Wyoming Police Department Annual Report WYPD 2002 Department Training & Firearms Training Facility Annual Summary Training Summary In 2002, members of the Wyoming Police Department logged 15,500 contact hours of training by attending over 170 classes. The department utilized its training room to host a variety of training that included: Crime Analysis, DEA Advanced Narcotics Investigators School, Forensic Mapping, Interview and Interrogation, Police Alcohol and Other Drugs, Power Phone, Public Information Officer, and Methamphetamine Awareness. Kirt Zuiderveen CERTIFIED INSTRUCTORS: The department gained new instructors in the following areas: Child Safety Seat Inspectors, Response to Bombings, Simunitions, Traffic Crash Reporting, and Use of Force. In-Service Update In-service training during 2002 included: The Bulletproof Mind Seminar as presented by Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, Hazardous Materials Update, Medic First Aid Recertification, Project Exile, Legal Update, Officer Involved Shootings, Call Reviews (Barricade Incident, Officer stabbing), Rapid Deployment Review, City Manager Update, PR-24 Recertification, Precision Driving, Handgun Qualification, AR-15 Rifle Orientation, Gang Identifiers, and Negotiation Techniques for First Responders. Members also attended various schools throughout the country that included: Advanced Criminal Street Gangs, Basic Detective, Campus Safety Conference, Dynamics of Culture, Forensic Ridgeology Course, Homicide Investigations, Hostage Rescue, Internet Child Crimes, Presentation Skills, Respecting Others, Standard Field Sobriety Testing, and Street Survival. 18 FIREARMS TRAINING • The Firearms Training Unit conducted annual qualifications with handgun, patrol rifle, and shotgun on the new training courses. • The training staff developed a plan to train every member of the Patrol Division quarterly in the firearms training simulator. • The annual handgun qualification was moved to the inservice area of training this year to allow more time to train on the various techniques. The department was also given an orientation to the AR-15 patrol rifle at the same time. • Law enforcement agencies that trained at the facility included: Michigan State Police Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms Grandville Police Department Grand Valley State University Kentwood Police Department Drug Enforcement Administration
Wyoming Police Department Annual Report WYPD 2002 K9 Unit Staffing Data DIVISION COMMANDER: Capt. John Lind Jr. UNIT COMMANDER: Lt. Kip Snyder K9 UNIT Annual Summary • During 2002 the WYPD K-9 Teams responded to 381 calls for service. • The K9 Team was directly responsible for the arrest of 33 suspects, the recovery of 2,146 grams of marijuana, 161 grams of cocaine, two guns, one explosive device and $250 in cash. • The WYPD K-9's are most often called to assist with narcotic complaints, followed by B&E's, robbery, alarms and traffic related activities. • The K9 Unit conducted: Clear Building 45 Drug Searches 178 Set Perimeters 11 Tracks Run 144 AWARDS: • Officer Adams was nationally certified Level II trainer through the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA). • Officer Bylsma placed 8th at PD 1 USPCA trials. “In 2002, Chica was activated as the first WYPD explosive detection dog.” K9 TEAMS: Officer / K9 Activations_________ Ofc.
