The Saint Lucia Cross for his outstanding<br />

contributions in the area of medicine. The Saint<br />

Lucia Cross was awarded by her Excellency the<br />

Governor-General as Chancellor of the Order of<br />

Saint Lucia, on the Advise of the Prime Minister,<br />

the Honourable Stephenson King, of Saint<br />

Lucia. This appointment is considered one of<br />

the highest honors in Saint Lucia.<br />

School of Population Health; and <strong>Dr</strong>. Kevin Weiss, President and CEO,<br />

American Board of Medical Specialties; as well as panel presentations,<br />

poster sessions, and workshops.<br />

At the meeting, <strong>Dr</strong>s. Jeff Taekman and Melanie Wright will be presenting<br />

in a panel entitled “Techniques and Tools for Integrating Quality and<br />

Patient Safety Education across the Continuum”. Their presentation<br />

is entitled “Human Factors and Simulation: A Collaborative Model to<br />

Advance Medical Education and Patient Safety”. They will present<br />

their model of human factors and clinicians working side-by-side to<br />

improve patient safety (through research, education, and process<br />

improvement).<br />

The Barbeito family Welcomes #4!<br />

Atilio and Luz Barbeito welcomed baby boy Atilio Benjamin Barbeito on<br />

April 29, 2010. He weighed in at 3380 grams or 7 pounds, 7 ounces for<br />

everyone else. The new Atilio is actually the 4th child and also Atilio IV.<br />

Baby and mom and dad and the rest of the family are doing muy bien.<br />

Participants in the Duke Preceptorship will spend three days in the regional<br />

block area, operating rooms and on the floor with post surgery patients observing<br />

ultrasound guided single shot nerve blocks and catheter techniques in a<br />

wide variety of clinical scenarios. They will learn how to set up the block area<br />

for maximum efficiency in the OR environment, improve their decision making<br />

ability and make choices in the performance of regional anesthesia. A oneon-one<br />

discussion with the Duke Faculty member reviewing cases, scanning<br />

techniques and the image library as well as covering handout materials will<br />

augment the preceptorship experience.<br />

Participants in the Duke Intraoperative TEE Preceptorship spend one threeday<br />

session in the cardiac operating suites, observing techniques of intraoperative<br />

TEE and interpretation of images. Preceptors will participate in active<br />

discussions with cardiothoracic anesthesia faculty and fellows, and learn the<br />

basic TEE exam. They will also learn how to troubleshoot difficult cases and<br />

enhance their decision-making skills in the operating room. Cases will be<br />

reviewed with fellows and faculty and images from pathology libraries will be<br />

used to augment the preceptorship experience.<br />
