people who choose to physically transition. This national resource was published online in August
2011, based on the 2001 international standards of care. The 2011 revised standards of care
Martell, C.R., Botzer M., Williams, M., Yoshimoto, D., (2003) A Literature Review & Resource Guide
for Evidence Based Best and Promising Mental Health Practices: Gay, Lesbian, Transgender and
Bisexual Individuals The Washington Institute for Mental Illness Research and Training, Washington
State University Spokane
Summary
The section on Gay, Lesbian, Transgender and Bisexual Individuals is part of the larger document
which attempts to address the needs of populations that are particularly vulnerable and in need
of evidence based best and promising mental health practices. This document gives an overview
of specific therapies and approaches which have been found to be successful when working with
LGBT people.
The specific approaches critiqued for LGBT people are:
LGBT-Affirmative/Feminist Therapies, Community Reinforcement Approach, Cognitive-Behaviour
Therapy for Generalised Anxiety Disorder, Panic Control Treatment, Cognitive Behavioral Group
Therapy for Social Phobia, Cognitive Therapy For Depression, Interpersonal Therapy for Depression,
Brief Dynamic Psychotherapy for Depression, Group Counselling Theory, Ingersoll Gender Center,
TalkSafe, Seeking Safety and other Resources on Transgender Issues.
Although the document mainly focuses on specific therapeutic modalities, and this is not the focus
of the project, it provides some excellent general recommendations for working with LGBT people
which can be incorporated in the best practice guidelines. It would also be an excellent resource to
refer to.
