…why it is better to have a demanding job?
While it might seem nice to have a stress free job, it can kill you in a variety
of ways. Your heart rate is more likely to remain constant throughout the
day. That might sound like a good thing but it means that when your heart
is called on to actually work harder, say while exercising, it won’t be able
to do its job as well and puts you at a much higher risk of a heart attack.
It also means you’re at higher risk of workplace accidents, as your brain
goes into ‘standby mode’, meaning it takes longer to react for example
to stapling your own hand.
…what basic aspects of work harm
your health?
The very act of sitting is bad for you.
Even if you spend a lot of time at the
gym, sitting for the rest of the day
means you are still at a higher risk of
heart disease and cancer than someone
who stands on the job, because
you put no strain on your body. According
to studies, people who sit at
their jobs have increased blood pressure
and blood sugar, purely from the
act of sitting.
…how large a presence women have
in the workforce exactly?
Research is done annually, and statistics
from the last few years say that
about 63% of all women around the
globe work at least part time, and 54%
of all women work full time. According
to a 2004 AFL-CIO survey of working
women, 62% report earning half or
more of their family’s income and it
seems 77% of all mothers with school
age children (6-17) go to work.
…about the history of ‘Take Your
Child to Work Day’?
Though not a thing in Hungary, ‘Take
Your Child to Work Day’ is the fourth
Thursday in April. It started in 1993, and
the original event was called ‘Take Your
Daughter to Work Day’. It was established
to offer teenage girls exposure
to career options and to help build their
self-confidence. By the year 2000, over
25 million children participated in the
event.
First Steps
Did
you
know...
…that people work more and
more in their spare time?
According to a recent study, thanks
to advancements in telecommunication,
e.g. smart phones, people are
also working in their personal time. It
became easier to reach employees,
and an estimated 74% of them are
even bothered on their off days. Men
are more willing to do so though, with
63% of them working from home,
while ‘only’ 57% of women are willing
to sacrifice their free time.
