In 1881, at the age of 18 years, he emigrated with his parents and siblings to the U.S.A. and settled on a farm in
Des Moines Township, Murray County, MN, about four miles south and one mile west of Westbrook, MN.
Jacob purchased his first farm of 40 acres in 1886, for $250. It was located about 3 miles west of the original
farm, and Avoca, (MN) was the nearest village and their mailing address. He built a little house (12'x2O') of
single board siding and 'clayed' it up. On 25 October 1886, at the age of 23, he married Mathilda Ewy, age 17.
Preacher Daniel Brubacher of Butterfield, (MN), came to marry them in the school house at 11a.m.
In the next ten years they had three children: Edward, Henry and Sidonia. During that time they purchased 40
more acres at $12 per acre, and other 4o acres at $5.50 per acre. They owned two teams of horses and four cows.
On 24 June 1895, Mathilda died, and nine months later on 15 March 1896, Jacob married Emelia Kintzi (age 18).
She lived on a farm near St. James, (MN), about 55 miles away. There was no courtship, but Jacob knew of her
and made contact by corresponding with her Parents.
Jacob purchased 160 more acres of land for $4,000. His total acreage then was 280 acres. In 1901 Jacob built a
large barn still in use at this writing. In 1905 the house was built with rocks brought in from the fields, then set in
concrete to form the basement walls.
Seven children were born to this second marriage. One daughter, Cecelia, their first born, died in infancy. A
niece, Florence, Sadie and Martin Rupp's daughter, came to live with Jacob's family when her mother became ill.
A few years after Sadie died, Florence was legally adopted by Jacob and Emelia.
In 1900, the Town of Westbrook was platted and the building of businesses and residences began. It was nine
miles away but grew: little faster than neighboring towns, as it was a progressive village, it became the prime
center for Jacob's business and shopping needs. In 1914 Jacob retired and his family moved to Westbrook, He
bought a large home on a 4 acre plot on the north edge of the village. A prime consideration for this move was to
give his children an opportunity for a high school education. In this new location, Jacob built out buildings,
planted an orchard, and raised bountiful gardens of flowers and vegetables. He also increased his herd of milk
cows and built a small business of bottling and delivering milk to local inhabitants.
For Jacob and Emelia, it was a rather ideal life and they enjoyed many happy years in their Westbrook home.
They were largely self sufficient as milk, cream, butter, cheese, eggs, chickens, ducks, geese, bees and much more
were right at hand. His Silver Spangled Hamburg chickens consistently took first prize at county fairs, and he sold
many of their eggs for $1.00 each! Their home was always busy with their children, grandchildren and other
relatives spending many happy hours with them.
Very unexpectedly, on 12 April 1938, Emelia died of a heart ailment. Jacob was taken ill with pneumonia after a
hard day's work splitting firewood, and died 18 September 1942, at the age of 79. He had written his own
obituary, and in his own words he "has transferred his citizenship and became a citizen of Heaven." Their final
resting place on Earth is the Westbrook cemetery located on the north east boundary of that village (now the City
of Westbrook, MN).

Katharine Grein 24 Jan 1899. She was born 16 Nov 1878, and died 05 Dec 1922 in Spokane, WA, USA.

The Cheney Independent, Cheney, Washington, Friday, Dec. 31, 1926.
Gustaf Ewy a resident of Cheney for many years,, passed away very suddenly yesterday afternoon from an acute
heart attack.
Mr. Ewy had been ailing for some time, although not considered serious. He had complained of pain in the chest
and had been sitting in a chair and upon rising to his feet, fell forward expiring before medical aid arrived. Three
sons, Otto, Arthus and Ed and five daughter, Ella, Lydia, Alice, Hilda and Dorothy survive Mr. Ewy, the wife and
mother having passed away about four years ago.
