It's sort of a cliche to say that smaller
is better. We live hi a world hi which
resources are challenged by growth.
We have mega-stores, mega-malls,
mega-meals. We recognize that size has
many advantages, but we often yearn for
the sense of a size that does not fit all but
just fits one.
Size is always an issue in schools. Economics push schools
to be larger, but research tells us that size can have other
costs. Too large can mean that education won't address
the needs or interests of every student or that children
must compete just to participate in many activities such as
sports, the arts and extracurriculars - activities that are
not only fun and full of learning opportunities, but also
offer other ways to excel. Too small, on the other hand,
can limit the possibilities for diversity or for having the
experience of different points of view.
There is a right size, though, for the kind of schooi we
want to be. At Liggett, we want to offer our students a
host of ways to learn as well as opportunities to explore
new interests. We want to have them meet and know
different cultures and people. We want them to
participate in our musicals, to play on teams and try new
sports, to join the debate team or run for student
government. Just as important, we want our students to
be able to follow their own paths and pursue their own
questions and interests - and to have teachers and friends
enough who share these interests, which makes each path
rich and broad.
Liggett has sized itself to do all those things: To be many
and varied and yet to still cherish the sense of being one.
We are the right size to know each child by name and to
know our students well, their passions and their pains,
their roots and branches, their aspirations and their
inspirations. Teachers will notice not just how intellects are
developing, but also when a kindergartner gets a new
haircut, when a sixth grader is in a somber mood, and
when a twelfth grader is expecting a letter from a college.
Knowing each other well helps create the special bonds at
the core of community.
In our classes and on our fields we are driven by the belief
that knowing each other is the most powerful learning
tool we have. We think that with that knowledge we can
stretch ourselves to grow individually and collectively as
friends, as colleagues, as a company of learners. This gift
of size enlarges our capacity to know far beyond what our
separate abilities could achieve. Knowing each other and
sharing in that knowledge, we create a universe of
experience in a small place.
As the philosopher William James once said, "We
understand that a community stagnates without the
impulse of the individual and the impulse can die without
the sympathy of the community." We've made it our
business to ensure that the dialog between the group and
the individual is productive, enlightening and exhilarating.
Small is not a size, but a perspective. The humanity and
care that this perspective nourishes allows us to see in
each member of our community something both
incredibly special and incredibly complex.
