40 Gastro Guide The Gastro Diplomat Just a stone’s throw away from Andrássy utca hides Pesti Mese offering the most divine Hungarian cuisine in town. The recently opened restaurant welcomes those visitors who are eager to try the local’s favorites and those locals who are willing to try Hungarian dishes with a surprising twist. We went to see (and hear) the Tale of Pest for ourselves. Having entered Pesti Mese, you have a feeling that you might have opened the door of the past. The rustic furnishing here and there recalls paintings of the previous centuries – exactly how the owners intended. The restaurant is named after a classic black and white Hungarian movie, Tale of Pest starring Ida Turay, Gyula Kabos and Antal Páger. In the two-storied venue, the brick walls are excitingly left unplastered and are only covered with a safety wire-netting. Take a minute and size up the stylish combination of dark-brown leather chairs, chestnutbrown tables and sizeable ceiling fans. Some cheeky jazz music is also playing in the background which defi nitely sets your mood and appetite. We kick off our lunch with delicious soups. The meat soup is so rich in meat and vegetables that the spoon stands up in it. The taste immensely recalls in us the fascinating atmosphere of a countryside wedding where meat soup is indispensible. As I’m an adventurous soup-person, I usually go for the one-off kinds when dining out. This time, I chose warm apricot soup with lavender seeds. Believe me, it’s a piece of heaven in every sense! The silky texture is excellent – neither too BUDAPEST FUNZINE by Eszter Kántor Tasteful Tale of Pest thick nor too runny, and it’s not too sweet either. The perfect apricot color is a tinder for your taste buds. As we got the chance to talk with the one of the chefs at Pesti Mese, we learned how to awake the fl avor and smell of lavender seeds. The secret additive is a bit of cognac but ssh! Besides the soups, all the starters sound very promising, too. The pecu- liarity of the place is that it’s no holds barred; perfect whether you want to have an intimate date, a couple of drinks with mates, or just a quick lunch on a Tuesday. If you are having dinner with your loved one, choose from the mains and desserts but in case you are out to have a catch-up with friends, order a baguette with goose-liver, goat cheese and celery, or a hot panini with ham and apple to tame your appetite. Additionally, you might even catch the performance of a promising musician in the evenings as the owners enthusiastically support musical talents. Good news that Pesti Mese also has a weekly changing lunch menu for those who don’t have much time on their hands around lunchtime (only 850 HUF). Pop in for an express yet delicious culinary journey on those long workdays, you won’t be disappointed. Continuing our lunch, we browsed among the mains and hesitated for long minutes. It’s such a shame that it’s highly likely that we cannot eat ourselves through the whole menu ...the cutting-edge of Hungarian cuisine á la Pesti Mese.” in one sitting. After a bit of humming and hawing, my companion voted for rosé duck breasts with hot blackberry sauce and walnut pancakes as garnish. My choice was rosé medallions of pork fi llet in walnut sauce on the side of rosemary steak fries with grilled mozzarella on top. The mains are served in a rather unconventional way. The sizeable plates have an eightshaped curve so you have the meat on one side and the garnish on the other. Very chic, we think. What’s more, Pesti Mese is not the big-plate-with-smallportion-in-the-middle kind of place so you’ll be well full at the end of your meal. Thinking that our lunch cannot
get any better after the tasty soups, we happily start our mains. And just how wrong we were! The pork fi llets dipped in walnut sauce are beyond perfection together with the crispy grilled cheese and potato fries. Who would think of serving duck breasts with sweet pancakes? Well, this is the cutting-edge of Hungarian cuisine á la Pesti Mese. To fi nish off our already palatable lunch, we order two of the classic Hungarian desserts – Dobos cakes and ‘túrógombóc’ (Cottage cheese dumplings). Only at Pesti Mese, the traditional Dobos cake is served in small rounds so they look like a whole cake. The famous FROM THE MENU SOUPS & STARTERS: • Goulash soup • Eggplant, ‘lecsó’ and Liptauer cream with crispy baguette MAINS: • Sirloin steak with fried onions • Beef stew with red-wine and noodles DESSERTS: • Small Dobos cakes • Cottage cheese dumplings cottage-cheese dumplings are served with warm vanilla cream and again, the sweetness is just right. Of course, we complimented the chef at the end and quickly jotted down the luscious walnut sauce’s recipe. And what is a great meal without matching drinks? Try a shot of Gusto pálinka or have a glass of crispy white wine with your main course. All in all, the restaurant is already known for its excellent kitchen and service. Here you can experience the authentic fl avors of Hungarian cuisine and yet you won’t be spending big sums of money. So if you want to have a great time in a pleasant environment whilst enjoying fl avorsome Hungarian meals, book a table and fi nd out more about the Tale of Pest.
