Random and Disordered Thoughts - By Jetsam Once again we are blessed with a wonderful article by Peter Walters tracing the history of perhaps our most important single paint ingredient, certainly our most important white pigment in the modern age. When you look back at things like white lead, one is able to imagine that white paint, or even orange paint, was a toxic nasty that could poison us and make us all sterile. A bit like the ancient Romans with their lead water pipes. Titanium dioxide is completely the opposite, a potential environmental life saver. We have even been sent an article that extols the virtues of cleaning the atmosphere using nano-sized titanium dioxide. In this age of global warming and carbon tax, I note that the scientific community has determined that growing trees is contributing more to global warming because of the dark colour than the benefit from adsorbing carbon dioxide. Maybe our government could fund research into growing white trees. Some scientists worked out the positive contribution to climate cooling if every roof was painted white. But there are a growing number of local bodies, or the remnants of them if you live in Auckland, that are specifying light reflectance values of no more than 55%, medium to dark coloured houses with, presumably, correspondingly dark coloured roofs. With the huge potential of titanium dioxide to save the planet, or at least us from ourselves more likely, you have to wonder about the commitment or the intelligence of the politicians that make up these rules, or are they just paying lip service to global warming? After all, carbon is easy to tax and as we all seem to have forgotten in the euphoria of the rugby world cup, so are people.
