Cathedral and meeting point
for all Cathedral and Treasury
the media-aided representation
of the Aachen Cathedral as
house of God and church of the
Bishop of Aachen. Furthermore
art works among others from
the Cathedral Treasury are presented,
which are a good reason
At the beginning of the 14th
century the Aachen citizenship
took over the derelict
palace of Charlemagne and on
its foundation walls built the
Gothic town hall. Today copies
of a Carolingian hand-written
paper true to the original, the
sword, the imperial crown and
the imperial orb of Charlemagne
remind of 30 coronations, which
took place in Aachen between
936 and 1531. The richly decorated
rooms in the ground floor
witness the glory of the imperial
city in the 17th and 18th
century, when the town hall was
converted into a Baroque city
palace.
The largest historical paintings
from the Romantic school show
legendary and historical scenes
from the life of Charlemagne.
Interactive exhibition objects
present historical facts in an
entertaining way. By means of
an audio-visual guide you will
experience how a coronation
feast in the 16th century might
have taken place.
