<strong>The</strong> infant mortality this year was 66.4 per 1,000 live births. This is so far the best record the st<strong>at</strong>e has ever made. Expenditures for this year for ail purposes by the Board were $315,276, <strong>of</strong> which $262,438 represented appropri<strong>at</strong>ions. This amount was just a little more than half the total expenditures made by the Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong> for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1930. 1933. <strong>The</strong> event <strong>of</strong> outstanding importance to the Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong> this year was the de<strong>at</strong>h <strong>of</strong> Dr. C. A. Shore, which occurred on February 10. A few weeks after the de<strong>at</strong>h <strong>of</strong> Doctor Shore, Dr. John H. Hamilton, director <strong>of</strong> County <strong>Health</strong> Work, <strong>of</strong> Vital St<strong>at</strong>istics, and <strong>of</strong> Epidemiology, was made di- rector <strong>of</strong> the labor<strong>at</strong>ory work. 1934. <strong>The</strong> event <strong>of</strong> gre<strong>at</strong>est importance to the St<strong>at</strong>e Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong> and to the health work throughout the st<strong>at</strong>e in this year was the de<strong>at</strong>h <strong>of</strong> Dr. James M. Parrott and the election <strong>of</strong> Dr. Carl V. Reynolds as his successor. Dr. Carl Vernon Reynolds, <strong>of</strong> Asheville, on November 10, took the o<strong>at</strong>h <strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong>fice and immedi<strong>at</strong>ely assumed his duties as Acting St<strong>at</strong>e <strong>Health</strong> Officer. 1935. At the annual meeting <strong>of</strong> the St<strong>at</strong>e Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong>, which was held in Pinehurst May 7, 1935, Dr. Reynolds was unanimously elected St<strong>at</strong>e <strong>Health</strong> Officer. 1937. On December 16, 1937, following Legisl<strong>at</strong>ive Provision in the 1937 session <strong>of</strong> the Legisl<strong>at</strong>ure, $160,000 in bonds were sold for the purpose <strong>of</strong> build- ing a new plant for the St<strong>at</strong>e Labor<strong>at</strong>ory on the grounds adjacent to the present St<strong>at</strong>e Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong> building on Caswell Square, Raleigh. <strong>The</strong> total expenditures for the St<strong>at</strong>e Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong> during the fiscal year end- ing June 30, 1937, were $881,484.01. Of this amount $287,747.04 was appro- pri<strong>at</strong>ed by the Legisl<strong>at</strong>ure. <strong>The</strong> total expenditures for the St<strong>at</strong>e Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong> for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1938, were $1,041,895.98. Of this amount $353,953.55 was appro- pri<strong>at</strong>ed by the Legisl<strong>at</strong>ure. 1939. <strong>The</strong> total expenditures for the St<strong>at</strong>e Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong> for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1939, were $1,215,056.80. Of this amount $364,506.25 was appropri<strong>at</strong>ed by the Legisl<strong>at</strong>ure. 1940. <strong>The</strong> most important item in the field <strong>of</strong> public health in this St<strong>at</strong>e in 1940 was the completion and dedic<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the central building known as the Clarence A. Shore Labor<strong>at</strong>ory <strong>of</strong> Hygiene. <strong>The</strong> circul<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the HEALTH BULLETIN increased from about 52,000 to 60,000 monthly copies during the year. <strong>The</strong> total expenditures for the St<strong>at</strong>e Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong> for the fiscal year ending June 30, 1940, were $1,380,174.90. Of this amount $370,057.67 was appro- pri<strong>at</strong>ed by the Legisl<strong>at</strong>ure. 1942. On January 1, 1942, Dr. G. M. Cooper was retired from the editorship <strong>of</strong> the St<strong>at</strong>e HEALTH BULLETIN and Dr. John H. Hamilton assumed the duties <strong>of</strong> acting editor. <strong>The</strong> total expenditures for the St<strong>at</strong>e Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong> for the year ending June 30, 1942, were $1,791,878.11. Of this amount $370,150.59 was appropri<strong>at</strong>ed by the Legisl<strong>at</strong>ure. In the autumn <strong>of</strong> this year the employees <strong>of</strong> the St<strong>at</strong>e Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong> organ- ized and established wh<strong>at</strong> is <strong>of</strong>ficially known as the <strong>North</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> Academy <strong>of</strong> Public <strong>Health</strong> <strong>at</strong> the St<strong>at</strong>e Board <strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong>.
