To Bar Harbor residents Don and
Joan Allen, donating to their Hospital
is like sowing the seeds of a healthy
community. “It’s a great thing for
the Island,” said Don. “And as we’ve
gotten older, we’ve made more
frequent use of the Hospital. It’s a
Godsend to us,” said Don.
The former owners of Don’s
Shop n Save believe in supporting
the community that gave them so
much. “I made my living from the
people on this Island. I feel it’s my
duty to give back,” said Don.
The Allens feel that by donating
to the Hospital, they contribute
to their friends and neighbors.
“It’s good for the community to
have this Hospital, and we want
to help, ” said Joan.
Joan is particularly appreciative of
MDI Hospital’s uniquely personal
approach to care. “I like the warmth
of a smaller institution,” said Joan.
“I can’t say enough about it.”
Today, Don spends much of his
time maintaining the couple’s
flawless lawn and gardens; rigorous
work that recently resulted
in shoulder problems that slowed
him down. However, thanks to
care provided by MDI Hospital
Don continues to plant seeds and
watch them grow – at home and
in the community.
