fter the serious crisis that hit the world’s
economy recently, last year, the Fluid Power
industry in Italy managed to recovery
what it had lost in terms of turnover and
market shares. If forecasts are to be believed,
this year should be up by 20-25%
on last year. Speaking to Progettare was Giorgio Beretta, the
President of Assofluid, the Italian Association of Manufacturing
and Trading Companies in Fluid Power Equipment
and Components. Together we analysed all the main problems
that the industry has to deal with: from a return to investments
to the increase in the costs of raw materials, from
competition from emerging countries to the difficulties in
getting credit, as well matters regarding corporate aggregations.
President, according to the figures that you released recently
pertaining to Italian companies, 2010 growth levels
were up on the previous year. Could you be a bit more specific?
“The Fluid Power industry in Italy managed to recovery what it
had lost in terms of turnover throughout 2010: this result was
rather predictable given the growth rates witnessed in the first
few months of last year, also in consideration of the serious crisis
that hit our industry in 2009. Generally speaking, we can confirm
that domestic production levels went up more than domestic
consumption levels and that the growth rate in 2010 already
made up for some of the losses incurred in 2009. In short, the oil
hydraulics industry was up by 43% in terms of production
(reaching the 1.8 billion Euro mark) and by 23% in domestic
deliveries (worth around 1 billion Euros), whereas the pneumat-

ics industry went up by 51% with regard to production and
40% in terms of the domestic market (both areas are worth more
than 500 million Euros each)”.
What is on the cards for 2011?
“We all hope that 2011 will grow at such a rate that makes it
possible to recovery the level of turnover that was dilapidated
during the world’s crisis in 2009. To be able to do so, our industry
should see a further increase of 20-25% throughout the year
compared to 2010 and that’s what everyone is pinning their
hopes on”.
Do you think that many Italian companies will be in a position
to start reinvesting again?
“I feel that companies will still maintain a ‘prudent’ profile over
the next few months in terms of investments, so as to be able to
evaluate both the trend during the first few months of the year
and any possible developments on the market. However, to be
constantly competitive on an international level, it is now indispensable
to reason and work from the point of view of on-going
investments, not just in machinery and systems, but also in research
and development, staff training and business actions, and
companies are well aware of this”.
Could the increase in the cost of raw materials, plus a further
possible hike, have a knock-on effect on the selling
price of components?
“Even though the cost of raw materials went up during 2010 by
well over 15%, our companies currently predict further increases
in selling prices that are actually lower than those regarding production
materials. Obviously, over the next few months the raw
materials market will have to be monitored very closely, as it has
recently become extremely unpredictable, especially for certain
types of material”.
What is the recipe, if one actually exists, for companies in
our country for competing on the market with the socalled
emerging countries?
“Undoubtedly technological investment, the ability to penetrate
foreign markets and staff training. As I said before, these days it
is not possible to be competitive in the long term without investing
in research and development, aimed at coming up with new
application packages and solutions that reliable, high performance,
energy-saving and long-lasting. Not investing in these parameters,
means that companies will find themselves having to
succumb to economies that are becoming more and more aggressive,
but which still do not have the same level of quality as Italian
products. This necessarily implies having both adequate investment
funds and a highly trained workforce available, so as to
be able to tackle future challenges. I don’t think this will be possible
without having the right professional training for staff at all
levels. So, the training aspect also has to be looked upon as a fundamental
strategic variable. High level innovation in all industries
will also come from the need to adapt to legislative provisions
linked to saving energy, which all industrial sectors will
have to comply with in years to come, with consequent studies
and applications that will also lead to new ideas within fluid
power circles. In fact, the so-called Green Economy is now becoming
more and more widespread, characterised by particular
attention being paid to the impact on the environment. I think
that, in Italy, more emphasis should be put on this issue, as it
would undoubtedly lead to a greater commercial value of the
products”.
The crisis brought with it a number of transformations, in
the customer approach, for example, and in the way that
companies are organised. How has this crisis changed the
market?
“Undoubtedly, the prolonged crisis period that we have had to
endure has had an effect on corporate relationships, both externally
(that is to say suppliers and customers) and in-house (organisation
and personnel). In fact, now more than ever before,
having loyal customers/suppliers and trust among the counterparts,
is an indispensable guarantee if a company is to survive.
The crisis was hard-hitting, but if you want to ‘see’ your glass
half-full instead of half-empty, a re-evaluation of ones own organisational
criteria is also inevitable with a selection of the best
customers/suppliers, and this can be a positively reckonable aspect
in the long term”.
One of the problems that still remains today is the fact
that companies find it difficult to get access to credit. How
can companies overcome this stumbling block and how
much does it effect the day-to-day running of a business?
“At present, in order to be able to face what is a big problem for
companies, an agreement was recently signed by Confindustria,
the Ministry of Economy and Finance, ABI (Italian Banking
Association) and the trade associations, to help companies get access
to credit. In particular, this agreement gives companies,
which had not already taken advantage of the previous moratori-

um, the possibility to ask for payments to be suspended, by extending
the ‘Joint Agreement’ to July 31 st 2011. However, for
those companies that already took advantage of the Agreement
and started to pay off their debts, there is the possibility to extend
the amount of time remaining on the loans by up to three
years, so taking the pressure off the payback plan. It also needs
pointing out that the banks, under this agreement, have taken
on the responsibility to grant companies, that have increased
their capital, loans that are equal to a multiple of the actual increase
in said capital. I believe that these types of agreement are
extremely positive, as they lay down the conditions that are
needed for economic recovery and they highlight a closer and
more trusting relationship between the banks and small/medium-sized
companies”.
The average size of Italian companies is much smaller
than those of many of their foreign competitors. How do
companies feel about joining forces and what initiatives
are underway in this respect?
“On the understanding that the dimensional factor (or rather
the size of a company) is not always synonymous with efficiency
and quality, there is still no doubt that Italian companies could
be more successful on an international level if they were to join
forces, as this is becoming increasingly more necessary if they
want to be able to compete on foreign markets. With this in
mind, Confindustria is pursuing the so-called ‘Business Networks’
Project, sustained by a national law (n. 122/2010 that
states urgent measures with regards to financial stabilisation
and economic competitiveness). It backs forms of aggregation
between companies, aimed precisely at tackling better the challenges
that crop up on the global market, even though it is not
always easy to fully understand this aspect. This does not take
away the fact that Italian firms are still an icon of quality, reliability
and safety in various industries, Fluid Power included,
and I would like to say that, despite the average size being smaller
than foreign competitors, they are well-rooted and consolidated
on the world’s markets”.
What role does an association like Assofluid have to play
when it comes to supporting companies?
“Some time ago, Assofluid set up a project aimed at increasing
the number of industry-based trade fairs that it attended
around the world, so as to further promote Italian produce
abroad: Assofluid considerably stepped up its presence in those
countries that are considered to be the most interesting from
both a commercial and economical development point of view.
Over the last few years, the association has attended trade-fairs
in China, Germany, India, Russia, America and Turkey. Attendance
is based on the organisation of associative groups (set up
during Hannover Messe and IFPE in Las Vegas) or in collaboration
with ICE and Promos, so as to further enhance Italy’s
presence in the events.
Then there are a number of initiatives and services, of benefit to
members, that support day-to-day corporate business, which
range from services of a statistical and technical nature, to promotions
and information, without ever losing sight of the various
conventions that are underway and other opportunities that
arise as a result of being part of the world of Confindustria.
Last but not least, and I feel must underline the fact, is the work
that Assofluid is doing in terms of training and sharing its scientific
know-how in oil hydraulics circles. It is with this spirit
that, in collaboration with Cetop (European Fluid Power Com-

mittee), the training programme was set up which, so far, has
led to the certification of a number of centres that specialise in
teaching and certifying about twenty people who leave with a
qualification at the end of the course. In fact, I believe that,
now more than ever before, specialisation can be an added value
that is absolutely indispensable if you are to get ahead on the
employment market, even more so in an industry such as ours,
which is also at the forefront and which offers numerous possibilities
to improve and develop. I also think that this, on an
equal footing with the work being done with Confindustria, is
a great help to our associated companies”.
What does the event at Hannover Messe represent for the
Italian industry?
“There no point trying to hide the fact that Hannover Messe is
the trade-fair par excellence for the Fluid Power industry. It is a
reference model, capable of offering a worldwide showcase, and
a chance for the most important operators on our market to
meet up. Let’s not forget that Germany is one of the world’s leading
countries as far as fluid power is concerned and this is also
another reason why Italy is, without a doubt, the foreign country
with the highest number of exhibitors taking part in this
event. Therefore, attending means reinforcing even further the
value of “Made in Italy” produce for all oil hydraulics and
pneumatics companies, whilst, at the same time, making direct
contact with all the main competitors, also on an international
level”.

he idea of creating an international organisation
capable of dealing with the common
interests of European mechanical
power transmission manufacturers dates
way back to 1969, when a number of associations
decided to set up Eurotrans.
These days, the organisation consists of seven European Associations:
Agoria (Belgium), Artema (France), Assiot
(Italia), BGA (Great Britain), Swissmem (Switzerland), Vdma
(Germany) and TIF (Finland). There have been a number
of outstanding characters within the Power Transmission
Industry in the various countries at the helm of Eurotrans,
and the number of associated companies has continued
to increase year after year. Last June, Theo Maas, CEO
Mechanical Drives at Siemens, was appointed as the President
of Eurotrans. We asked him a few questions so as to
get a clearer picture of the current situation and find out
what the expectations and goals are within the European
Power Transmission Industry.
President, could you give us an insight into the Power
Transmission Industry in Europe?
Within the EU, the member associations represent the interests of
more than 600 enterprises, with a collective annual production
of estimated 14 billion euro (without the bearing business and
the automotive industry), and 160,000 employees. After a difficult
year in 2009 we are now expecting a growth of 10% in Europe
for 2010.
What does the support that Eurotrans gives to the European
Power Transmission Industry consist of?
In a globalized world, Eurotrans provides a networking platform
to establish a European voice for our industry. We work together
for standardization, European laws and statistics and we provide
a platform for international contacts to other power transmission
organizations throughout the world.
How have the Mechanical Power Transmission companies
faced up the recent global crises?
Generally speaking, quite well, because a lot of companies in Europe
had learned from previous crises and so they had established
a modern flexible production together with highly motivated em-

ployees. So we came out slightly bruised on the one hand, but
with a lot of innovative products on the other hand. This means
we can directly support our global customers. In Germany, the
government tool “temporary lay-off schemes” was also a great
help. Nevertheless, we have to take into consideration the global
margin pressure and the still available global production capacities.
In a just a few words, how would you sum up the current
situation within the industry?
At the moment we are expecting a growth of 7% within the European
mechanical engineering industry. Together with our customer
industries we are looking quite optimistically into the near
future. For the European power transmission industry we expect
a total growth of 5% in 2011. In general, the future of the European
power transmission industry looks very good, because we
provide technologies and products for the megatrends in the global
markets like efficiency, mobility, environment and energy.
The recovery after the crisis is based on a positive consumption
within the European markets and really good business in the
Asian markets. The importance of the Asian customers and the
competition from China will become stronger in the near future.
We have to work out strategies to find a good way of cooperation
with our Asian partners.
Let’s talk about Italy. What role does our country have to
play in Eurotrans?
Italy is one of the biggest producers of power transmission products
and also one of the more interesting customer markets for the
European industry. Some of the international key players for special
power transmission solutions are located there.
The Italian power transmission branch has a production share of
round about 20% (2010 figures are not available yet) in Europe.
Italy is the No. 5 exporting country (2009) with a share of
7%, shortly behind the USA.
In your opinion, where are the most opportunities to be
found within the Power Transmission Industry?
The European Power Transmission Industry is a technology
trendsetter and supports a lot of key technologies for the actual
mega trends, like Energy /Environment (Wind, solar, water…),
Mobility (Trains, E-Mobility….). So there are a lot of opportunities
for our global industry.
During next Hanover Fair, the 11 th World Gear Summit
Meeting will be held. Can you tell us what are the key
points that will be discussed?
The key point of this meeting will be a discussion about the market
developments in the triad, i.e. Asia, America and Europe. We
are expecting guests from China, Japan, India, the USA, Australia,
etc. We are intending to devise plans to prepare for the future
market pressures that will result from the growing markets
in Asia, especially from China.
What are you expectations from the exhibition in
Hanover?
The Hanover Fair is a successful global window to the present
and future possibilities of our sector. We are expecting to meet
customers, business partners and competitors from all over the
world. The Hanover Fair provides the opportunity to see the latest
trends and technological developments. We can discuss future
projects and are directly linked to other shows which present power
transmission applications (like Wind energy, E-mobility/MobiliTec
or Automation). The mixture of specialized industries
which will be showing in Hanover is a guarantee for a lot of synergies.
Also one of the Eurotrans member countries, France, will
be a partner country of the Hanover Fair.

the most important worldwide event
dedicated to technology. An exhibition
with such an outstanding international
profile can be a departure point for economic
recovery as is proving to be the case.
Smart Efficiency is the main topic up for discussion and it is
under this banner that the thirteen international fairs will be
will presenting all the key forms of industrial technology
from around the world. For years now, efficiency has been a
leading issue in various industrial sectors; it becomes much
more widespread when coupled with the prospect of configurating
industrial processes. In fact, here we need to intelligently
combine and use individual efficiency potentials.
Smart Efficiency covers all areas of cost, process and resource
efficiency. Only this intelligent interaction can enable companies
to remain operative on the market and be competitive
on an international level. In reality, this means using materials
and energy out of full respect for resources, production
process optimisation and shrewd cost management.
Hannover Messe, throughout the industrial value chain,

The thirteen international trade fairs, with a total of 6,000
exhibitors (approx. 500 Italians) from 70 countries, will be
spread out over the entire exhibition area at Hannover. Visitors

the industrial sectors: Hannover Messe is being held at just
the right time, during the initial phase of the recovery, given
the fact that truly important results are expected for 2011.
Positive development forecasts
Industrial firms have made full use of these economically difficult
times by concentrating on research and innovation and
they are now putting themselves forward on the worldwide

market with new products and solutions. It is expected that
during the upcoming edition of Hannover Messe more than
4,500 innovations will be presented. The exhibiting companies
have once again effectively shown that extremely smart
solutions already exist for tackling the challenges that are of
central importance and global relevance which the future undoubtedly
has in store.
According to data from the German machinery and industrial
equipment manufacturers’ association (VDMA), machinery
production worldwide will go up by 6% in 2010 and by a
further 8% in 2011. Germany’s main association within the
electrical and electronics industry (ZVEI) is predicting an increase
of 6% on the world’s electricity market, in both 2010
and 2011. At Hannover Messe the recovery could become
even more dynamic and result in a big boost for the various
industrial sectors. In fact, the fairs know how to illustrate in
advance the future developments within the individual sectors.
At Hannover exhibitors will be able to make new international

A round-up of the 13 trade fairs
Hannover Messe will be introducing the entire industrial chain when it comes
to creating value in a truly unique way. In fact, the 2011 edition will be
hosting all thirteen trade fairs under the same roof. Let’s take a brief look at the
characteristics of these fairs.
Industrial Automation. Process, factory and building automation systems
and solutions.
Motion, Drive & Automation (MDA). Power transmission and fluid
power technology, which is held every two years in the setting of Hannover
Messe.
Energy. A showcase and technological proposals for energy production from
both traditional and renewable sources.
Power Plant Technology. A platform for innovative technologies for coalfired,
gas, oil, hydroelectric and steam thermoelectric power plants.
Wind. Systems, services and components for wind energy. After successfully
making its debut in 2009, it is now held every two years during Hannover
Messe
MobiliTec. Hybrid and electric powertrain technologies, mobile energy
storage and alternative mobility technologies.
Digital Factory. Integrated industrial software solutions, in particular for
production and product development.
ComVac. Compressed air and vacuum technology, which now has a key role
to play in many production processes.
Industrial Supply Industrial. The entire process chain on the
subcontracting market, which is a combination of the know-how regarding
materials and technologies, development and design.
Coiltechnica. Technologies for manufacturing coils, electric motors,
generators and transformers.
SurfaceTechnology. Surface treatment techniques, ranging from pretreatments
and coatings to painting, electroplating and plasma technology plus
nanotechnologies.
MicroNanoTec. Application-based micro-system technology,
nanotechnologies and laser technology used for micro-processing materials.
Research & Technology. A showcase of all the new technologies, this year, for
the first time, it will be given the title of the leading international exhibition
of research, development and technology transfer.
Special initiatives from Progettare
The magazine Progettare, as in previous editions of Hannover Messe, has
created a highly effective package of editorial initiatives for 2011,
dedicated exclusively to the products and new technologies on offer from
the exhibitors.
The special April issue of Progettare and the supplement Fluidotecnica,
distributed to all exhibitors, contains dossiers, articles on research market
data and interviews with the main players within the industry.
Just as interesting is the special edition of Progettare International, a
tabloid format publication written entirely in English, containing
information about markets, companies, associations and ‘Made in Italy’
products regarding the following industries: pneumatic, hydraulic,
mechanical and electromechanical components, materials, mechanical
and power transmissions, motion control and industrial automations.
The editorial team will be on hand at the Fiera Milano Editore stand to
meet the people exhibiting and visiting Hannover Messe who are expected
to turn up in their droves.
France: partner country
France will be attending Hannover Messe 2011 in the role as
Partner Country under the banner of the slogan ‘Innovation
for sustainable development’ and it is hinging its presence on
the issues of energy, mobility and energy efficiency. An ambitious
idea, which will make it possible to illustrate the level of
competitiveness of French companies in many application
sectors that represent the reference themes of the Hannover
exhibition: clean and renewable energy (excluding fossil and
nuclear sources), the city of the future (mobility and construction),
eco-technologies, materials, etc.
France is organising a number of specific activities aimed at
encouraging meetings and collaborations based on research
and development between French exhibitors and their counterparts
in Germany and around the world, especially
through the Mécafuture platform, which pools together seven
French cluster groups that are operative within mechanics
and material circles.
France, together with Germany, is one of Europe’s most important
industrialised countries. Germany, with a turnover of
114 billion Euros, was France’s top business partner in 2009.

From diagnostics to miniaturisation, going even as far as monitoring functional pressure and flow
parameters. These are the main characteristics of today’s pneumatic components that are earmarked
for the automation industry: systems that are increasingly more technological and customised. But…
is the market willing to use avant-garde products that cost more? Here are some of the replies

ompared to the past, today’s pneumatic
components stand out for their hi-tech
content and, on various fronts, their wideranging
innovativeness. They are intelligent
components that combine: electronics,
computing, diagnostics and data management.
These components are able to converse with the
manufacturing network and they are directly integrated with
the most widely-used communication protocols. Manufacturers
are more and more attentive when it comes to developing
products that are not only environmentally-friendly but
also energy-saving.

Thanks to dedicated software it is possible to improve flow
control levels resulting in greater precision and reliability.
Pneumatic cylinders and valves are used a great deal in automated
systems and plants. Smaller sizes and innovative materials
are used to tackle current market demand. Finally, but
of no lesser importance, an eye-catching design and modular
components allow for applications within various sectors, in
both systems and moving machinery.
Technology: at what price?
Pneumatic components are generally mass-produced, but,
nowadays, users are on the look-out for products that are ‘tai-
lor-made’. “The job of developing components - began Giorgio
Crepaldi, Festo’s Marketing Manager- is geared towards
meeting user requirements, be they manufacturers, OEMs or
end users. Customised solutions are appreciated more and
more, and modularity and flexibility have become a must.
What’s more, valve islands, now in their 20th year, still represent
the utmost in commitment when it comes to technological
evolution. New industrial sectors want a combination
of different technologies and programming languages in the
‘automation platforms’ that are at the disposal of the user”.
In the future, when drawing up their corporate strategies,
companies that manufacture pneumatic components will not
be able to limit themselves to just the traditional use of compressed
air, but they will have to round off their technological
proposals with applications of a mechatronic, electronic
and fluid-dynamic nature if they wish to remain competitive.
“This – explained Rolf Kohler, Camozzi’s Strategic Marketing
Manager – will also lead to a more widespread and continuous
trend in miniaturising components as well as the integration
of several functions in systems that are ever more
compact and complete. Pneumatic automation will help to
increase the production cycles reached by the machines, by
integrating electronics, sensors and diagnostics in the components.
Miniaturisation is widely used to develop pilots for solenoid
valves, which are getting smaller and smaller. Proportional
pneumatic devices are also becoming very popular,
having conquered more and more fields of application in automation
circles”.
Marco Belpasso, a member of the pneumatic product management
team at Bosch Rexroth has the same opinion:
“Pneumatic power, despite being a form of technology that is
still used in all automation sectors, is being used more and

more in combination with other technologies. It must be able
to be interfaced with the electronics found in all system departments,
as well as speak the same ‘language’ and implement integrated
functions. Nowadays, pneumatic components are
made out of top quality materials and are a source of innovation
for the world of miniaturisation. They also have the ability
to be self-diagnostic. Furthermore, constant developments
must be made to their level of flexibility, much higher than
other technologies, when it comes to proposing components
that have been designed to specific customer-requirements”.
Daniele Marconi, the Sales Manager at Metal Work said: “I
feel that it is only right to talk about the current situation on
the industrial automation market, where the integration between
pneumatics and electronics is a reality that is being consolidated
more and more. From the traditional component, we
have moved on to an evolved product, one that is capable of
conversing with data transmission protocols. Before long the
so-called automation systems will be upon us which are capable
of offering machine manufacturers everything they need to
make their own equipment. Smaller geometries and performance
levels that are increasingly higher and more customised
will be indispensable characteristics for future components”.
In many ways, pneumatics can be described as a rather mature
form of technology. In automation circles, the main requests
made by machinery manufacturers in the past regarded integration
with the electronics and a reduction in both the weight
and overall dimensions of components whilst maintaining the
same performance levels. “Component miniaturisation - added

companies, as is the integration of control electronics in packs
of solenoid valves. Further developments in this field are also
possible on the diagnostics front. Another development issue
concerns the sensors that are used for monitoring the functional
pressure and flow parameters, moving on from analogical to
digital gauging. Finally, present and future developments will
include energy-saving, in terms of both the electrical absorption
of solenoid valves and improved compressed air consumption
levels”.
The development of new components also involves the
cost/performance ratio. “The constant and meticulous search
for innovative and alternative materials - according to
Emanuele Morandi, Pneumax’s Sales Manager for Italy - such
as technopolymers, miniaturisation and ever-higher performance
levels have made it possible to come up with sophisticated
products where mechanics and electronics are being integrated
more and more. Research & Development offices are constantly
working towards overcoming the technological barriers, but
the real question is: is today’s market, which, generally speaking,
is more attentive over the cost rather than technology, willing
to use avant-garde products that cost more?”.
Signs of a recovery
Figures on the pneumatics market in 2010 were positive.
Things started to pick up. Let’s try to find out what the trend
will be for the next few months of this year. “Throughout 2010
- remarked Mr. Severgnini - we witnessed a vigorous recovery,
backed by the fact that the sectors that were the most penalised
over the last two years started to bounce back plus there was an
increase in demand from foreign countries for machinery, said
increase, however, was not big enough to bring levels back to
those registered before the crisis”.
Even though the economical outlook is still showing a great
deal of uncertainty it is expected, as well as hoped for, that this
trend will become consolidated and that, in 2011, we will get
back to 2007 sales figures. “The domestic market is on the upturn
- sustained Mr. Crepaldi -, many industrial sectors have
reached 2008 figures, but the situation still needs evaluating
very carefully. Italian manufacturers, which rely more on exports
than on domestic demand, are looking for solutions that
have the best price/performance ratio, a ratio penalised, above
all, by the Asian market.
Work will be undertaken on an international level, so that
Asian companies become more aware of standards and regulations
that are sufficient to maintain reliable quality levels”.
“I feel that the Italian market - commented Mr. Morandi -, also
and, above all, in light of the ever more frequent delocalisation
operations implemented by many machine manufacturers,
will be more static and it will find it difficult to generate
any major growth levels. Much more promising is the export
sector where development possibilities are much greater and in
a state of ferment”.
Different opinions capable of mapping out an overall picture
of the pneumatic components industry.
Mr. Belpasso, for example, sustained that it is necessary to develop
processes that tend to improve corporate response in
terms of logistics and service. This is what emerged from market
analysis carried out by Bosch Rexroth: “After having witnessed
a year, 2010, where demand went up considerably and
the recovery led to a general increase in the number of orders
that were placed, 2011 should be a year based on further
growth, albeit to a lesser extent, especially as far as the Italian
market is concerned, whereas exports will continue to improve”.
In 2010 the market value regarding pneumatic components in
Italy was somewhere around the 530 million euros. The worldwide
market, however, was worth approx. 7.4 billion Euros.
“In 2011 - Mr. Kohler went on - further improvements on the
market are expected: equal to 15% in Italy, with variations
abroad, from area to area, ranging from 10% in Germany to
25% in China. If the trend continues like this, after the slump
in 2009, we could slowly but surely start heading back towards
the record levels achieved in 2007 and 2008”.
Over the last few years turnover from abroad has gone up more
than that on the domestic market and it now accounts for 70%
of Camozzi’s overall turnover. “The markets that are registering
the highest growth levels are Russia, China, Brazil and India”,
Mr. Kohler added.
“I believe that, in 2011, the market value will be back to precrisis
levels - Mr. Marconi pointed out -. There are no doubts
that most companies will take advantage of the developments
that are underway in the Bric area, Brazil, Russia, India and
China, so increasing their export levels. Growth on domestic
market, however, is more contained, with the emphasis more
on recovery than on development”.
Marco Belpasso,

Rexroth Italia, has always worked in
automation, engineering and industrial
development circles. He joined the company eight
years ago as a pneumatics designer before
becoming an applications engineer and he is now
Product Manager; what’s more, he is responsible
for the indirect issue of safety applied to the
pneumatics industry.
Rolf Kohler,
the Strategic Marketing Manager at Camozzi,
has more than twenty years of experience within
the automation industry, ten years dedicated to
researching and developing products and
components for a multinational company and
ten years in various managerial positions in sales
and marketing for two multinationals. He has
been the Strategic Marketing Manager at
Camozzi for four years now.
Giorgio Crepaldi,
Marketing Manager at Festo spa since 2008.
He joined the company in 1997 as a sales
technician before becoming the Product
Manager in 2003. He got a Master in
Marketing Management at the SDA Bocconi
University and then spent a year in Germany, at
Festo’s headquarters in Esslingen, where he
collaborated with the Product Management
Drives section.
Daniele Marconi,
Sales Manager for the Metal Work Group and a
Member of the Board of Directors. “I believe
that, in 2011, the market value will be back to

working for six years in the United Kingdom,
he then joined Pneumax in 2005, first as the
Technical Support Manager, before taking up
his current position in 2007.

Business Development Manager, has been
working for SMC Italia since 1987. His
experience lies in sales and marketing. “In
2010, we witnessed a vigorous recovery, backed
by the fact that the sectors that were the most
penalised over the last two years started to
bounce back, plus there was an increase in
demand from foreign countries for machinery”.

Growth strategies
On a market that reversed the trend throughout 2010 it is
necessary to introduce a number of new and different
strategies to those that were implemented in the past. “Focusing
on the industry’s supply of solutions and products.
These are the main points that Bosch Rexroth is decidedly
concentrating on so as to be able to operate on an evolving
market.
This will make it possible to specialise technological knowhow
in keeping with what the market really wants and,
above all, come up with solutions that are more integrated
than just the individual component.
All with the idea of increasing efficiency and making things
easier for the user”, pointed out Mr. Belpasso. Pneumatics
for Rexroth have a fundamental role to play in this process,
developing solutions that are a combination of lower consumption
levels and improved component modularity, flexibility
and compactness, especially when it comes to solenoid
valves and valve systems.
“Festo - said Mr. Crepaldi- is geared towards working in
partnership with its customers, so as to be able to work
alongside them at all stages of their supply chain, from project
planning to production, with the commitment of introducing
added value every step of the way, training included”.
The German company has also changed its geographical
organisation into a structure dedicated to strategic in-

dustrial sectors, so as to be able to speak the same language
as the user and put its own technological know-how into
key applications within every industry. An area where we
can all work together.
“To reach and maintain an important position on the market
- concluded Mr. Kohler-, Camozzi is focusing all its efforts
on innovation. Developing new products and complementary
technologies lies at the core of the corporate strategy.
Every year, the company invests between 5 and 7% of
its turnover in R&D. Every new product is developed with
a particular eye on production costs as, clearly, only a top
quality product at a price that is in line with market demand
can be competitive.
Camozzi is involved in a continuous process so as to be become
not only a supplier of pneumatic components, but also
special solutions and systems, this represents a fundamental
change for competing on a fierce market”.
Innovative products and service, in keeping with customer
requirements, are the most important aspects for Metal
Work. “For years now we have been implementing a policy
of product innovation - sustained Mr. Marconi -. In 2010
we brought out ten new components and reindustrialised
the existing products in an attempt at cutting back on costs.
What’s more, a direct and widespread presence on all markets,
where a presence is justified, enables us to keep a close
check on our users and their expectations: from the prod-

uct to the service and both the technical and sales knowhow”.
Pneumax also pays a great deal of attention to its users:
“Pneumax - pointed out Mr. Morandi - has always kept a
watchful eye over the aspects of doing business, implementing,
with assiduity, strategies that are aimed at optimising
all the processes that are fundamental to meeting customerrequirements.
Constantly innovating the product range, optimising costs,
both direct and indirect, making constant investments, in
terms of personnel and technology, paying attention to
service and supporting the user are just some of the aspects
that our day-to-day business is based on”.
Offering users products that have a good quality/price ratio
is the direction taken by SMC. The Japanese company will
continue to pursue its policy of product innovation, but
that’s not all: “Further expansion is on the cards for a range
of products that is contiguous to pneumatics - concluded
Mr. Severgnini - such as: fluid control valves, flow-meters,
thermo-chillers and a new rapidly expanding range of electric
actuators, whilst focusing on special solutions, including
both individual customised products and pre-assembled
sub-assemblies to be fitted directly onto the customers’
machinery”.

Gear reducers and gearmotors are
fundamental components found in many
machines, systems and entire industrial
departments. These days, the main requests
from users are focused on: saving energy,
turnkey solutions and products that are easy
to use. Here is a round-up of the market
strategies and technological innovations of
the main manufacturers, both in Italy and
abroad
T
he global market is forcing component
manufacturers to take a very different approach
than they used to do. Inventing,
creating and developing new solutions is
fundamental if you want to grow and continue
to grow in the long term. Companies
that manufacture gear reducers, gearmotors and, more generally
speaking, motion control components have also taken
this big need for change and innovation on board.
Innovation is not limited to just the product, it also involves
the previous and successive processes: from supplying materials,
to the after-sales service. According to the people who
were interviewed, the worst would seem to be over. 2010
came to a close with figures that were well up on 2009 and
2011 seems to have stepped up the pace even further. Exports
represent the lion’s share and developed western markets are
on the look-out for environmentally-friendly products. High
energy efficiency and solutions that are based on customerrequirements
seem to be the most important pluses. Talk of a
recovery is perhaps a slight exaggeration, but cautious optimism
no.
Promising markets
Bric (Brazil, Russia, India, China), Stim (South Africa,
Turkey, Indonesia, Mexico) and Mints (Malaysia, Indonesia,
Nigeria, Turkey, Saudi Arabia) are the acronyms used to describe
emerging markets, which will be responsible for 80%

of the world’s growth over the next 50 years. Are companies
ready to seize the opportunities on offer from these constantly
developing markets?
“Undeniably - said Paolo Colombo, End-user Manager at
Sew Eurodrive - things really started to pick up again in
2010, backed mainly by foreign demand (Bric) which our
system-manufacturing customers focused on the most.
Throughout Europe, Germany is still the main ‘driving force’
to look to for a stable recovery which is why we are convinced
that attending Hannover Messe will be an important event
also for the Italian industry”.
Paolo Tondelli, an electronics engineer at Bonfiglioli, also
feels that the company will become consolidated in 2011, especially
on the European market. As far as the global market
is concerned, however, he was keen to point out: “We predict
a big increase in exports on non-European markets, in keeping
with the pre-recession trend in growth, thanks to which,
turnover has more than doubled in four years. With regard to
the situation in German, besides being the reference market
for European companies, it recently became a fundamental
point of reference for accessing areas that are developing fast
like China”. This is why Bonfiglioli is looking at Germany
with a great deal of interest as it is a valued centre for relaunching
business.
New product lines plus the exploration and penetration of
strategic markets have had a big effect on the upturn in demand
which, this year, will bring turnover at Varvel back to
pre-crisis levels, sooner than was originally expected.
“Varvel’s attendance at Hannover Messe 2011 - commented
Francesco Berselli, the company’s Sole Administrator - was
confirmed during the last edition, when the first signs of the
crisis had already been announced, seeing that a consolidated
strategy has always convinced the top management to invest
especially during periods of market stagnation”.
Massimiliano Colombo, Marketing Manger for Brevini Power
Transmission, is also full of optimism. “We are very optimistic
about 2011. We predict an increase in double figures
boosted by sales on markets within the Bric areas. What’s
more, Turkey and the ‘advanced’ emerging countries will
have a big role to play in the recovery of the mechanical instruments
industry. Laying down more widespread industrial
foundations in these economies will help to further reinforce
our presence in many sectors that manufacture machinery
and equipment”. The strategic plan at Brevini, for the 2010-
2015 period, hypothesises a period of growth, and there will
be everything to play for. Decisions aimed at sustainability
and compatibility with the various social-environmental realities
where Brevini operates will be of great importance. With
regard to Hannover Messe, this year the Emilian company
will be involved in the Hannover Wind section.
“I believe that Hannover Messe - confirmed Vittorio Zanella,
Service Division Engineering Manager at SKF Industrie - is a
major showcase for companies, a chance to take stock for
both systems manufacturers and those who, like us, work on

the production process. From this viewpoint, I feel that it is
fundamental to be able to meet up in a strategic setting like
that of Hannover Messe, to get an all-round view of things
and find out what the synergic pointers are for the future”.
Modular and energy-saving
“Even though electro-mechanics and drives are normally
looked upon as being a mature industry - Paolo Colombo
went on -, technological innovation within the world of
SEW-Eurodrive is constant. Energy-saving was and still is
an important issue. This is why we foresee a great future for
high energy-efficiency technology applied to both asynchronous
motors, with the Premium IE3 range of motors,
and the brushless motors, represented by the Movigear, a real
point of excellence in the integration of efficient components,
capable of obtaining IE4 classification”. In the field
of system decentralisation, mention must be made of the
extension of the SEW range with addition of the Movipro,
an inverter with a range of up to 30 kW, capable of integrating
functions of a communication, multi-axis control
and energy-regeneration nature in the various versions.
On the technological front, Mr. Berselli said: “Since the
1990s, Varvel’s design process has been focused on the
search for modularity in common elements found in the
various product ranges, both existing and new. This design
effort has led to production synergies, so stepping up productivity,
efficiency and, as a result, energy-saving in the
new products that have benefitted from the distribution
concerns that Varvel has set up in more than sixty-five countries
around the world”.
Bonfiglioli has developed a number of systems in synergy
with user-requirements. These days, automation is of fundamental
importance in any production system. “We are
seeing more and more that the needs of our automation
customers are extremely clear: greater attention to the efficient
use of energy, in all its forms; a growing interest in
turnkey solutions, which are a combination of the various
series in the Bonfiglioli range, resulting in systems with
higher added value; products that are easy to use, all of
which have always characterised what we have to offer” -
pointed out Mr. Tondelli.
Just to let you know: SKF does not deal directly with the
production of gear reducers and gearmotors, but it is operative
within the industry through its re-engineering and revision
work. “With this in mind – explained Mr. Zanella-,
our main aim is optimisation in line with the actual crucial
operational parameters of the machinery; we focus on the
processing factors so as to be able to understand what the
crucial elements of the machinery are and make the most
appropriate improvements based on the production requirements
of a given plant, also on a component level”.
The mechanics industry is constantly evolving, albeit slowly.
Brevini is focusing on gear reducers that are big and powerful,
because, according to the company, this market offers
PAOLO TONDELLI,
44 years old, graduated from the Milan
Polytechnic in electronic engineering. He has been
working for Bonfiglioli for six years, first as a
Product Manager, the as the Product Innovation
and Portfolio Planning Manager. He has done
lots of innovative research, applying consolidated
techniques for the systematic generation of ideas
and problem-solving (QFD, Triz).
MASSIMILIANO COLOMBO
is the first Marketing Manager from outside the
family in the history of the Brevini company: the
marketing was previously done by the sales
department. After graduating in Economic
History at the University of Bologna, he worked
for five years in the family business (textile
industry). Training of an entrepreneurial nature
was the departure point for various experiences
working for a number of multinational companies: from ceramics to electromechanics,
at leading international companies such as Kone which had its
operational base in Milan. Having worked for Kone for eight years in Finland
and Italy, he then joined Brevini Power Transmission in 2000.
PAOLO COLOMBO
Working for SEW-Eurodrive since February
2008, the engineer is the manager of the ‘End
User’ sector. He supports the in-house
organisation at SEW and is directly involved
with the customers when it comes to matters of a
technical and commercial nature linked to the
world of the ‘end user’, from products and
solutions for saving energy to SEW services
for system management and upkeep.
VITTORIO ZANELLA,
Service Division Engineering Manager at SKF
Industrie. He joined SKF Industrie in April
2004. From 2004 to 2006 he was the
Application & Business Engineer for the iron and
steel, marine and machine tool industries. From
2007 to 2008 he was the group leader for the
iron and steel, marine, machine tool, heavy duty
industrial applications, gear reducers, electric
motors, transportation systems and industrial automation industries. From 2008
to 2010 he was the Application Engineering Manager for SKF’s Service Division
and since 2010 has been the Engineering Manager for SKF’s Service Division in

FRANCESCO BERSELLI
graduated in Economy and Commerce. He is the
son of Cesare Berselli, the founder of the company
(1955). In the late 1960s, at the tender age of
25, he joined the family business, holding a
number of different positions before becoming the
Sole Administrator and then the President of the
Board of Directors. Having first worked
alongside his father, he then took over complete
control of the administration and financial side of things. He was also
responsible for developing the company’s computer system, penetrating foreign
markets and, the product development process.

sectors – chipped in Massimiliano Colombo - that have
enormous growth potential, if backed-up by the right investments
in research and innovation: waste management
and clean energy are taking their first tentative steps and are

market will be on the look-out for more electronics which
will make the work done by machines and systems more efficient.
Changes in market shares, in the future, will be
linked to the ability to come up with solutions that are capable

What’s more, all the logistics of the materials and
the goods are going through a phase of global transformation”.
Applications
Today’s gear reducers and gearmotors are used in many
ways: in manufacturing systems, in logistics, in packaging
machinery, in the iron and steel industry, in agricultural
machinery, in robots, etc. In short, they are components
that are capable of withstanding high levels of stress, or be
extremely accurate. What’s more, specific configurations allow
for fast kinematic mechanisms. The installation of electronics
turns traditional mechanical components into intelligent
systems. From this point of view, manufacturers have
come a long way over the last the years.
“Almost 10% of our turnover – claimed Massimiliano
Colombo - comes from clean energy production, whereas
7% comes from industrial waste recycling systems. The application
industry concerning wind generators requires gear
reducers mainly for rotating the generator blades and the
turret”. Furthermore, Brevini is becoming increasingly more
successful in heavy duty application industries: mining machinery,
material handling, the building trade, cement,

Bonfiglioli is also focusing on technology. “One of Bonfiglioli’s

heavy duty mechanics, electro-technics, command and control
electronics”. This extensive know-how is an asset that
can quickly and efficiently be turned into products that are
earmarked for the most varied of applications. This explains
how Bonfiglioli is able to flank the traditional industrial sectors
that it is operative in, packaging, food & beverage,

The new year brought with it something
completely new: the Blue Air Srl company is
now part of the Aignep world. Specialising
in the production of kits earmarked for assembling
pneumatic cylinders, back in the early 1990s Blue
Air was one of the first companies in the world to

extremely important for its cylinder manufacturing
customers to be able to produce four series of

beginning, Blue Air has always placed a great

ROTARY ACTUATORS
The series of R and RA rotary actuators,
available in 12 different sizes, by Agop
Oleoidraulica, member of Montanhy -
draulik group, can transmit torques from
30 to 10,000 daNm (calculated at pressures
of 130 and 165 bars respectively).
The standard version of these rotary actuators
with sturdy structure (the body is
made of cast iron or die cast steel)
includes rotation control millimetric
adjustment (±3°) and a safety valve for the
lubricating oil.
Upon demand are available also asymmetric
rotations, integrated position transducers,
fixing feet, stroke end cushioning
systems.
Cu stomized solutions can be developed
both to meet specific technical characteristics
(for instance a redundant position
control system) or higher torque outputs
(executions with 200,000 daNm have
already been produced). Compact and
with high mechanical and hydraulic efficiency,
the rotary actuators constitute a
perfect system together with the linear
cylinders by Agop/Montanhydraulik.
PNEUMATIC CYLINDERS
Pneumatic cylinders conforming to ISO
15552 regulations, with 160-200-250-
320 diameter, by Aignep, are available
also in the ‘complete kit’ version and provided
with simple and clear assembling
instructions. Shell-moulded aluminium
heads appear very sturdy and with pleasant
design, they have been studied with
particular stiffening ribs to withstand
high loads and solicitations.
The guided piston, made by aluminium
shell mould, too, assures a linear motion,
thus avoiding the piston rod flexion at the
stroke end.
All dynamic seals are standard, made of
polyurethane or, as an alternative, of
FKM. It can be supplied also a version
with metal scraper on the rod to remove
resistant incrustations, particularly suitable
for cement works, welding plants or
outdoor applications to remove the
formed ice from the rod.
HALOGEN-FREE HYDRAULIC HOSES
Alfagomma, also in line with the latest
OEM environmental requisites for
hydraulic hoses not containing Chlorine,
Fluorine and Iodine, has replaced its standard
range of hydraulic hoses with an
environmental friendly range of product.
It can be identified by the acronym “HF”
on the branding text of the hose and
includes a new set of part numbers. It is
available in the following hose families:
1SN, 2SN, R6, R3, 1TE, 2TE, 3TE.
STAINLESS STEEL CYLINDERS
Presented by A.P.I., the cylinders conforming
to DIN ISO 6431 and VDMA
24 562 standards, with bores from 32 to
200 mm, are provided with round barrel
and external tie-rods, with adjustable
cushionings and standard magnetic aluminum
piston, with integrated rubber
impact absorbers.
Such cylinders can be supplied either with
standard piston rod or with through pis-
ton rod, with seals for high temperatures
(max. 150 °C) and special versions on
request.
The front head is equipped with a tightness
bush and piston rod guide easy to be
disassembled in order to facilitate the
replacement of the tight seal, considered
more exposed to the environment deterioration.
In this way, the timing for possible
maintenance is very decreased.
The series is completed by mounting
accessories, they too made of stainless
steel.
Such pneumatic components, developed
and manufactured for the food industry,
as per CEE Standards, are completely
made of stainless steel AISI 316L.
On request, they can be also supplied
with the Declaration of Conformity to
Directive ATEX 94/9/CE, class 2 GDc
T5.
DIGITAL SERVOACTUATORS
Digital servoactuators by Atos represent
the electrohydraulic solution to the
imperative demand for easier subsystems
configurations, expressed by the manufacturers
of modern machinery.

The wide range of power transmission
components produced and distributed by
Bea Ingranaggi finds applications in several
fields including mechanical engineering,
textiles, agriculture, food processing, packaging,
machinery for wood, marble and

sizes, the lines HDP and HPO can now
provide a solution to the applications
requiring torque up to 195,000 Nm.
Therefore, the two new reduction gears are

SOLENOID VALVES FOR FLUIDS
K8 is the name of a range of sub-miniature
2-and 3-way high performance solenoid
valves, designed by Camozzi for the control
of micro-components for applications
in the sectors of pneumatics, medical,
portable instruments and for modular and
compact fluido-dynamic systems, where in
any case power consumption, size and
weight are important design criteria.
Technical characteristics: inner diameter,
0.5-1 mm; power, 0.6 W; pressure, 0-10
bars; voltage, 6-12-24 Vd.c. The target of
obtaining a small-size solenoid valve has led
to the decision of creating a cylindrical
geometry, so that the armature of the magnetic
circuit acts also as external shell,
besides housing o-rings for the mechanical
seal.
The valve manufactured in this way can be
directly inserted into the sub-base, without
fasteners and without protruding outside;
the so attained configuration is called ‘cartridge-type’.
CARTRIDGE VALVES

ComIntec presents on the market a compact
torque limiter, backlash-free and with
reduced inertia moment (DSS/SG).
It proposes a positive spring version where

spring version the setting method is the
opposite of the previous one, as are used
springs designed to achieve a constant
transmission up to the set torque, while an

EK1P series is the new category of economic
pumps produced by Marzocchi Pompe.
They have the same interface as K1P
pumps, but they have been specifically developed
for those applications with submerged
pump, such as hydraulic power
packs using a cheap product but capable of
excellent mechanical and hydraulic performance.
The structure of EK1P pumps is
really innovative, the number of the components
has been drastically reduced. As a
matter of fact, the external structure is composed
by two parts made of die-cast aluminium,
the axial compensation is assured
by one sintered steel plate and the sliding
seats of the gears are directly obtained on
the external structure. The new configura-
tion has allowed a drastic reduction of the
axial dimensions of the pump and the decrease
of its weight up to 37%. The family
of EK1P pumps covers a range of displacements
between 1.0 and 4.8 cm 3 /rev and operating
pressures from 210 to 250 bars.
TIMING BELT
Platinum timing belt drive, by Megadyne,
offers new application opportunities
against alternative systems, like gears and
chains. It is a rubber timing belt, which
solves the problems related to the use of
steel and aramide cords, thanks to the

This new unit, which goes by the name of
Syntesi, stands out for the fact that the
performance levels are extremely high despite
its size and weight: the size 1 filter regulator,
which measures 42 x 42 mm, has a flow rate of
2400 Nl/min, double that of most existing units of
the same size.
An intelligent modular connecting system does
away with the traditional elements such as tie
rods, cams and yokes. With the emphasis being
on product innovation, Metal Work now ranks
among the world’s leading manufacturers of

The new Multiport in-line filter was specifically

Multiport is an in-line filter with operational

delivery filter, a lubrication filter, an off-line filter,

direct tank discharge bypass valve with

same side; what’s more, two inlet connections

BEVEL GEARS

special bevel gears, is able to solve any
problem connected with power transmission
of rotary motion between two
axes arranged at 90°.
The standard range includes nine different
sizes, shafts from 8 to 35 mm, powers
up to 15 kW and rotation speed up
to 3,000 rpm. DZ and ZP right-angle
drivers are designed for industrial applications
where rotary power must be
transferred between two shafts positioned
at right-angles each other.
They can be with two or three outputs,
with 1/1, 1/2 or 1/3 transmission ratios.
Besides the standard series, it is available
a wide range of bevel gears upon customers’
specifications, such as stainless
steel right angle drivers for applications
in the food processing and a new range
of square gearboxes.
ROD ENDS AND FORKS
BJT rod ends by Elesa are particularly
suitable for applications in rotary, oscillatory
and linear motions, also in very
aggressive environments, in presence of
water or wetness, thin powders, dirtiness,
textile fibres, machining residues.
The shaft rotation movement can occur
directly in the diameter inside the spherical
cap, as this is made of self-lubricating
material.
The fixing is attained by means of bores
or threaded pins. FJT forks, still by
Elesa, are very suitable for various drives,
for instance of pneumatic cylinders, also
in presence of water or wetness.
They are fixed by a threaded hole and
have two different assembling systems:
with clip-type pin and with pin and
seeger ring.
Thanks to the use of technopolymers,
these products provide the user with various
advantages shared by most part of
plastic materials used in
the industrial field.
PRESSURE TRANSDUCERS
The pressure transducers of the PTE
series, by Elettrotec, have been studied
for all industrial applications, in the
ambit of processes and systems for the
pressure measuring and control. A
ceramic sensor based on proven technology
guarantees very good performances
and high stability, making these transducers
suitable for satisfying the most
demanding requirements, even in very
difficult environments. Besides, their
compact structure makes them ideal for
installations where the small overall
dimensions are an essential criterion of
choice. Their compactness, sturdiness
and stability in time make them very
suitable for applications where the main

INTAKE VALVES FOR COMPRESSORS
Fai Filtri intake valves belonging to the
SSRA series are suitable for controlling
rotary screw compressors in the power
range from 3 to 30 kW (FAD from 0.3
to 4.5 m 3 /min); they perform the
load/unload control, with venting function
of the oil separator vessel and closed
loop air recirculation. They are based on
a very simple and rational mechanical –
pneumatic architecture; pneumatically
actuated, these devices belong to the
family of so called “normally open”
valves, which require the presence of
pressure in the circuit to perform and to
keep the closed status of the main piston.
Connecting flanges are available for
the most diffused screw air ends; solenoid
valves available upon customer
specification (voltage/frequency/certifications).
Intake valves can also be built
in the simple “non return” version (not
actuated valves).
HIGH PERFORMANCE COUPLING
The FFH 1.8” coupling by Faster
springs from the need of having a coupling
characterized by very high performances:
despite its small sizes, in fact,
it can reach a working pressure of 35
MPa and a nominal flow rate of a good
12 litres per minute. It has undergone
severe in-house certification tests (conforming
to ISO 7241-2
regulations), such as the
pulsating pressure test
(133% of the maximum
operating pressure) for a
duration of one million

cycles and has reached a burst pressure of
140 MPa in the related tests.
VISUAL LEVEL INDICATORS
F.lli Giacomello proposes on the market
the new visual level indictor LVC, which
allows controlling the liquid level in
constant, clear and precise way at any
time. The traditional visual level has
been coupled with a raster: this provides
several technical advantages, such as the
visual indication on the field and from
remote (with the use of a transducer 4-
20 mA) of the level measure and the
activation, through sensors, of additional
controls. Numerous options are available:
different polymeric materials that
can be used; possibility of using multiple
sensors along the level height; tap interrupting
the flow of liquid from the tank
to the level indicator; temperature sensor
integrated into the lower body of the
level indicator. A new bypass was born,
slimmer, multitasking and cost-effective.
CARTRIDGE VALVES AND MANIFOLDS
Flucom produces cartridge valves and
manifolds in four sizes (20, 30, 50, 70)
according to ISO 6149 regulations and
covering a range of capacities up to 400
l and 420 bar pressure. Therefore, they
are fully interchangeable with metric
cavities and valves such as Comatrol/
Sauer, Hydac, Bosch Rexroth. The constant
development of product applications
has led to the realization of valves
and manifolds tailor-made according to
final customers’ requirements. These
collaborations have given birth, for
instance, to new valves and proportional
solenoid valves, new types of special
anti-corrosion treatments, special valves
and manifolds made of stainless steel.
TWO-JAW PNEUMATIC GRIPPERS
PQ two-jaw pneumatic grippers with
self-centring parallel action, by Gimatic,
use a lever transmission to transmit the
force from the piston to jaws, reducing
almost to zero the perpendicular component.
This implies lower frictions in the
guide, then less wear and higher efficiency:
the energy efficiency of the gripper
increases from 70% (with an inclinedplane
system) to 90% (with the lever system).
Besides, the guide is less stressed
by the forces produced inside the gripper.
They have very sturdy guides, stain-
less steel jaws, different possibilities of
fixing and feeding, long travels (from 15
to 63 mm) and total clamping forces
from 400 N for the smallest size
(PQ3015) to 1,860 N for the biggest
one (PQ6063).
SLEWING BEARINGS
The ISB brand (Italcuscinetti), synonymous
of Quality, Stock and Service, is
increasing its already wide product
range, including bearings, self-aligning
bearing units, spherical plain bearings,
rod ends, clevises, bushes, polymeric
bearings, bonderized bearings for high
temperatures, ball transfer units, precision
balls, precision rollers and needles,
introducing slewing bearings.
ISB is thus further able to satisfy the
requests of transmission components
issued by the world major manufacturers
and retailers.

SURFACE TREATMENT
The innovative grey zinc/nickel protection
coating, introduced by Larga to
replace the classical white zinc treatment
with trivalent chromium, is characterized
by a nickel content of 12-16%, a
thickness of 6-15 µm and the application
of a final layer of sealant, to provide the
maximum resistance to corrosion:
according to the severe specifications of
automotive tests, the occurrence of red
rust can be only after 720 hours. The
treatment is completely chromium VI
free, in compliance with the environmental
protection standards. From the
user’s point of view, the installation
torque values do not differ from the data
shown on the existing technical manuals
and the compatibility with the most
common hydraulic fluids is assured.

IN-LINE FILTER
The in-line Multiport filter has been developed
by MP Filtri to be able to meet the market’s
requirements, with the goal of enabling
the designer to customize the applications of a
standard product. It is an in-line filter with
working pressure up to 80 bar, available in
four connection lengths up to 1” and maximum
flow rate of 200 l/min. The filter covers
all hydraulic system needs, in both industrial
and mobile applications, and it is ideal as
return filter, delivery filter, lubrication filter,
off-line filter, suction/return filter
on combined circuits, heat
exchanger cutout for cold starts
and direct tank discharge
bypass valve with continuous
flow filtration.

HIGH EFFICIENCY MOTORS
Compared with traditional EFF2=IE1 induction
motors, the new range of high-efficiency
motors, of class IE2/IE3, proposed by Neri
Motori, makes it possible to recover the overinvestment
made to purchase them within the
first year of use, permitting then, starting from
the second year on, energy savings based on
the electricity rate applied, which will remain
unchanged. They offer a complete IE2=EFF1
range of motors, available in all polarities
included in the regulations in force, up to 30
kW for 0/600 V voltages and 50 and/or 60
Hz frequencies: IE1 (similar to EFF.2 class)
for motors not included in the 2005/32/CE
directive; IE2 (similar to EFF.1 class) as standard
production – deadline 15th June 2011;
IE3 (similar to the Nema Premium –
Eisa2007/Epact class) upon demand. These
motors can be manufactured in compliance
with USA and Canadian standards on product
safety, as per Neri Motori UL (E201235)
and CSA (231199) File numbers.
HYDRAULIC AND ORBITAL MOTORS
The range of axial pistons hydraulic motors
with fixed and variable displacement by
Oleodinamica Geco is today composed by
three lines: HF-HV (400 bars 10-2,000 rpm),
KF-KV (250 bars 1-1,000 rpm), SF (150 bars
10-500 rpm), for a total of about 50 different
models. Besides, the company has completed
its products with a complete line of orbital
motors consisting of about 1,000 different
models to satisfy all customer requirements
with a product standing out for high quality
level and economic competitiveness. For two
consecutive editions, 2000 and 2002, it was
awarded for innovation by a commission of
experts of Fluidtrans Compomac: for the creation
of a hydraulic servomotor in 2000 and a
Brake Clutching System in 2002, witnessing

‘ENERGY SAVING’ DRYERS
Since 1990 O.M.I. has been designing, manufacturing
and selling a complete range of
products in the field of Compressed Air and
Industrial Refrigeration Treatment. Its solutions
are projected by highly qualified technicians
using the most cutting-edge technologies
available on the market.
Since its establishment, it has been aiming at
serving the global market and nowadays it is
proud of distributing its products in over 80
countries in the world, thanks to a widespread
network of distributors, dealers and authorized
service centres.
The Hannover Messe is a customary appointment
for the company and an opportunity to
introduce, apart from its standard products
range, a new series of “Energy Saving” air dryers
designed to reach the highest level of efficiency
and reliability in full respect of the environment.
SKIVING MACHINE
The skiving machine SPF6, by OP, is a complete
and functional equipment capable of
simultaneously or separately skiving the interior
and exterior surface of flexible hydraulic
hoses as well as obtaining perfect preassembly
of the fitting thanks to the insertion function
with which it is provided. Its main technical
features are: simultaneous skiving function
(interior and exterior) for hoses measuring up
to 2”; interior and exterior skiving function
(not simultaneous) for hoses measuring up to
3”; fittings insertion function for hoses meas-
uring up to 3”; self-centring pneumatic
clamp; device for centring the return stroke of
the piston that allows accelerating the skiving
and insertion function; safety device which
prevents the actuation of the machine when
the safety casing is open.
SHAFT SEALS
The shaft seals TTO Protek for rotary shafts,
distributed by OT Seals, have been studied to
provide longer life and higher protection than
traditional seals. The Protek range is subdivided
into: Kopro, for protection against external
bodies, and Skudo, for a total protection from
external contamination without shaft wear.
Kopro is suitable for joints, pinions, power
takeoffs, input shafts of reducers, food processing
machines; Skudo for axles, agricultural,
manufacturing and road machines, tractors,
agricultural implements, wind generators,
output shafts of reducers. Skudo seals
provide very good performance, thanks to
their static and dynamic seal. The mounting
occurs through interference both on the seat
and on the shaft and they differ for the number
of internal labyrinths. They offer reliability
in presence of dust, mud and water, they
avoid damages in the handling phase, they do
not require the shaft grinding or hardening
and they can be replaced without mechanical
interventions on the shaft itself.
PRESSURE REGULATORS
The new range of electronically-controlled
proportional pressure regulators, called ‘Five
to One’, by Pneumax, guarantees very high
level performances in terms of sensitivity, precision
and flexibility, assuring, at the same
time, user-friendliness and immediate use.
Through the display with four figures and
three buttons, the user can easily configure the
operating parameters of the product. Still
through display, it is possible to define: the
analogue tension or current output, the digital
24 Vc.c output with intervention interval and
moreover, still selectable by the operator
through the display use, the pressure rise ramp
with five different approach modalities. All
these control modalities are included in the
standard version of the product. The regulator
range is completed by the 0 size, ideal for
knocking down costs when the management
of a minimum air quantity is required.

FITTINGS AND ADAPTORS
Rastelli Raccordi has presented some innovations
suitable for satisfying the requirements
of the most demanding customers in terms of
performances and services. We are speaking of
the production of stainless steel moulded fittings,
T -45°-90°, modified by using hexagonal
moulded metal instead of round, to
improve the more and more performing characteristics.
It can be supplied upon demand
the treatment zinc/nickel + protective film
that, maintaining the mechanical characteristics
and the conformity with the European
Directives about the environmental impact of
Cr3+ (trivalent chromium + sealing film),
guarantees the resistance in salt fog ≤ 700
hours (according to ISO 9227 - Astm 8117).
It has also widened the range of adaptors Bspp
60°, Bspt, NPT and SAE J514 – JEC 37°.
Finally, it informs that it has succeeded, within
the established terms, in activating by
100% the automated packaging/stocking system,
storage in 17,000 posts and handling/1
day of more than 2,000 items, permitting
labellings able to satisfy even the most sophisticated
systems.
SILENCERS AND FILTERS
In its new catalogue S.A.F. proposes its range
of silencers with metal nipple and filtering element
in sintered bronze, 36 microns, to be fitted
at exhaust ports in order to reduce the
noise of the exhausting air. This range is available
with threaded ports from M5 up to 1”

and completes the series in acetalic resin available
both in the dynamic and in the static version.
The dynamic silencers, in comparison
with the static ones, are characterized by
slightly higher flow capacity. Both versions are
available with threaded ports from 1/8 up to
1”. Furthermore, various types of stainless
steel silencers are available for applications in
aggressive atmospheres.
ACCUMULATORS AND PULSATION
Saip exclusively works in the fields of the
research, development and manufacture of
hydropneumatic accumulators and pulsation
dampeners. In order to meet special needs, it
proposes a wide range of elastomers and it is
well-known on the market for its different
special products (membrane accumulators
with bag, piston; products made using carbon
steel, Aisi 316L, PVC, Hastelloy C, Incoloy,
dampers with Ptfe or metal membrane).
Within its production it is worth pointing
out: pulsation dampers with patented
through-flow, ideal for high-viscosity liquids
and for in-line washing in the food and industrial
painting sectors, where sterilization and
cleaning are necessary without removing the
damper from the line. Available also the electron-beam
welded accumulators in stainless
steel and in carbon steel and the electronic system
for the automatic control of the preload
pressure for processes with variable operating
pressures.
MOTORS AND DISTRIBUTORS
Salami has widened its production range
with the following items: 2ME, VDM6A,
VD8A – LS. 2ME, series of motors that
assure excellent performance in terms of
noiseless thanks to the extra polishing and
the innovative profile of the gears; they are
available in the most common configurations
of Fan drive applications. VDM6A,
monoblock directional control valve purposely
developed for Backhoe loader applications
thanks to the increased stroke of the spools
compared to the solutions commonly in use.
VD8A – LS, electroproportional distributor
with simple load sensing control, it is simple,
reliable and economical because the only
built-in compensator in the inlet assures a precise
control under all different working conditions;
it is reliable because it uses the technology
of the well-known 20 rpm distributor
(VD8A); it is economical because it reaches a
very good compromise between the electroproportional
multi-compensated solutions
with integrated electronics that are available
today and the traditional electric on/off distributor.
ROLLER BEARINGS
Schaeffler Group presents three new versions
of INA roller bearings: the massive roller bearing
–D X-life with boosted performances for
downsizing, the massive X-life roller bearing
with cage Twin Cage and reduced friction and
the roller slimline case with radial section
height of just 1.5 mm. The new steel profiled
cage, recently developed for the massive roller
bearing –D, confers it a much higher loading
capacity. Its design allows increasing both the
number of rollers and their length supporting
the load, keeping the bearing sizes unchanged.
Consequently, the new massive roller bearing
X-life of the series NK 55/25-D-XL reaches a
loading capacity increased by 25%. A bearing
with the above-indicated size can then reach a
loading capacity that in the past required the
use of a roller bearing X-life of the series NK
75/25-XL.
HEAT EXCHANGER
Combined Heat and Power (CHP) is a simultaneous
generation within a single process
of heat energy and electric or mechanical energy.
Heat energy is gained through the regeneration
of the exhaust gases of an engine
that is generally endothermic, fed with fossil
fuels or renewable sources. The fundamental
component, in order to obtain this process, is
the tube bundle heat exchanger. The main
features of the tube bundle heat exchanger to
be installed on CHP plants, proposed by
Sesino, are: exchanger completely manufactured
in stainless steel; TIG soldering of
the single tubes on the plates for heat resistance
up to over 500 °C; full possible inspection
both from the tube and the shell
side for each type of maintenance; dimensioning
achieved through HTRI calculation
programme; maximum standard
working pressure up to 10 bar, with the
possibility of producing exchangers with a
working pressure up to 300 bar; the tightness
of the exchangers is 100% tested; design
and manufacture according to PED
regulations and related certification issue.
WIND PROPELLED GENERATOR
The wind propelled compressed air generator,
designed by Teseo, is a wind turbine with horizontal
rotation axis, consisting of a spindle running
on ball bearings that supports three aluminium
blades and is connected with the shaft
of an air compressor. This generator is mounted
on the top of a high aluminum framework
by means of a swiveling arm. The generated
compressed air is carried through pipes to a
reservoir at the base of the supporting frame-

work, and then is stored in large pressure vessels.
This innovative solution provides outstanding
advantages: it uses clean energy from
a renewable source at zero cost; it is based on
very simple and cost-effective equipment; it is
independent from the wind direction and it
produces energy even at low wind speeds; it
allows storing energy as compressed air in vessels
and the whole system is made of aluminium,
material that is 90% recyclable.
GEARBOXES
Transtecno designs and produces a wide
range of gearboxes, whose most representative
lines are: CM worm-gearboxes: series of gearboxes
composed by nine sizes, characterized
by high modularity (numerous kits and accessories);
CMG helical gearboxes: series of gearboxes
with helical cylindrical gears composed
by six sizes, including the recent 00 and 05.
The high engineering level allows realizing any
configuration in very fast way, suitably combining
the eight specific kits of which it is
composed; CMB bevel helical gearboxes:
series of gearboxes with helical gears composed
by five sizes, including the recent 402
and 502. The CMB series follows the same
structural principle as CMG, with the same
logic of kits and the same components. It is
also characterized by a great innovation: interchangeability.
As a matter of fact, such gearboxes
and the CM series of worm-gearboxes
share the same set-ups and the same accessories.
PRESSURE FILTERS
Within the wide range of pressure filters produced
by UFI Hydraulic Division, the PL
series is among the best sellers. These filters are
designed for working pressures up to 315 bars
and assure excellent filtration efficiency; their
peculiarity is the direct manifold mounting,
which means a quick and leakage-free fixing as
well as compact design, according to the latest
techniques used in hydraulic systems. Now
available in 11 sizes, they can be used for a
wide range of flow rates. The filter elements
are made of inorganic microfibers that assure
ßx(c) ≥ 1.000 ratio and high dirtiness-holding
capacity according to the ISO 16889 specifi-
cation (Multi Pass Test). A choice among a
variety of filtration degrees allows achieving
the required contamination class. A differential
clogging indicator (visual, electrical, with
thermostat or visual-electrical) can be fitted on
the filter housing.
The new generation of parallel shaft-mounted

AND BEVEL/HELICAL GEARBOXES
gearboxes, series RN – RO – RV, by Varvel,
are manufactured with a common housing
that, through the mounting of the appropriate
input module, is configured in the three specific
lines: parallel shaft-mounted RN gearboxes,
horizontal bevel/helical RO gearboxes,
vertical bevel/helical RV gearboxes. The different
versions available on the market have
been conceived as a single project, even if each
product has its own specific version.
Gearboxes are manufactured in six sizes– aluminium
die-casting for the first three and cast
iron for the others – with 30 reduction ratios
in 2 and 3 stages and output torques between
180 and 3,200 Nm. Numerous sides for foot
or flange mounting, reaction arms for parallel
shaft mounted gearboxes and output
shafts are foreseen (hollow with throughout
keyway, hollow with shrink-disk, hollow
with splines and solid with single or double
end) to permit a wide range of applications.
HIGH PRESSURE HOSES
Exceed is the new line of high-pressure hoses
developed by Veba group for end-users. In
conformity with the highest pressure and service-life
levels according to SAE standards and
numerous international regulations – proposed
in 10 sizes with pressures from 21 to 35
Megapascals - the line products are extremely
light and offer superior flexibility exceeding
the average. Besides, the new proposal needs
less space and thus reduces the encumbrance
on machinery for indoor and outdoor use.
The hoses are produced according to the
international regulation ISO 18752, making
the choice of the product simple and fast for
the end user. VEBA group offers to its cus-
tomers a new generation product, which is
integrated and tested and frees the customer
from the burden and potential problems
deriving from the assembly of the product
itself.
LINEAR SYSTEMS
High Performance RP+ linear systems by
Wittenstein show how an intelligent combination
of specifically developed smart drive
technology and gear teeth can result in highquality,
modular, drive solutions, capable of
transferring higher power density and feeding
forces up to 112,400 N. The system is composed
by a powerful gearhead with significantly
increased permissible torques to enable
the higher control on rack and pinion and to
improve the system rigidity and positioning
accuracy.
Its interface with 8 fixing holes considerably
shortens the assembly process times and
increases reliability. Thanks to the high per-
formances of the whole system, it is possible to
use downsized gearheads, pinions and racks,
attaining better performances in terms of positioning
accuracy, system rigidity, power density
and feeding force. Typical application
fields: mac hine tools and in general all
automation axes.
CABLE REELS
The traditional series of spring cable reels by
has undergone a complete restyling and the
new ‘Series X 5000’ was born. Besides modifying
their look, redesigning the outer halfcases,
numerous technical modifications and
improvements have been carried out, making
the product more and more professional and
reliable. As a matter of fact, Zeca, in compliance
with what regulations provide for, has
conformed all its range of cable reels with ‘IEC
1242’ regulations and the ‘626’ law, being
allowed to put the ‘CE’ marking for a long
time. Today the models ‘XL’ and ‘XF’ of the
new ‘Series X 5000’ are equipped with thermal
circuit breaker for the protection from
overloads and double contact to earth while all
are provided with ‘H05VV-F’ cable complying
with CEI 20-35 regulations. The wound
cable lengths go from 12.5+1.5 m of the
model with one conductor up to 3+1.5 m for
the model with eight conductors. The light
weight (4 kg) and the small sizes (290 x 145 x
310 mm) make it a really unique and very reliable
product.
