fROM OUR P<strong>RE</strong>SIDENT...<br />

It has been a truly gonzo year. 2008 saw a history-making national election,<br />

surreal <strong>and</strong> sometimes mind-boggling corporate <strong>and</strong> investment news, a<br />

hurricane in ohio, flying shoes in Iraq, <strong>and</strong> unfortunately troubling world<br />

events that have become all too familiar.<br />

In spite <strong>of</strong> all that, I have to say, things are pretty terrific here at CCad.<br />

from a business perspective, enrollment is on target, our $12 million Creative<br />

drive campaign is going well (we’re at $11.3 million in pledges!) as we come<br />

down the final stretch, <strong>and</strong> from where I sit in my <strong>of</strong>fice I can literally see the<br />

campus being transformed as our new 208-bed residence hall, design square<br />

apartments, takes form.<br />

our exhibition program is exp<strong>and</strong>ing into bold new areas with the Bureau<br />

for open Culture, a program developed by our director <strong>of</strong> exhibitions Jim<br />

Voorhies. the bureau is presenting art not only by traditional means, but by<br />

community, print, <strong>and</strong> virtual means as well. Jim <strong>and</strong> his colleagues are recontextualizing<br />

the dialogue. I love it.<br />

student life is thriving as well. exp<strong>and</strong>ed student services, campus life<br />

programs, <strong>and</strong> pr<strong>of</strong>essional opportunities allow us to attract <strong>and</strong> retain a<br />

very strong body <strong>of</strong> talented <strong>and</strong> motivated students, as well as helping us<br />

build strong relationships within the community <strong>and</strong> business world. CCad<br />

students now experience a real, full, <strong>and</strong> dynamic college experience.<br />

the accomplishments <strong>of</strong> our alumni continue to reap regional <strong>and</strong> national<br />

recognition, <strong>and</strong> our alumni community <strong>and</strong> the connections it fosters are<br />

more robust than ever before. (hey alumni: are you a registered member <strong>of</strong><br />

the online community yet?)<br />

on a more somber note, this fall marked the passing <strong>of</strong> a CCad icon. Joseph<br />

V. Canzani, the college’s president from 1949 to 1995, died in <strong>Columbus</strong><br />

on august 8, a few days before his 93rd birthday. his fierce love for the<br />

institution <strong>and</strong> his lifelong commitment to its success created a mighty legacy.<br />

Clearly, CCad would not be what it is today had he not so tirelessly dedicated<br />

himself to the development <strong>of</strong> the college <strong>and</strong> the success <strong>of</strong> its students. a<br />

memorial service was held in his honor on october 8 in the auditorium <strong>of</strong> the<br />

building that bears his name.<br />

CCad continues to grow in strength, quality, reach, <strong>and</strong> reputation. you can<br />

see it all over campus <strong>and</strong> in the impact our students, faculty, <strong>and</strong> alumni<br />

make every day.<br />

here’s to a better <strong>and</strong> stronger 2009.<br />

Joseph V. Canzani, 1915–2008<br />

Joseph V. Canzani, artist, educator, <strong>and</strong> president <strong>of</strong> <strong>Columbus</strong><br />

<strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> art & design from 1949 to 1995, died in <strong>Columbus</strong><br />

on august 8, 2008. his influence on generations <strong>of</strong> artists <strong>and</strong><br />

designers was significant.<br />

a memorial gathering, which took place on october 6 in the<br />

Canzani Center auditorium, was a time for those who were<br />

close to Canzani to share stories about his colorful character<br />

<strong>and</strong> his influence. his son Vincent joined with faculty, staff, <strong>and</strong><br />

friends to pay homage to Canzani at the event. presentations<br />

featured video clips <strong>and</strong> even a rousing sing-along led by dean<br />

<strong>of</strong> Visual Communications richard aschenbr<strong>and</strong>.<br />

a web site created in his honor contains numerous video<br />

clips <strong>of</strong> Canzani, a full obituary, <strong>and</strong> a place for people<br />

to share their memories <strong>of</strong> this remarkable man.<br />

four artists from the emmy-award winning<br />

animated series The Simpsons helped celebrate<br />

the launch <strong>of</strong> CCad’s new major in animation<br />

this fall. presenting to a st<strong>and</strong>ing-room-only<br />

crowd in the Canzani Center auditorium on<br />

september 8, raymond persi, alex ruiz,<br />

norm auble, <strong>and</strong> CCad alumnus shane sowell<br />

(CCad ’01) talked about the process <strong>of</strong> creating<br />

The Simpsons <strong>and</strong> discussed the highs <strong>and</strong> lows<br />

<strong>of</strong> working in the animation industry. the artists<br />

created simpsons drawings for the audience<br />

after the talk.<br />

the artists also visited classes <strong>and</strong> talked with<br />

students about their animation portfolios.<br />

sowell shared his experiences as a character<br />

animator with a class <strong>of</strong> animation students<br />

before the lecture. he emphasized the<br />

importance <strong>of</strong> internships in helping animators<br />

launch their pr<strong>of</strong>essional careers. tom richner,<br />

assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor <strong>of</strong> animation, organized the<br />

event. richner worked for six seasons on The<br />

Simpsons, <strong>and</strong> has many ties in the animation<br />

industry.<br />

the media studies division works closely<br />

with pr<strong>of</strong>essional partners at studios such as<br />

film roman, disney, <strong>and</strong> dreamworks. “we<br />

are fortunate to have connections with the<br />

top animation studios in hollywood that<br />

allow our students to work <strong>and</strong> study with<br />

leading pr<strong>of</strong>essional animators,” says CCad<br />

president denny griffith. “the experiences<br />

that CCad animation students have make a<br />

huge difference when they are entering the<br />

workforce in this highly competitive field.”<br />

what is an exhibition? more pointedly, what<br />

happens when art can not be contained—<br />

physically or conceptually—within the walls <strong>of</strong><br />

a traditional gallery space?<br />

Bureau for open Culture at <strong>Columbus</strong> <strong>College</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> art & design responds to these questions.<br />

the bureau is an exhibition-making philosophy.<br />

It supports curatorial <strong>and</strong> artistic practices<br />

that not only use the gallery as a site for<br />

connecting with a viewer but rely on public<br />

spaces <strong>and</strong> social contexts as the primary<br />

means <strong>of</strong> engagement.<br />

according to director <strong>of</strong> exhibitions James<br />

Voorhies, the programming embraces<br />

experimental <strong>and</strong> open approaches to<br />

presenting work that is conceptually based,<br />

emphasizing process over conclusion, <strong>and</strong><br />

may not always fit within traditional exhibition<br />

platforms. at times this model may take the<br />

form <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>f-site interventions, workshops,<br />

screenings, informal talks, short-term<br />

residencies, <strong>and</strong> online projects housed at<br />

www.bureauforopenculture.org.<br />

this past autumn Dewey Decimal Days put<br />

some <strong>of</strong> these ideas into action. a five-day<br />

series <strong>of</strong> free events, including informal talks<br />

among librarians, Dewey Decimal Days also<br />

included a web-satellite chat between an artist<br />

<strong>and</strong> founding members <strong>of</strong> a printing press in<br />

the netherl<strong>and</strong>s; screenings <strong>of</strong> films selected<br />

by librarians; video-recorded responses<br />

to “why I love libraries”; <strong>and</strong> a conference<br />

call between an artist <strong>and</strong> a curator <strong>of</strong> artist<br />

books in Brooklyn. the project was a forum<br />

for considering the effect libraries have on our<br />

daily lives. documentation <strong>of</strong> these events is<br />

available on the bureau’s website, as well as in<br />

web-based components produced especially<br />

for incorporating an online experience.<br />

on one h<strong>and</strong>, the website is a gateway to<br />

practical information—descriptions <strong>of</strong> past,<br />

present, <strong>and</strong> future exhibitions; the mission;<br />

news <strong>and</strong> publications; <strong>and</strong> links to other<br />

organizations. on the other, it is a valuable<br />

means for documenting projects, presenting<br />

original video <strong>and</strong> sound works, uploading<br />

interviews, <strong>of</strong>fering free downloads <strong>of</strong><br />

publications, <strong>and</strong> more. the site becomes a<br />

rich vehicle for ongoing engagements with<br />

exhibitions.<br />

the current exhibition, To Whom Do You<br />

Beautifully Belong?, is a yearlong look at the<br />

transformation <strong>of</strong> a barren plot <strong>of</strong> l<strong>and</strong> into<br />

a community garden. artists matthew flegle<br />

<strong>and</strong> tongsue ly are spearheading the project.<br />

It examines how urban space, collaboration,<br />

<strong>and</strong> organic gardening coalesce to become<br />

catalysts for community pride. one mile<br />

from CCad’s campus, the plot <strong>of</strong> l<strong>and</strong> can<br />

be experienced in person, <strong>and</strong> is open to<br />

everyone to participate. online visitors at any<br />

distance can monitor it on the bureau’s site<br />

<strong>and</strong> a link to a blog. the exhibition closes april<br />

30, 2009.<br />

not all exhibitions occur exclusively outside<br />

the college’s Canzani Center gallery. In<br />

february 2008, Exact Imagination was<br />

presented inside <strong>and</strong> outside the institution’s<br />

walls. the exhibition investigated various<br />

factors that influence how viewers experience<br />

art <strong>and</strong> included work—in the gallery—by<br />

contemporary artists <strong>and</strong>rea fraser, louise<br />

lawler, <strong>and</strong> Christian Jankowski, among<br />

others. another participant, the portl<strong>and</strong>based<br />

collective red76, organized Franklin’s<br />

VDC Copy Center in an empty downtown<br />

storefront space. for two months during the<br />

course <strong>of</strong> the exhibition, red76 created an<br />

open-to-all site for conversations, workshops,<br />

lectures, <strong>and</strong> dinners pertaining to a range <strong>of</strong><br />

topics about central ohio nonpr<strong>of</strong>it agencies<br />

<strong>and</strong> global cultural issues.<br />

In addition to introducing pertinent topics about<br />

contemporary life in a thematic exhibition format,<br />

bringing artists to the CCad community is a key<br />

component <strong>of</strong> the Bureau for open Culture. In<br />

projects like Franklin’s VDC Copy Center, in-depth<br />

interaction over a number <strong>of</strong> weeks between visiting<br />

artists, students, <strong>and</strong> faculty stimulates lasting<br />

relationships.<br />

for CCad senior <strong>and</strong> fine arts major nicholas<br />

h<strong>of</strong>fman, involvement with the bureau led to an<br />

interest in alternative curatorial philosophies <strong>and</strong><br />

approaches that can be used in presenting art. “I<br />

remember thinking what a breath <strong>of</strong> fresh air the first<br />

exhibition put up through the bureau was,” he said.<br />

“using social <strong>and</strong> cultural implications as the horizon<br />

for the work instead <strong>of</strong> relying on the gallery/museum<br />

is becoming an integral part <strong>of</strong> emerging art. It really<br />

is a treat to have all this activity happening right here<br />

in <strong>Columbus</strong>.”<br />

CONNECTION<br />

at the opening reception <strong>of</strong> the 2008 Faculty Biennial Exhibition on<br />

october 2, a lively crowd <strong>of</strong> students <strong>and</strong> faculty filled the Canzani Center<br />

gallery <strong>and</strong> atrium. the opening was an opportunity for students to see their<br />

instructors’ pr<strong>of</strong>essional work <strong>and</strong> to talk informally with them about it.<br />

Julie abijanac (CCad ‘92), assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor in foundation studies, believes that<br />

getting students to realize the faculty are not just teachers, but also art makers,<br />

is an important benefit <strong>of</strong> the faculty biennial program at CCad.<br />

“students see my art <strong>and</strong> express their thoughts about it,” says abijanac. “they<br />

get a greater underst<strong>and</strong>ing that we are practicing what we are preaching—we<br />

are walking the walk.”<br />

the impact <strong>of</strong> the exhibition on faculty-student relations extends beyond<br />

opening night. for sculptor <strong>and</strong> fine arts pr<strong>of</strong>essor peter rasmussen, the<br />

exhibition has a long-term benefit for both students <strong>and</strong> faculty. “the exhibition<br />

opens up a dialogue with students,” he says. “I notice a difference with<br />

students coming to talk to me more, <strong>and</strong> I get to know them better. Issues that<br />

never would have come up are discussed.”<br />

The 2008 Faculty Biennial Exhibition, on view in the Canzani Center gallery from<br />

october 3 to december 6, 2008, showcased the work <strong>of</strong> 88 faculty members<br />

from all disciplines. the exhibition was presented with funds from the greater<br />

<strong>Columbus</strong> arts Council. the ohio arts Council helped fund this program with<br />

state tax dollars to encourage economic growth, educational excellence, <strong>and</strong><br />

life on the CCad campus just isn’t what<br />

it used to be.<br />

It’s better.<br />

a new residence hall, pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />

counseling services, exp<strong>and</strong>ed student<br />

activities, <strong>and</strong> enhanced career services<br />

are all evidence <strong>of</strong> a new culture that has<br />

quietly evolved over the past several years.<br />

recognizing that the classroom experience<br />

is only one facet <strong>of</strong> student life, CCad<br />

leadership is committed to fostering a more<br />

supportive environment that addresses the<br />

needs <strong>of</strong> the whole student.<br />

“any alumni coming back now who hadn’t<br />

seen the campus for four or five years<br />

would be dumbstruck by the improvement<br />

in the physical facilities alone—new<br />

buildings, a quad that wasn’t here before,<br />

<strong>and</strong> better lab facilities,” says dwayne<br />

todd, associate vice president for student<br />

affairs. “But equally important is the<br />

change in atmosphere <strong>and</strong> the wealth <strong>of</strong><br />

services we <strong>of</strong>fer. we have put our money<br />

where our mouth is by soliciting feedback<br />

from students <strong>and</strong> investing in staff <strong>and</strong><br />

programs that meet their needs.”<br />

Residence Life<br />

Improvement <strong>and</strong> expansion <strong>of</strong> on-campus<br />

housing reflects not only a response to<br />

student dem<strong>and</strong>, but also to national<br />

research demonstrating that students who<br />

live on campus are more likely to succeed<br />

academically <strong>and</strong> to have a positive view <strong>of</strong><br />

their college experience, todd notes. “we<br />

were essentially a residential experience<br />

for the majority <strong>of</strong> first-year students <strong>and</strong> a<br />

commuter experience for everyone else,” he<br />

says. “we are now in the process <strong>of</strong> building<br />

a new residence hall that’s primarily targeted<br />

to upper-level students.” (see accompanying<br />

story at far right.)<br />

In addition, the college has focused on<br />

improving the residence program through<br />

the selection <strong>and</strong> training <strong>of</strong> staff members.<br />

“our resident assistants work to support their<br />

residents <strong>and</strong> make their living experience<br />

more enjoyable, as opposed to just being<br />

simply policy enforcers,” todd says. “last year,<br />

for example, we started the student success<br />

Initiative. ras meet with each student four<br />

times a year to help them formulate academic<br />

goals <strong>and</strong> strategies, review progress, <strong>and</strong><br />

discuss any other needs the student might<br />

have.”<br />

Counseling Services<br />

Counseling services, once provided by ohio<br />

state university graduate students, are now<br />

available from licensed pr<strong>of</strong>essionals who are<br />

supervised by a full-time psychologist. “our<br />

counseling center staff sees students with a<br />

broad range <strong>of</strong> needs,” todd says. “some<br />

students come in once or twice because<br />

they have low-level concerns in specific<br />

areas <strong>of</strong> their lives. <strong>and</strong> others come in with<br />

more in-depth needs that require multiple<br />

sessions with a counselor.” In addition to the<br />

counseling center, students with special needs<br />

are also served by a recently hired director <strong>of</strong><br />

learning support <strong>and</strong> disability services. the<br />

director works one on one with students with<br />

disability needs <strong>and</strong> their faculty to ensure<br />

appropriate accommodations are provided in<br />

the classroom. she is also available to help all<br />

students develop strategies to help them meet<br />

their learning goals.<br />

Career Services<br />

a growing array <strong>of</strong> career services focus on<br />

helping students gain work experience before<br />

graduation, build their portfolios, <strong>and</strong> sharpen<br />

their interviewing <strong>and</strong> job search skills. a<br />

series <strong>of</strong> seminars were provided this past<br />

fall semester in such areas as interviewing<br />

skills, resume writing, <strong>and</strong> the internship<br />

process. seminars this spring semester will<br />

include topics such as job search skills <strong>and</strong><br />

evaluating an employment <strong>of</strong>fer. “we’re trying<br />

to increase the number <strong>of</strong> internships available<br />

to our students, especially because three<br />

more majors (fashion design, illustration <strong>and</strong><br />

graphic design) just instituted an internship<br />

requirement,” todd says. (see related stories<br />

on internships <strong>and</strong> business partnerships on<br />

pages 10–11.) “although it’s very much in the<br />

formative stages, we are also hoping to <strong>of</strong>fer<br />

students opportunities for a full-time, <strong>of</strong>fcampus<br />

co-op experience. this would involve<br />

living <strong>and</strong> working <strong>of</strong>f campus while doing<br />

additional coursework.”<br />

Student Activities<br />

all work <strong>and</strong> no play makes for overstressed,<br />

unhappy students. to combat academic<br />

overload <strong>and</strong> mental fatigue, a student-run<br />

programming board taps into CCad students’<br />

interests <strong>and</strong> enthusiasm to organize activities.<br />

student organizations <strong>and</strong> sports teams have<br />

grown substantially in recent years. according<br />

to todd, whose first hire was a student<br />

activities director, the number <strong>of</strong> student<br />

groups has grown from three to about 30.<br />

lindsey ellibee, a junior majoring in interior<br />

design, joined the student programming<br />

board as a freshman <strong>and</strong> says it has more than<br />

doubled in size since then. “we plan <strong>and</strong> run<br />

activities like the Big Boo party for halloween,<br />

drive-in movies in the quad, <strong>and</strong> a jazz night,<br />

good for freshmen, because they get out <strong>of</strong><br />

their dorms <strong>and</strong> experience <strong>Columbus</strong> <strong>and</strong> the<br />

campus, <strong>and</strong> get to know some <strong>of</strong> the older<br />

students.”<br />

ellibee cited the rigorous dem<strong>and</strong>s <strong>of</strong> the<br />

curriculum as one reason students appreciate<br />

a more supportive culture. “It seems as though<br />

they’re trying to make the college more<br />

student-friendly,” she says. “an example is<br />

the ‘one-stop’ area in the Crane Center, where<br />

you can get any question answered, whether<br />

it involves academic advice, financial aid, your<br />

bills, anything. It’s fast <strong>and</strong> easy, <strong>and</strong> they’re<br />

really friendly.”<br />

dem<strong>and</strong>—<strong>and</strong> excitement—is running high for<br />

a place in the design square apartments, the<br />

new residence hall scheduled for completion this<br />

summer. located at 91 Clevel<strong>and</strong> avenue, the<br />

building will feature all private bedrooms in an<br />

apartment-style arrangement with kitchens <strong>and</strong><br />

semi-private bathrooms. the building will also<br />

house a dedicated fitness center, an expansive<br />

lounge, <strong>and</strong> a new dining facility modeled on<br />

a food court rather than a traditional cafeteria.<br />

most <strong>of</strong> the 208 residents will be upper-level<br />

students, though a limited number <strong>of</strong> rooms will<br />

are tackling real-world design challenges<br />

while competing for prize money <strong>and</strong> building<br />

relationships with area businesses through the<br />

Business partnership program.<br />

“It’s a real plus if graduates can show a<br />

prospective employer that they’ve worked<br />

cooperatively with a real company or nonpr<strong>of</strong>it<br />

organization to design a marketable solution,”<br />

says CCad senior development <strong>of</strong>ficer lucy<br />

godman. “for businesses, the program gives<br />

them access to creative talent with fresh ideas.”<br />

the Business partnership program invites<br />

businesses <strong>and</strong> nonpr<strong>of</strong>its to bring a specific<br />

business challenge to be solved as a class project<br />

by upper level students. these clients commit<br />

a minimum <strong>of</strong> $10,000 (less for nonpr<strong>of</strong>its) to<br />

sponsor the project; half the money is allocated<br />

as prize money for the top three designs, while<br />

the other half is given to departmental support.<br />

only projects that are deemed relevant to the<br />

class curriculum are accepted; the final decision<br />

rests with the department dean.<br />

two-way communication during the course<br />

<strong>of</strong> the project helps ensure that students<br />

underst<strong>and</strong> all aspects <strong>of</strong> the task, <strong>and</strong> that<br />

their solutions are on the right track. Before<br />

the design process begins, students are usually<br />

divided into teams to conduct market research<br />

<strong>and</strong> analysis. they work independently to<br />

create design solutions, which receive a final<br />

critique by the client. In most cases the three<br />

designs selected for monetary awards become<br />

the intellectual property <strong>of</strong> the client <strong>and</strong> may<br />

be further developed <strong>and</strong> used at the client’s<br />

discretion.<br />

the list <strong>of</strong> past clients features prominent<br />

businesses <strong>and</strong> nonpr<strong>of</strong>it organizations<br />

throughout the midwest, including american<br />

greetings, Battelle memorial Institute, the<br />

<strong>Columbus</strong> Post, elmer’s products, hasbro,<br />

limited Br<strong>and</strong>s, ohio reads, <strong>and</strong> Victoria’s<br />

secret. “frequently, the people in the business<br />

community who submit proposals are CCad<br />

alumni, who are already familiar with the<br />

caliber <strong>of</strong> our students <strong>and</strong> their instructors,”<br />

says godman. “It’s one way they can remain<br />

involved with the school <strong>and</strong> help develop a<br />

new generation <strong>of</strong> design pr<strong>of</strong>essionals.”<br />

through the Business partnership program,<br />

CCad students have redesigned the masthead<br />

for a local newspaper; designed materials to<br />

support the launch <strong>of</strong> a new fragrance; <strong>and</strong>, in<br />

collaboration with Battelle research scientists,<br />

developed design solutions to address quality<strong>of</strong>-life<br />

<strong>and</strong> conservation issues in emerging<br />

countries.<br />

would you like to spend a summer working in manhattan?<br />

two fashion design majors, erin sheehan <strong>and</strong> william Bende, seized the<br />

opportunity to experience a career on fifth avenue when the express design<br />

studio made two internships available exclusively to CCad students. erin has<br />

continued to work at the firm’s <strong>Columbus</strong> studio while attending classes <strong>and</strong><br />

hopes to get a full-time job there after graduation.<br />

“It’s quite common for a student to begin an internship junior year, hold it during<br />

senior year, <strong>and</strong> get a job <strong>of</strong>fer on graduation,” says tim Valentine, who joined<br />

CCad as assistant director <strong>of</strong> career services in august. “that speaks to the<br />

quality <strong>of</strong> our students. as soon as employers get their h<strong>and</strong>s on one <strong>of</strong> our<br />

students, they don’t want to let go.”<br />

with the number <strong>of</strong> internships on track to exceed last year’s total <strong>of</strong> 100,<br />

“our internship program is really taking <strong>of</strong>f,” says Valentine. “real-world work<br />

experience is more critical than ever. so we’re exp<strong>and</strong>ing our outreach to<br />

employers <strong>and</strong> providing more resources to help students to find a suitable<br />

internship opportunity.” with five majors now requiring students to complete<br />

an internship, Valentine says his <strong>of</strong>fice is focused on increasing both the number<br />

<strong>and</strong> the quality <strong>of</strong> opportunities.<br />

“we’re trying to add more structure so that educational goals are met <strong>and</strong><br />

matched by job responsibilities,” he says. “for the employer, that means<br />

providing meaningful opportunities that <strong>of</strong>fer the student relevant experience<br />

by simulating an actual job. we also encourage employers to assign the student<br />

a mentor who can <strong>of</strong>fer instruction, advice, <strong>and</strong> guidance. for students, it<br />

means setting clear learning goals before they begin the internship <strong>and</strong> sharing<br />

their insights <strong>and</strong> experience with other students <strong>and</strong> with faculty.” during their<br />

internships, students are encouraged to blog about their experience. once the<br />

internship is completed, both student <strong>and</strong> employer must submit an evaluation<br />

in order for the student to receive academic credit.<br />

the work <strong>of</strong> C.f. payne, CCad instructor <strong>and</strong> chair <strong>of</strong> Illustration, has been<br />

featured in many u.s. magazines, from Reader’s Digest to Rolling Stone.<br />

In fact, payne’s work has earned him a reputation as norman rockwell’s<br />

successor. payne recently created the painting <strong>of</strong> Barack obama featured<br />

on the cover <strong>of</strong> the January 26, 2009, special “Inauguration preview” issue<br />

<strong>of</strong> Time magazine.<br />

“It was a thrill <strong>and</strong> an honor to be called by Time magazine to do this historic<br />

cover portrait,” he says. “<strong>and</strong> now that it’s on the newsst<strong>and</strong>s, it is exciting<br />

to know that people from all over the world, from kansas to new zeal<strong>and</strong>,<br />

will see it.”<br />

the piece, originally commissioned for Time’s “person <strong>of</strong> the year” cover, is<br />

a bit different from his distinctive illustrative style, which is <strong>of</strong>ten marked by<br />

the exaggerated features <strong>of</strong> his subjects. the publisher wanted the work<br />

to have a highly realistic style that harkened back to the magazine’s classic<br />

portraiture.<br />

payne’s work is featured in many u.s. magazines, including Time, Esquire,<br />

Rolling Stone, Atlantic Monthly, The New York Times Book Review, Mad<br />

two-<strong>and</strong>-a-half months <strong>of</strong> 14-hour days <strong>of</strong> hard work, a lot <strong>of</strong> preparation, <strong>and</strong> some<br />

incredible good timing paid <strong>of</strong>f for ag ford (CCad ‘07). the 23-year-old CCad alumnus<br />

recently illustrated the children’s book Barack, by Jonah winter.<br />

the book was #6 on the New York Times bestseller list for the week <strong>of</strong> november 23.<br />

ford, who studied under C.f. payne at CCad, was accepted into the society <strong>of</strong><br />

Illustrators student competition in his junior <strong>and</strong> senior year. “at this point is where I<br />

decided, ‘yeah, I can do this art thing for real,’” he recalls.<br />

when he got out <strong>of</strong> college, he started doing freelance work for several publications,<br />

such as Ohio Magazine <strong>and</strong> Boys’ Life, <strong>and</strong> building up his portfolio. after about eight<br />

months he submitted his portfolio to publishers <strong>and</strong> visited them in new york. ford<br />

didn’t get a chance to meet with harperCollins, but the publisher was impressed by his<br />

portfolio <strong>and</strong> followed up with ford’s agent.<br />

after the publisher hired him in late march, ford started working day <strong>and</strong> night to<br />

complete the illustrations for the book. he cites his experience at CCad as good training<br />

for this tremendous endeavor. “I had to work at night to help pay for school,” he<br />

remembers. “I had to work a lot harder because I knew didn’t have the luxury <strong>of</strong> having<br />

a lot <strong>of</strong> time to work on my assignments.”<br />

when CCad juniors emily Beros <strong>and</strong> zach<br />

Charbel received a call in november, asking<br />

if they’d like to design a document for the<br />

electoral college <strong>of</strong> ohio, they jumped at the<br />

chance to make history.<br />

the two worked for two weeks, “pretty<br />

much nonstop,” says Beros, to design the<br />

final document that ohio’s 20 electors signed<br />

as testimony to their selections for the u.s.<br />

president <strong>and</strong> vice president.<br />

Beros <strong>and</strong> Charbel started with the<br />

documents used in the last presidential<br />

election. they added ohio symbols to the six<br />

panels <strong>of</strong> the state’s “Certificate <strong>of</strong> Votes.”<br />

the watermark includes carnations, Buckeye<br />

leaves, <strong>and</strong> ladybugs.<br />

the results <strong>of</strong> their efforts were the focus <strong>of</strong><br />

the state’s attention on december 15, 2008,<br />

as members <strong>of</strong> the 52nd electoral <strong>College</strong><br />

<strong>of</strong> ohio made <strong>of</strong>ficial the state’s selection <strong>of</strong><br />

Barack obama <strong>and</strong> Joe Biden.<br />

operating base in afghanistan close to the border <strong>of</strong> pakistan.<br />

CHAD HUNT bA<strong>RE</strong>S HUMANITy<br />

Of SOLDIERS, WAR<br />

Chad hunt’s two trips to afghanistan—the first self-funded <strong>and</strong> the second on<br />

assignment for Men’s Journal magazine—yielded a deep portfolio <strong>of</strong> images, several<br />

gallery displays, <strong>and</strong> ultimately the cover <strong>of</strong> Time magazine. But according to hunt, the<br />

experience <strong>of</strong> afghanistan <strong>and</strong> the ensuing Time cover have affected him personally<br />

more than pr<strong>of</strong>essionally.<br />

hunt will return to afghanistan this spring.<br />

“when this issue <strong>of</strong> Time hit the st<strong>and</strong>s, I received an email from the mother <strong>of</strong> the<br />

soldier who was on the cover. he is currently in Iraq, but his mother took his children<br />

to the store to show them that their father was on Time magazine. his kids ran up <strong>and</strong><br />

down the aisle yelling, ‘daddy’s on the cover!’ I get at least one email a month from<br />

someone who came across my website <strong>and</strong> wants to thank me for helping to tell the<br />

stories <strong>of</strong> these soldiers. that means a lot to me <strong>and</strong> makes me want to do more.”<br />

a perfect holiday wonderl<strong>and</strong>—gone horribly wrong.<br />

MARSHALL TROy’S MAD SEASON<br />

a CCad homework assignment from photo Illustration pr<strong>of</strong>essor stephen webster<br />

challenged his class to create a book cover for david sedaris’ Holidays on Ice that<br />

considered all the elements in play—positions <strong>of</strong> objects, composition, titles—as<br />

well as the author’s famous sense <strong>of</strong> humor. while listening to sedaris’ short stories<br />

during class, marshall troy began to think <strong>of</strong> iconic holiday subjects that relate to<br />

people—<strong>and</strong> then added his own twist. the illustration was chosen for the cover <strong>of</strong><br />

this year’s edition <strong>of</strong> this popular book.<br />

“one <strong>of</strong> the first things that popped into my head was the Christmas figurine scene<br />

that everyone’s gr<strong>and</strong>parents usually have set up during the holiday. when I was<br />

a kid, I used to look at these scenes <strong>and</strong> think how perfect everything looked. But<br />

as I got older, I realized that holidays aren’t picture perfect. that’s when I felt that<br />

observational comedy could work for this cover. from afar, the scene looks normal,<br />

but once you look a little closer, you realize that something out <strong>of</strong> the ordinary is<br />

actually happening. It gets you to stop <strong>and</strong> want to know more about the stories<br />

inside.”<br />

JOAqUIN bALDWIN’S<br />

PIN-UP DOLLS<br />

tension, hope, <strong>and</strong> horror unfold in Joaquin<br />

Baldwin’s grim <strong>and</strong> visually arresting “sebastian’s<br />

Voodoo,” a short animation film that follows<br />

the fate <strong>of</strong> a voodoo doll that must make the<br />

ultimate sacrifice to save his friends from being<br />

pinned to death. the piece, a youtube favorite,<br />

has earned widespread industry praise, including a<br />

feature in leading trade magazine 3D World <strong>and</strong> a<br />

nomination for an annie award, one <strong>of</strong> the highest<br />

honors in the industry. Baldwin’s key challenge was<br />

to make the film feel realistic in order to provide<br />

emotional weight to the storytelling.<br />

“I wanted ‘sebastian’s Voodoo’ to remain a dark<br />

film, <strong>and</strong> to have the sacrifice theme be the<br />

core. aside from keeping true to the story, I think<br />

that maintaining a cinematic look was extremely<br />

important. the camera is always motivated by the<br />

action, the camera lens choices are motivated by<br />

character <strong>and</strong> situations, <strong>and</strong> the lighting is always<br />

from a motivated (realistic) source, using a lot <strong>of</strong><br />

depth <strong>of</strong> field effects <strong>and</strong> film grain. all <strong>of</strong> this make<br />

the film feel tactile <strong>and</strong> realistic, <strong>and</strong> it’s what was<br />

necessary to make the story have enough impact.”<br />

danielle Julian-norton (CCad ’99) is rapidly<br />

making her mark on the art world. she recently<br />

had a successful solo exhibition in new york<br />

City at the reeves Contemporary gallery, which<br />

is known for cutting edge artwork, especially<br />

installation sculpture. Julian-norton earned<br />

her mfa in 2002 from the university <strong>of</strong> notre<br />

dame; for the last four years, she has been a<br />

foundation/fine arts Instructor at CCad.<br />

she has received numerous honors, including<br />

the ohio arts Council Individual Creativity<br />

grant, a prestigious residency at the headl<strong>and</strong>s<br />

Center for the arts in san francisco, <strong>and</strong> a<br />

commission piece for the mtV music awards.<br />

she has established a national exhibition record<br />

with shows at the Butler Institute <strong>of</strong> american<br />

art, spaces gallery in Clevel<strong>and</strong>, <strong>and</strong> the snite<br />

museum <strong>of</strong> art. Danielle Julian-Norton: In<br />

Christopher yates (CCad ‘87), assistant<br />

pr<strong>of</strong>essor in foundation studies <strong>and</strong> freelance<br />

art critic for The <strong>Columbus</strong> Dispatch, recently<br />

sat down with her to discuss her new york<br />

exhibit, artwork, <strong>and</strong> plans for the future.<br />

Ambrosia, 2008<br />

danielle Julian-norton<br />

Chris yates: most <strong>of</strong> your work is ephemeral<br />

<strong>and</strong> made with unconventional building<br />

materials. why is the use <strong>of</strong> such material<br />

important?<br />

Danielle Julian-Norton: In graduate<br />

school…there was this moment like cymbals<br />

crashing over my head. why should I limit<br />

myself to traditional sculptural materials?<br />

the viewer has a harder time connecting<br />

to it. there’s something magical when the<br />

viewer has a prior relationship with materials.<br />

so, I started investigating the things I came<br />

in contact with on a daily basis... exploring<br />

what they mean to me <strong>and</strong> what they mean<br />

universally.<br />

Cy: But there’s something going on in the<br />

way you h<strong>and</strong>le the materials. It may be<br />

something from our lives, but you transform<br />

them in the way you allow light to pass<br />

through them. so, what’s going on with that<br />

transformation?<br />

DJN: there is this magical moment <strong>of</strong><br />

materials... It’s this special moment where<br />

people suddenly recognize what they’re<br />

looking at <strong>and</strong> gasp, “oh, that’s rice.” that’s<br />

the magic <strong>of</strong> the artwork... materials can take<br />

on other meanings bigger than what they are.<br />

they take on this ethereal <strong>and</strong> transcending<br />

appearance <strong>and</strong> they become the poetry<br />

<strong>of</strong> our life experience. It’s something very<br />

beautiful, very temporary, <strong>and</strong> very nonpermanent.<br />

so, all <strong>of</strong> it has a thread <strong>of</strong><br />

impermanence <strong>and</strong> fragility.<br />

Cy: do you think that people get involved<br />

with the poetry <strong>of</strong> the piece or do they just<br />

think “how cool?”<br />

DJN: It depends on how engaged they are<br />

<strong>and</strong> what kind <strong>of</strong> experiences they bring with<br />

them. I’ve seen it at reeves... where people<br />

had a fascination with the material <strong>and</strong><br />

then they stopped to look closely. I watched<br />

people talk to <strong>and</strong> question each other—<br />

thinking about it beyond material fascination.<br />

as they walk through, light <strong>and</strong> shadow<br />

become really important. you see silhouettes<br />

<strong>of</strong> figures passing by... so, as someone is<br />

participating in the piece, the shadows talk<br />

around ideas <strong>of</strong> existence.<br />

Cy: so what about the boat form <strong>and</strong> the<br />

rice: Is it a convenient shape or is it about<br />

something else?<br />

DJN: well the boat shape... I have been doing<br />

for a long time... the ideas are <strong>of</strong> water, travel,<br />

<strong>and</strong> movement. the travel is linked to our<br />

life’s journey.<br />

Cy: But because it’s a rice boat... Is it<br />

dangerous?<br />

DJN: It’s so fragile; it could break apart at<br />

any moment. But yet... it exists in a body<br />

<strong>of</strong> water... in flux constantly changing <strong>and</strong><br />

moving.<br />

Cy: so is the boat a metaphor for people?<br />

DJN: I think it’s a metaphor for our human<br />

experience.<br />

Cy: so is that fragility part <strong>of</strong> it?<br />

DJN: yes! we’re all very temporary <strong>and</strong> this<br />

human experience that we’re having is very<br />

beautiful, but it’s also very nonpermanent. It’s<br />

constantly changing <strong>and</strong> moving—taking us<br />

from here to there.<br />

Cy: what advice do you have for people<br />

pursuing the same career path that you’re on?<br />

DJN: Just brace yourself for rejection. things<br />

will get in your way, but you just have to keep<br />

going... I always thought that I could never do<br />

it—it would never happen—but then I tried.<br />

I wish I would have been more brave a long<br />

through his enthusiasm <strong>and</strong> passion for art.<br />

his passing in may <strong>of</strong> 2008 inspired a group<br />

<strong>of</strong> friends, former colleagues, <strong>and</strong> students<br />

to organize a retrospective exhibition at the<br />

hong kong arts Center in his memory. the<br />

exhibition displayed a range <strong>of</strong> kwan’s works,<br />

<strong>and</strong> demonstrated an artistic progression that<br />

speaks to the exploration <strong>of</strong> new ideas <strong>and</strong><br />

learning that was a constant throughout the<br />

artist’s career. the exhibition catalogue gave<br />

insight into the life <strong>of</strong> this devoted artist <strong>and</strong> the<br />

lives he touched.<br />

Jerry kwan’s artistic pursuits permeated his<br />

relationships with friends <strong>and</strong> students, which in<br />

turn enhanced his pr<strong>of</strong>essional career. originally<br />

from hong kong, kwan was persuaded by a<br />

friend to pursue his passion for art in the u.s.<br />

his education <strong>and</strong> experiences during nearly<br />

two decades in the u.s. influenced a large part<br />

<strong>of</strong> his work. kwan’s work, created in a variety<br />

<strong>of</strong> mediums, including printmaking, pencil<br />

drawings, oil paintings, <strong>and</strong> sculptural forms<br />

made from simple materials, is visually divergent<br />

<strong>and</strong> represents the different phases in his life,<br />

including his time at CCad, new york, <strong>and</strong> back<br />

in hong kong.<br />

At CCAD<br />

during his time at CCad, kwan became part <strong>of</strong><br />

a core group <strong>of</strong> international students, including<br />

several other artists who went on to achieve<br />

international fame, such as ming fay <strong>and</strong> Bing<br />

lee. the students shared the common bond<br />

<strong>of</strong> having hong kong as their home. the<br />

relationships kwan built at CCad influenced<br />

the rest <strong>of</strong> his career, <strong>and</strong> his friends were able<br />

to witness the progression <strong>of</strong> his artistic abilities<br />

for more than thirty years. Bing lee remembers<br />

kwan’s style at CCad as reminiscent <strong>of</strong> artists<br />

he respected, such as mark rothko <strong>and</strong><br />

edward hopper.<br />

In New york <strong>and</strong> Hong kong<br />

after leaving CCad in 1976, kwan received an<br />

mfa from the university <strong>of</strong> syracuse before<br />

deciding to settle in new york City. many <strong>of</strong> his<br />

CCad classmates also ventured to new york<br />

while he was there. together, they struggled<br />

to survive in the city, dealing with a lack <strong>of</strong><br />

income <strong>and</strong> stability. during this period, after<br />

experimenting with a variety <strong>of</strong> different<br />

mediums, kwan focused on oil painting.<br />

this period was marked by brooding cityscapes,<br />

which, according to ming fay, were reflective<br />

kwan’s emotional state. fay describes his work<br />

at this time as “not about the exterior <strong>of</strong> the city,<br />

but more about the real emotions <strong>of</strong> a Chineseamerican<br />

artist in his environment. his paintings<br />

were authentic in showing <strong>and</strong> expressing a<br />

solitary person walking along at night inside a<br />

cold concrete urban jungle.” his work <strong>of</strong> this<br />

period earned him a national endowment for<br />

the arts fellowship in 1995.<br />

In 1997, kwan returned to hong kong, where he<br />

taught <strong>and</strong> became a mentor to many students. his<br />

homecoming marked another change in his art. once<br />

again he experimented with new materials—this time<br />

integrating parts <strong>of</strong> Chinese folk tradition. kwan used<br />

simple sculptural forms including paper cuts, wood, <strong>and</strong><br />

textile materials to re-create Chinese deities in a modern,<br />

“pop art” style. this stylistic change made reference to<br />

his homecoming while paying homage to his Chinese<br />

heritage.<br />

Bing lee remembers kwan this way: “I think Jerry has<br />

always been young at heart to me, always wanting<br />

to learn. I admired his courage—if he wanted to do<br />

something, he found a way to do it.”<br />

CLASS Of ’83<br />

Creating the “yahoo! yodel” is just one <strong>of</strong> the<br />

creative peaks in the 25-year career <strong>of</strong> steve<br />

stone (CCad ’83), chairman <strong>and</strong> creative<br />

director <strong>of</strong> heat, a san francisco-based<br />

advertising agency.<br />

heat is a small agency with big clients: electronic<br />

arts, Cinemax, pepsiCo, adobe, disneyl<strong>and</strong><br />

resort, <strong>and</strong> Condé nast media group, whose<br />

magazine titles include The New Yorker, Vogue,<br />

Vanity Fair, Wired, Lucky <strong>and</strong> GQ. encompassing<br />

tV <strong>and</strong> radio spots, print ads, outdoor <strong>and</strong><br />

Internet-based media, heat’s creative work is<br />

quirky, imaginative, <strong>and</strong> <strong>of</strong>ten funny.<br />

“we want to be seen as a company <strong>of</strong> ideas,”<br />

says stone. when hiring, “we look for people<br />

who are explorers, who aren’t afraid to<br />

take a chance, <strong>and</strong> who have passions other<br />

than ads <strong>and</strong> awards. artists, authors, even<br />

jugglers sometimes make better advertising<br />

creative people than those whose whole life is<br />

advertising.”<br />

though he now values the small agency<br />

environment that affords him h<strong>and</strong>s-on creative<br />

involvement with each client, stone launched his<br />

career at a big agency, the san francisco <strong>of</strong>fice<br />

<strong>of</strong> ketchum advertising. he l<strong>and</strong>ed the job<br />

right out <strong>of</strong> CCad, where he says a copywriting<br />

course in his junior year helped him develop his<br />

conceptual skills.<br />

“advertising was really different back then,<br />

all about tV, print, <strong>and</strong> outdoor,” he says.<br />

“obviously, there was no online, no nontraditional,<br />

guerrilla stuff. tV was king.”<br />

after 13 years at various agencies, stone <strong>and</strong><br />

three friends launched their own agency, Black<br />

rocket, in 1996. a young marketing executive<br />

for yahoo!, a recent startup itself, saw a brief<br />

newspaper story about the fledgling company<br />

<strong>and</strong> invited stone to pitch their business. “we<br />

said, ‘sure, but what’s yahoo!?’” stone laughs.<br />

“at that point, we didn’t really know what our<br />

agency was going to be, but we knew we<br />

wanted to do interesting stuff. we had a great<br />

meeting <strong>and</strong> won the business.”<br />

a few years after teaming up with an advertising<br />

conglomerate to give yahoo! the worldwide<br />

network it eventually required, stone bought<br />

back his interest in Black rocket <strong>and</strong> relaunched<br />

the company as heat in 2004. the new agency<br />

saw its business double in the first year, though<br />

stone says growth has slowed somewhat as the<br />

economy takes its toll on ad budgets.<br />

to be competitive, agencies now have to<br />

embrace <strong>and</strong> excel at reaching customers via<br />

new media such as viral videos <strong>and</strong> microsites.<br />

“this was kind <strong>of</strong> hard for me to accept, because<br />

I love doing tV, print, <strong>and</strong> radio,” says stone.<br />

“But online is huge. you have to figure it out, <strong>and</strong><br />

create one-on-one relationships with customers.”<br />

viral video starring rocker tommy lee for client<br />

h<strong>and</strong>son mobile.<br />

stone’s experience as a student at CCad<br />

continues to help him to create ads that are<br />

fresh <strong>and</strong> new. “at CCad the creative focus was<br />

never diluted,” he says. “from library research to<br />

actual design, all activities at CCad generated<br />

creative rub-<strong>of</strong>f. that’s the advantage <strong>of</strong> a<br />

college focused on the creative spirit.”<br />

this past fall 49 CCad-affiliated artists<br />

from across the country took part in a local<br />

exhibition that celebrated CCad’s impact<br />

on the arts community <strong>and</strong> raised funds for<br />

the college. the exhibition, on view at the<br />

hammond harkins galleries in Bexley, ohio,<br />

brought together the work <strong>of</strong> diverse artists<br />

from six states. ten percent <strong>of</strong> the exhibition’s<br />

sales proceeds were given to the Creative<br />

drive, CCad’s $12 million comprehensive<br />

campaign to improve campus facilities <strong>and</strong><br />
