to a blog. the exhibition closes april
30, 2009.
not all exhibitions occur exclusively outside
the college’s Canzani Center gallery. In
february 2008, Exact Imagination was
presented inside and outside the institution’s
walls. the exhibition investigated various
factors that influence how viewers experience
art and included work—in the gallery—by
contemporary artists andrea fraser, louise
lawler, and Christian Jankowski, among
others. another participant, the portlandbased
collective red76, organized Franklin’s
VDC Copy Center in an empty downtown
storefront space. for two months during the
course of the exhibition, red76 created an
open-to-all site for conversations, workshops,
lectures, and dinners pertaining to a range of
topics about central ohio nonprofit agencies
and global cultural issues.
In addition to introducing pertinent topics about
contemporary life in a thematic exhibition format,
bringing artists to the CCad community is a key
component of the Bureau for open Culture. In
projects like Franklin’s VDC Copy Center, in-depth
interaction over a number of weeks between visiting
artists, students, and faculty stimulates lasting
relationships.
for CCad senior and fine arts major nicholas
hoffman, involvement with the bureau led to an
interest in alternative curatorial philosophies and
approaches that can be used in presenting art. “I
remember thinking what a breath of fresh air the first
exhibition put up through the bureau was,” he said.
“using social and cultural implications as the horizon
for the work instead of relying on the gallery/museum
is becoming an integral part of emerging art. It really
is a treat to have all this activity happening right here
in Columbus.”
CONNECTION
at the opening reception of the 2008 Faculty Biennial Exhibition on
october 2, a lively crowd of students and faculty filled the Canzani Center
gallery and atrium. the opening was an opportunity for students to see their
instructors’ professional work and to talk informally with them about it.
Julie abijanac (CCad ‘92), assistant professor in foundation studies, believes that
getting students to realize the faculty are not just teachers, but also art makers,
is an important benefit of the faculty biennial program at CCad.
“students see my art and express their thoughts about it,” says abijanac. “they
get a greater understanding that we are practicing what we are preaching—we
are walking the walk.”
the impact of the exhibition on faculty-student relations extends beyond
opening night. for sculptor and fine arts professor peter rasmussen, the
exhibition has a long-term benefit for both students and faculty. “the exhibition
opens up a dialogue with students,” he says. “I notice a difference with
students coming to talk to me more, and I get to know them better. Issues that
never would have come up are discussed.”
ENHANCED STUDENT SERVICES
TRANSfORM
THE CCAD
EXPERIENCE
08
life on the CCad campus just isn’t what
it used to be.
It’s better.
a new residence hall, professional
counseling services, expanded student
activities, and enhanced career services
are all evidence of a new culture that has
quietly evolved over the past several years.
recognizing that the classroom experience
is only one facet of student life, CCad
leadership is committed to fostering a more
supportive environment that addresses the
needs of the whole student.
“any alumni coming back now who hadn’t
seen the campus for four or five years
would be dumbstruck by the improvement
in the physical facilities alone—new
buildings, a quad that wasn’t here before,
and better lab facilities,” says dwayne
todd, associate vice president for student
affairs. “But equally important is the
change in atmosphere and the wealth of
services we offer. we have put our money
where our mouth is by soliciting feedback
from students and investing in staff and
programs that meet their needs.”
Residence Life
Improvement and expansion of on-campus
housing reflects not only a response to
student demand, but also to national
research demonstrating that students who
live on campus are more likely to succeed
academically and to have a positive view of
their college experience, todd notes. “we
were essentially a residential experience
for the majority of first-year students and a
commuter experience for everyone else,” he
says. “we are now in the process of building
a new residence hall that’s primarily targeted
to upper-level students.” (see accompanying
story at far right.)
In addition, the college has focused on
improving the residence program through
the selection and training of staff members.
“our resident assistants work to support their
residents and make their living experience
more enjoyable, as opposed to just being
simply policy enforcers,” todd says. “last year,
for example, we started the student success
Initiative. ras meet with each student four
times a year to help them formulate academic
goals and strategies, review progress, and
discuss any other needs the student might
have.”
Counseling Services
Counseling services, once provided by ohio
state university graduate students, are now
available from licensed professionals who are
supervised by a full-time psychologist. “our
counseling center staff sees students with a
broad range of needs,” todd says. “some
students come in once or twice because
they have low-level concerns in specific
areas of their lives. and others come in with
more in-depth needs that require multiple
sessions with a counselor.” In addition to the
counseling center, students with special needs
are also served by a recently hired director of
learning support and disability services. the
director works one on one with students with
disability needs and their faculty to ensure
appropriate accommodations are provided in
the classroom. she is also available to help all
students develop strategies to help them meet
their learning goals.
Career Services
a growing array of career services focus on
helping students gain work experience before
graduation, build their portfolios, and sharpen
their interviewing and job search skills. a
series of seminars were provided this past
fall semester in such areas as interviewing
skills, resume writing, and the internship
process. seminars this spring semester will
include topics such as job search skills and
evaluating an employment offer. “we’re trying
to increase the number of internships available
to our students, especially because three
more majors (fashion design, illustration and
graphic design) just instituted an internship
requirement,” todd says. (see related stories
on internships and business partnerships on
pages 10–11.) “although it’s very much in the
formative stages, we are also hoping to offer
students opportunities for a full-time, offcampus
co-op experience. this would involve
living and working off campus while doing
additional coursework.”
Student Activities
all work and no play makes for overstressed,
unhappy students. to combat academic
overload and mental fatigue, a student-run
programming board taps into CCad students’
interests and enthusiasm to organize activities.
student organizations and sports teams have
grown substantially in recent years. according
to todd, whose first hire was a student
activities director, the number of student
groups has grown from three to about 30.
lindsey ellibee, a junior majoring in interior
design, joined the student programming
board as a freshman and says it has more than
doubled in size since then. “we plan and run
activities like the Big Boo party for halloween,
drive-in movies in the quad, and a jazz night,
complete with massages and a chocolate
fountain,” she says. “these are especially
good for freshmen, because they get out of
their dorms and experience Columbus and the
campus, and get to know some of the older
students.”
ellibee cited the rigorous demands of the
curriculum as one reason students appreciate
a more supportive culture. “It seems as though
they’re trying to make the college more
student-friendly,” she says. “an example is
the ‘one-stop’ area in the Crane Center, where
you can get any question answered, whether
it involves academic advice, financial aid, your
bills, anything. It’s fast and easy, and they’re
really friendly.”
bUILD IT, AND
THEy WILL COME.
demand—and excitement—is running high for
a place in the design square apartments, the
new residence hall scheduled for completion this
summer. located at 91 Cleveland avenue, the
building will feature all private bedrooms in an
apartment-style arrangement with kitchens and
semi-private bathrooms. the building will also
house a dedicated fitness center, an expansive
lounge, and a new dining facility modeled on
a food court rather than a traditional cafeteria.
most of the 208 residents will be upper-level
students, though a limited number of rooms will
bUSINESS PARTNERSHIP
PROGRAM IS
WIN-WIN fOR
STUDENTS AND
bUSINESSES
from designing fashion swimwear to addressing
global conservation issues, CCad students
are tackling real-world design challenges
while competing for prize money and building
relationships with area businesses through the
Business partnership program.
“It’s a real plus if graduates can show a
prospective employer that they’ve worked
cooperatively with a real company or nonprofit
organization to design a marketable solution,”
says CCad senior development officer lucy
godman. “for businesses, the program gives
them access to creative talent with fresh ideas.”
the Business partnership program invites
businesses and nonprofits to bring a specific
business challenge to be solved as a class project
by upper level students. these clients commit
a minimum of $10,000 (less for nonprofits) to
sponsor the project; half the money is allocated
as prize money for the top three designs, while
the other half is given to departmental support.
10
only projects that are deemed relevant to the
class curriculum are accepted; the final decision
rests with the department dean.
two-way communication during the course
of the project helps ensure that students
understand all aspects of the task, and that
their solutions are on the right track. Before
the design process begins, students are usually
divided into teams to conduct market research
and analysis. they work independently to
create design solutions, which receive a final
critique by the client. In most cases the three
designs selected for monetary awards become
the intellectual property of the client and may
would you like to spend a summer working in manhattan?
two fashion design majors, erin sheehan and william Bende, seized the
opportunity to experience a career on fifth avenue when the express design
studio made two internships available exclusively to CCad students. erin has
continued to work at the firm’s Columbus studio while attending classes and
hopes to get a full-time job there after graduation.
“It’s quite common for a student to begin an internship junior year, hold it during
senior year, and get a job offer on graduation,” says tim Valentine, who joined
CCad as assistant director of career services in august. “that speaks to the
quality of our students. as soon as employers get their hands on one of our
with the number of internships on track to exceed last year’s total of 100,
“our internship program is really taking off,” says Valentine. “real-world work
experience is more critical than ever. so we’re expanding our outreach to
an internship, Valentine says his office is focused on increasing both the number
and the quality of opportunities.
“we’re trying to add more structure so that educational goals are met and
matched by job responsibilities,” he says. “for the employer, that means
providing meaningful opportunities that offer the student relevant experience
by simulating an actual job. we also encourage employers to assign the student
means setting clear learning goals before they begin the internship and sharing
their insights and experience with other students and with faculty.” during their
talent, hard work, and an historic presidential
the work of C.f. payne, CCad instructor and chair of Illustration, has been
featured in many u.s. magazines, from Reader’s Digest to Rolling Stone.
In fact, payne’s work has earned him a reputation as norman rockwell’s
successor. payne recently created the painting of Barack obama featured
on the cover of the January 26, 2009, special “Inauguration preview” issue
of Time magazine.
“It was a thrill and an honor to be called by Time magazine to do this historic
cover portrait,” he says. “and now that it’s on the newsstands, it is exciting
to know that people from all over the world, from kansas to new zealand,
will see it.”
the piece, originally commissioned for Time’s “person of the year” cover, is
a bit different from his distinctive illustrative style, which is often marked by
the exaggerated features of his subjects. the publisher wanted the work
to have a highly realistic style that harkened back to the magazine’s classic
portraiture.
payne’s work is featured in many u.s. magazines, including Time, Esquire,
Rolling Stone, Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times Book Review, Mad
Magazine, and Reader’s Digest. he exhibits widely, juries national shows,
and serves on boards for illustrators’ organizations. he illustrates children’s
books, including True Heart, written by marissa moss, and Micawber and
The Remarkable Farkle McBride, both written by John lithgow.
recently illustrated the children’s book Barack, by Jonah winter.
the book was #6 on the New York Times bestseller list for the week of november 23.
ford, who studied under C.f. payne at CCad, was accepted into the society of
Illustrators student competition in his junior and senior year. “at this point is where I
decided, ‘yeah, I can do this art thing for real,’” he recalls.
when he got out of college, he started doing freelance work for several publications,
such as Ohio Magazine and Boys’ Life, and building up his portfolio. after about eight
months he submitted his portfolio to publishers and visited them in new york. ford
didn’t get a chance to meet with harperCollins, but the publisher was impressed by his
portfolio and followed up with ford’s agent.
after the publisher hired him in late march, ford started working day and night to
complete the illustrations for the book. he cites his experience at CCad as good training
for this tremendous endeavor. “I had to work at night to help pay for school,” he
remembers. “I had to work a lot harder because I knew didn’t have the luxury of having
Chad hunt’s two trips to afghanistan—the first self-funded and the second on
MARSHALL TROy’S MAD SEASON
a CCad homework assignment from photo Illustration professor stephen webster
challenged his class to create a book cover for david sedaris’ Holidays on Ice that
considered all the elements in play—positions of objects, composition, titles—as
well as the author’s famous sense of humor. while listening to sedaris’ short stories
during class, marshall troy began to think of iconic holiday subjects that relate to
people—and then added his own twist. the illustration was chosen for the cover of
this year’s edition of this popular book.
“one of the first things that popped into my head was the Christmas figurine scene
that everyone’s grandparents usually have set up during the holiday. when I was
a kid, I used to look at these scenes and think how perfect everything looked. But
as I got older, I realized that holidays aren’t picture perfect. that’s when I felt that
observational comedy could work for this cover. from afar, the scene looks normal,
but once you look a little closer, you realize that something out of the ordinary is
actually happening. It gets you to stop and want to know more about the stories
inside.”
the fate of a voodoo doll that must make the
has earned widespread industry praise, including a
feature in leading trade magazine 3D World and a
nomination for an annie award, one of the highest
honors in the industry. Baldwin’s key challenge was
to make the film feel realistic in order to provide
emotional weight to the storytelling.
“I wanted ‘sebastian’s Voodoo’ to remain a dark
film, and to have the sacrifice theme be the
core. aside from keeping true to the story, I think
that maintaining a cinematic look was extremely
important. the camera is always motivated by the
action, the camera lens choices are motivated by
character and situations, and the lighting is always
from a motivated (realistic) source, using a lot of
depth of field effects and film grain. all of this make
the film feel tactile and realistic, and it’s what was
necessary to make the story have enough impact.”
danielle Julian-norton
Chris yates: most of your work is ephemeral
and made with unconventional building
materials. why is the use of such material
important?
Danielle Julian-Norton: In graduate
school…there was this moment like cymbals
crashing over my head. why should I limit
myself to traditional sculptural materials?
the viewer has a harder time connecting
to it. there’s something magical when the
viewer has a prior relationship with materials.
so, I started investigating the things I came
in contact with on a daily basis... exploring
what they mean to me and what they mean
universally.
Cy: But there’s something going on in the
way you handle the materials. It may be
something from our lives, but you transform
them in the way you allow light to pass
through them. so, what’s going on with that
transformation?
DJN: there is this magical moment of
materials... It’s this special moment where
people suddenly recognize what they’re
looking at and gasp, “oh, that’s rice.” that’s
the magic of the artwork... materials can take
on other meanings bigger than what they are.
they take on this ethereal and transcending
appearance and they become the poetry
of our life experience. It’s something very
beautiful, very temporary, and very nonpermanent.
so, all of it has a thread of
impermanence and fragility.
Cy: do you think that people get involved
with the poetry of the piece or do they just
think “how cool?”
DJN: It depends on how engaged they are
and what kind of experiences they bring with
them. I’ve seen it at reeves... where people
had a fascination with the material and
then they stopped to look closely. I watched
people talk to and question each other—
thinking about it beyond material fascination.
as they walk through, light and shadow
become really important. you see silhouettes
of figures passing by... so, as someone is
participating in the piece, the shadows talk
around ideas of existence.
Cy: so what about the boat form and the
rice: Is it a convenient shape or is it about
something else?
DJN: well the boat shape... I have been doing
for a long time... the ideas are of water, travel,
and movement. the travel is linked to our
life’s journey.
Cy: But because it’s a rice boat... Is it
dangerous?
DJN: It’s so fragile; it could break apart at
any moment. But yet... it exists in a body
of water... in flux constantly changing and
moving.
Cy: so is the boat a metaphor for people?
DJN: I think it’s a metaphor for our human
experience.
Cy: so is that fragility part of it?
DJN: yes! we’re all very temporary and this
human experience that we’re having is very
beautiful, but it’s also very nonpermanent. It’s
constantly changing and moving—taking us
from here to there.
Cy: what advice do you have for people
pursuing the same career path that you’re on?
DJN: Just brace yourself for rejection. things
will get in your way, but you just have to keep
going... I always thought that I could never do
it—it would never happen—but then I tried.
I wish I would have been more brave a long
time ago.
JERRy kWAN
(1934–2008),
CLASS Of ’76 The Rooftop Houses, 1984
Internationally renowned artist Jerry kwan
(CCad ’76) touched the lives of many artists
through his enthusiasm and passion for art.
his passing in may of 2008 inspired a group
of friends, former colleagues, and students
to organize a retrospective exhibition at the
hong kong arts Center in his memory. the
exhibition displayed a range of kwan’s works,
and demonstrated an artistic progression that
speaks to the exploration of new ideas and
learning that was a constant throughout the
artist’s career. the exhibition catalogue gave
insight into the life of this devoted artist and the
lives he touched.
Jerry kwan’s artistic pursuits permeated his
relationships with friends and students, which in
turn enhanced his professional career. originally
from hong kong, kwan was persuaded by a
friend to pursue his passion for art in the u.s.
his education and experiences during nearly
two decades in the u.s. influenced a large part
of his work. kwan’s work, created in a variety
18
of mediums, including printmaking, pencil
drawings, oil paintings, and sculptural forms
made from simple materials, is visually divergent
and represents the different phases in his life,
including his time at CCad, new york, and back
in hong kong.
At CCAD
during his time at CCad, kwan became part of
a core group of international students, including
several other artists who went on to achieve
international fame, such as ming fay and Bing
lee. the students shared the common bond
of having hong kong as their home. the
relationships kwan built at CCad influenced
the rest of his career, and his friends were able
to witness the progression of his artistic abilities
for more than thirty years. Bing lee remembers
kwan’s style at CCad as reminiscent of artists
he respected, such as mark rothko and
edward hopper.
In New york and Hong kong
after leaving CCad in 1976, kwan received an
mfa from the university of syracuse before
deciding to settle in new york City. many of his
CCad classmates also ventured to new york
while he was there. together, they struggled
to survive in the city, dealing with a lack of
income and stability. during this period, after
experimenting with a variety of different
mediums, kwan focused on oil painting.
this period was marked by brooding cityscapes,
which, according to ming fay, were reflective
kwan’s emotional state. fay describes his work
at this time as “not about the exterior of the city,
but more about the real emotions of a Chineseamerican
artist in his environment. his paintings
were authentic in showing and expressing a
solitary person walking along at night inside a
cold concrete urban jungle.” his work of this
period earned him a national endowment for
the arts fellowship in 1995.
In 1997, kwan returned to hong kong, where he
taught and became a mentor to many students. his
homecoming marked another change in his art. once
again he experimented with new materials—this time
integrating parts of Chinese folk tradition. kwan used
simple sculptural forms including paper cuts, wood, and
textile materials to re-create Chinese deities in a modern,
“pop art” style. this stylistic change made reference to
his homecoming while paying homage to his Chinese
heritage.
Bing lee remembers kwan this way: “I think Jerry has
always been young at heart to me, always wanting
to learn. I admired his courage—if he wanted to do
something, he found a way to do it.”
“at that point, we didn’t really know what our
agency was going to be, but we knew we
wanted to do interesting stuff. we had a great
meeting and won the business.”
a few years after teaming up with an advertising
conglomerate to give yahoo! the worldwide
Global brands influenced
by Steve Stone include:
back his interest in Black rocket and relaunched
the company as heat in 2004. the new agency
saw its business double in the first year, though
stone says growth has slowed somewhat as the
economy takes its toll on ad budgets.
to be competitive, agencies now have to
embrace and excel at reaching customers via
new media such as viral videos and microsites.
“this was kind of hard for me to accept, because
I love doing tV, print, and radio,” says stone.
“But online is huge. you have to figure it out, and
create one-on-one relationships with customers.”
one of the highlights of the heat website is a
viral video starring rocker tommy lee for client
handson mobile.
stone’s experience as a student at CCad
continues to help him to create ads that are
fresh and new. “at CCad the creative focus was
never diluted,” he says. “from library research to
actual design, all activities at CCad generated
creative rub-off. that’s the advantage of a
college focused on the creative spirit.”
the college. the exhibition, on view at the
hammond harkins galleries in Bexley, ohio,
brought together the work of diverse artists
from six states. ten percent of the exhibition’s
sales proceeds were given to the Creative
campaign to improve campus facilities and
bolster the college’s scholarship fund.
