Specific gaps and barriers<br />

Most participants perceived barriers and/or gaps for Rainbow service users when accessing<br />

services. The majority of this group indicated that training of clinicians/health professionals is the<br />

greatest gap. A lack of specific services and systems or pathways for Rainbow service providers<br />

and/or service users was also a common gap that was identified. The greatest barrier to service<br />

users receiving effective services identified by participants was the fear of being judged or<br />

discriminated against by the clinician/health professional.<br />

Gaps:<br />

Main specific gaps identified by service providers by 41 participants were:<br />

• A general lack of training in working with Rainbow service users, or lack of awareness or<br />

knowledge of specific Rainbow issues (13)<br />

• No specific or targeted Rainbow clinical services and/or community Rainbow services to<br />

refer to (6)<br />

• No training on trans specific issues or needs (5)<br />

• No systems or care pathway for Rainbow service users (4)<br />

• Lack of skilled service providers, or lack of engagement skills by service providers (5)<br />

• Don’t know (7)<br />

• Lack of Rainbow support groups or social groups (3)<br />

• Invisibility of Rainbow service providers and/or service users (6)<br />

• Generic difficulties accessing services (3)<br />

• Lack of acknowledgement of Rainbow identity and not asking <strong>about</strong> S.O. or G.I. (3)<br />

Other comments included:<br />

• short GP consult time;<br />

• no clinical discussions of Rainbow issues;<br />

• lack of awareness of Rainbow specific services that are available;<br />

• lack of coordination between services;<br />

• a need for de-homophobia training;<br />

• fear of confidentiality being breached;<br />

• lack of inclusion of whanau/family;<br />

• a lack of invitation (to discuss S.O and G.I identity).<br />
