New Worker Joins<br />

Staff <strong>of</strong><br />

Council On Aging<br />

Mrs. Mary Snyder, one <strong>of</strong> the St<strong>at</strong>e's<br />

leading authorities in the field <strong>of</strong> geron-<br />

tology, has been added to the staff <strong>of</strong><br />

the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> Governor's Cooordin<strong>at</strong>ing<br />

Council on Aging, Eddie Brown,<br />

Executive Director, announced.<br />

Mrs. Snyder comes to the Raleigh job<br />

from the UNC School <strong>of</strong> Nursing <strong>at</strong><br />

<strong>Chapel</strong> <strong>Hill</strong> where she had been an in-<br />

structor and program coordin<strong>at</strong>or in<br />

projects to aid older citizens. Before<br />

th<strong>at</strong>, she was Assistant Director <strong>of</strong><br />

Nursing Services, S. E. Area, for the<br />

American N<strong>at</strong>ional Red Cross in Atlan-<br />

ta, Ga. She holds a Master's Degree in<br />

Public <strong>Health</strong> from the School <strong>of</strong> Pub-<br />

lic <strong>Health</strong> in <strong>Chapel</strong> <strong>Hill</strong>.<br />

According ot Brown, Mrs. Snyder will<br />

serve as a Program Specialist for the<br />

Council on Aging. She will work with<br />

St<strong>at</strong>e agencies, schools, and other or-<br />

ganiz<strong>at</strong>ions across the St<strong>at</strong>e to further<br />

the Council's program <strong>of</strong> bringing a<br />

richer life to the St<strong>at</strong>e's older citizens.<br />

New <strong>Health</strong> Manpower Program<br />

HEW and Labor Department <strong>of</strong>ficials<br />

are busy putting the finishing touches<br />

to a major new health manpower pro-<br />

gram. Purpose <strong>of</strong> the project, to be<br />

announced soon, is to <strong>at</strong>tract former<br />

Gl's into the civilian health field. About<br />

65,000 servicemen who learned health<br />

care skills in the service are discharged<br />

every year. Most go into other fields.<br />

As the serviceman is processed<br />

through a military separ<strong>at</strong>ion center, on<br />

his way back to civilian life, he will be<br />

asked to fill out a card listing his home<br />

address and his specialized training.<br />

Cards indic<strong>at</strong>ing health skills will be<br />

turned over to hometown employment<br />

<strong>of</strong>fices. Within three or four days, em-<br />

ployment counselors will call on the<br />

veterans, to explain local opportunities<br />

for work in the health field. HEW be-<br />

lieves th<strong>at</strong> these ex-servicemen can fill<br />

a variety <strong>of</strong> jobs in hospital emergency<br />

rooms, on rescue squads, and in doc-<br />

tors' <strong>of</strong>fices. HEW has asked the Ameri-<br />

can Hospital Associ<strong>at</strong>ion to enlist the<br />

cooper<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> its members in providing<br />

lists <strong>of</strong> jobs and training programs<br />

to employment <strong>of</strong>fices. AMA has been<br />

asked to help spread the word through<br />

medical societies.<br />
