• Half of the participants felt experienced working with Rainbow service users; with the large<br />
majority of these being service providers who identify as Rainbow themselves<br />
• No-one from NGO mental health services felt very experienced working with Rainbow<br />
consumers, and rated their teams understanding/awareness of Rainbow issues as poor (7)<br />
or moderate (1); and issues around workforce skills were identified. Similarly other service<br />
types identified a training need for CSW’s on Rainbow awareness<br />
• The most common mental health and addictions issues/problems identified were addiction<br />
problems; homophobia/transphobia, family issues, discrimination; depression; problems<br />
with ‘coming out’; self harm; identity issues; risky <strong>sex</strong>ual activity or <strong>sex</strong>ual health problems;<br />
and anxiety<br />
• There are significant cultural issues for service providers and service users around their<br />
own cultural practices and religious beliefs<br />
• About a third of service providers indicated that ‘informal matching’ of Rainbow service<br />
providers with Rainbow service users occurred/could occur in their service as required<br />
• A small number of Rainbow specific roles exist, but these are mainly within addiction<br />
services<br />
• Many participants indicated they would like trans awareness training, as they had limited<br />
understanding of trans and trans issues<br />
• Most participants (83%) have never undertaken any diversity training; with all but one<br />
participant indicating they would be willing to take part in this training in the future.<br />
• Very little training is available, and is generally provided by clinicians/health professionals<br />
in a short session (half day)<br />
