Family Hosts Golf Outing for Forbes Hospice
When Tim Whelan lost his year-and-a-half long battle with
cancer, his family and friends wanted to do something in loving
memory of him.
As an IUP graduate and a member of the Theta Xi fraternity,
Tim would travel to Harrisburg every year for a special golf
weekend with his fellow fraternity brothers. After Tim's death,
one of his frat brothers recommended continuing the tradition
as a memorial outing.
Because Tim was an avid golfer and belonged to a league at
Grand View Golf Club in North Braddock, the stage was set for the
Tim “Muttz” Whelan Memorial Golf Outing, held this past May.
Approximately 110 golfers played 18 holes and were later joined
by another 80 people who attended the post-event dinner and
celebration, all of which honored Tim’s memory and benefited
Forbes Hospice.
According to Suzy Whelan, Tim's sister, although Tim had passed
away prior to being a patient at Forbes Hospice, she and the coordinators
of the event were so inspired by the facility and the care of the
staff after taking a tour that they felt this was the place to give the golf
outing proceeds. “Forbes Hospice is not only for the terminally ill but
for the grieving families as well,” said Suzy.
Visitor’s Entrance Lobby Reopens
The new Visitor's Entrance at
The Western Pennsylvania Hospital –
Forbes Regional Campus reopened to
visitors and staff in early July. The
entrance features a new walkway into
the facility, as well as an updated
canopy with new soffit and fascia, and
a redesigned lobby that features a new
marble tiled floor and accent walls, a
new information desk area and direct
access to the visitor's elevators.
The new lobby is part of the
Hospital’s Redefining Community
Medicine growth and expansion
project. The single largest construction
project in the Hospital’s history, the
two-year, $24 million campaign
involves renovation of 80,000 square
feet of existing space and an addition
in front of the Hospital.
Forbes Health Foundation has
raised $8.4 million for these capital
improvements.
proceeds to Forbes Hospice.
The event raised more than $6,000, which will help purchase new bed chairs for patient rooms. Suzy lovingly refers to these as the
“Muttz” chairs. “While my brother was in the hospital, my family and I spent many nights sleeping in uncomfortable chairs,” said Suzy.
“We are thrilled our donation will be used to make families comfortable as they stay with their loved ones at Hospice.”
“From time to time, we receive heartfelt donations like these from families who give us money, for example, at Christmas instead of
giving each other gifts,” said Maryanne Fello, director, Forbes Hospice. “This golf outing, however, is a unique and special situation as
Tim's family and friends wanted this donation not to 'pay back,' but rather to 'pay it forward' for other families whose loved ones will
receive Hospice care.”
