50 th Anniversary, large Bronze Medal, 1921, signed
AM (Alphonse Mauqouy), female bust left holding
cornucopia, symbols of maritime industry in
background, rev farmer ploughing with two horses,
legend below, 90mm. Extremely fine with attractive
light brown patina, rare. £50-70
Whilst the attribution to Alfons Mauquoy seems without
doubt, the medal is not listed in the medallist’s catalogue
raisonée. The Danish Farmer’s Bank was founded by
Hartvig Abrahamsson Gedalia, a saddle maker who traded
bonds and shares as a sideline. By 1910 it had become the
largest bank in Scandinavia. But only a year after this
medal was struck the post-World War I economic crisis
pushed the bank to near-failure from which the state was
forced to bail it out.
