the Argentine Federation of Cardiology (FAC)
The Argentine Federation of Cardiology (FAC) is a scientific
institution comprised of 37 cardiology organizations and
11 delegations from the Republic of Argentina and currently
reaches more than 6’000 members. Its mission is to
promote the harmonious and integrated development of
Argentine cardiology to promote cardiovascular health.
The FAC was founded in 1965 by a group of prominent
cardiologists from the following Argentine northeast
provinces representing the six cardiology organizations
existing at the time: Córdoba, Rosario, Mendoza, San
Juan, Tucumán and La Plata. A Society of Societies was
formed, structured as a federation, in which every federate
society kept their autonomy and independence, with equal
representation and decision among the Federal National
Council, its leadership body.
Its first president and "alma mater" was Prof, Dr, Ricardo
Podio from Cordoba, who was then succeeded by members
of the Society of Cardiology from Rosario, Mendoza,
Córdoba, La Plata, Tucumán, Salta, Buenos Aires and
Neuquén. In over 40 years, the organization has carried out
intensive work to accomplish its goals in the development
and progress of cardiology throughout the country. Since
its foundation, many prestigious scientists such as Dr. René
Favaloro and others, have joined FAC, thus contributing
to its mission.
Currently FAC has a total of 22 scientific committees with
subspecialties devoted to research and scientific output.
It publishes a hierarchical Scientific Magazine, in which
prestigious national and foreign authors contribute. Through
its educational programmes, it develops regular activity
focusing on immediate postgraduate education.

In this field, FAC has signed several arrangements
with different universities and ministers of health across
the country, in order to develop a proper process of
specialty certification.
Annually, FAC organizes the National Cardiology Congress
in different provinces, through a predefined rotation system,
and the mentioned congress has become one of the most
important cardiology events. The next FAC Congress will
take place in May 2009, and the usual attendance is about
to 7’000 cardiologists, technicians and nurses.
Its Center for Teleinformática (CETIFAC) was established in
1995 to develop communication between different federate
societies, as well as with several cardiologic centers from
abroad. Its achievements include the 5th Congress of Virtual
Cardiology, a pioneer activity on the Internet. It also works
closely with the CARDIO Foundation dealing with subjects
related to the prevention of cardiovascular diseases and
health education in the community.
Recognized in several worldwide scientific fora, with many
of its members participating in international scientific
meetings, FAC continues working in pursuit of a range
of goals and always under the ideals set by its founders.
