<strong>The</strong> August, 1963, <strong>Health</strong> Bulletin<br />
contained an article describing the first<br />
year <strong>of</strong> oper<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> the Orange-Person-<br />
Caswell-Ch<strong>at</strong>ham-Lee District <strong>Health</strong> De-<br />
partment Cervical Cancer Detection<br />
Project. This project is supported by a<br />
grant from the Cancer Control Branch<br />
<strong>of</strong> the Division <strong>of</strong> Chronic Diseases, U.<br />
S. Public <strong>Health</strong> Service, and has in-<br />
volved a cooper<strong>at</strong>ive effort by the Dis-<br />
trict <strong>Health</strong> Department, the St<strong>at</strong>e Board<br />
<strong>of</strong> <strong>Health</strong>, the P<strong>at</strong>hology Department <strong>of</strong><br />
the <strong>University</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>North</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> School<br />
<strong>of</strong> Medicine, and the priv<strong>at</strong>e practi-<br />
tioners <strong>of</strong> medicine in our five county<br />
area. <strong>The</strong> project has now been in op-<br />
er<strong>at</strong>ion over four years.<br />
Modus Operandi <strong>of</strong> Project:<br />
Orange, Person, Caswell, Ch<strong>at</strong>ham,<br />
and Lee Counties comprise an area <strong>of</strong><br />
2,205 square miles in north-central<br />
<strong>North</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> with an estim<strong>at</strong>ed 1966<br />
popul<strong>at</strong>ion <strong>of</strong> 153,122. Approxim<strong>at</strong>ely<br />
75% <strong>of</strong> the popul<strong>at</strong>ion is rural and the<br />
physician distribution ranges from one<br />
in Caswell County to 24 in Lee. Three<br />
county hospitals and <strong>North</strong> <strong>Carolina</strong> Me-<br />
morial Hospital lie within the District<br />
and Duke Medical Center is nearby.<br />
69.4% <strong>of</strong> the Papanicolaou smears<br />
performed under the project are done<br />
in the <strong>of</strong>fices <strong>of</strong> the doctors in the Dis-<br />
trict and the remaining 30.6% are per-<br />
formed in <strong>Health</strong> Department clinics<br />
(m<strong>at</strong>ernity, welfare, and general); a bi-<br />
