For the Reverend Gary DeLong, Executive Director of the Maine Seacoast Mission, wellbeing and physical fitness go hand in hand. So after DeLong, an active man in his 60s, suffered a heart attack last December playing platform tennis, his rehabilitation at MDI Hospital helped heal both his heart and mind. Following a stay at a Bangor hospital, DeLong returned to MDI grateful that he could rehabilitate close to home. “It’s a comfort to have a hospital with that level of competence nearby,” he said. Cardiac rehab nurses Carol Zdziarski, RN and Sarah McEachern, RN worked closely with DeLong, monitoring, guiding and encouraging him. “They were good about pushing you in a way that made you comfortable. It helped me move beyond the feeling that my body had let me down and quickly build self-confidence.” He also valued the attentive, compassionate care he received. “There was a tremendous sense of small town caring. It’s a real sense of one-to-one personal attention. That’s invaluable,” said DeLong. DeLong has graduated from cardiac rehab and returned to the tennis court. “I’m playing as if I never left it,” he said. “To be able to maintain a physically active lifestyle means the world to me.” 2
Martha Abbott of Bar Harbor gets no greater joy than spending time with her granddaughter Lauren. “We sing and play in the yard. The time we spend is very important,” said Abbott. After a breast cancer diagnosis in July 2008, Abbott feared losing these precious moments. “I thought, will I be alive to see her at three years old?” But today, thanks to the Hospital’s Breast Center, Abbott looks forward to many years sharing memories with Lauren. Abbott believes that the Breast Center’s new digital mammography unit made it possible to detect the cancer early enough to treat. “I really think it made a difference,” said Abbott. Within days, Abbott had a biopsy and a lumpectomy, followed by treatment in Bangor. While the speed and expertise of care was impressive, it was the compassionate care of nurse Betty Mitchel, RN and the others at the Breast Center that touched her. “Betty was right by my side. I wouldn’t have gotten through it without her support,” said Abbott. “It meant the world to me.” Today Abbott sees a bright, cancerfree future, and she plans on spending as much of it as possible with Lauren. “I wasn’t going to have that taken from me.” 3
