open a considerable leeway, but <strong>the</strong> ra<strong>the</strong>r large differences may be explained due to <strong>the</strong><br />
following facts:<br />
1. Table 6.1 contains earnings <strong>and</strong> not <strong>the</strong> value added <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> shadow economy.<br />
2. <strong>Shadow</strong> economy dem<strong>and</strong>ers are overwhelmingly households, <strong>the</strong> whole area <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />
shadow economy activities between firms (which are especially a problem in <strong>the</strong> construction<br />
<strong>and</strong> craftsmen sectors) are not considered.<br />
3. <strong>All</strong> foreign shadow economy activities achieved by foreigners (illegal immigrants) is not<br />
considered.<br />
4. The amount earned in <strong>the</strong> shadow economy, hourly wage rate <strong>and</strong> hours worked per year<br />
vary considerably.<br />
