A book is like a garden
carried in the pocket.
An office is a complex environment, and there are tons
of books on them. From self-help books, through lifestyle
guides, to how-to manuals, you can pretty much
find anything. We’ll try and showcase some suggested
reading from all of this, and throw in a dash of fiction
as well, for good measure.
Being your own boss is great, or at least it must be, but most of us deal with
having superiors, and at times it is diffi cult to handle them. Tame Your Terrible
Offi ce Tyrant by Lynn Taylor helps you do just that. More than a catchy title, it
is more in depth then you’d think, containing tons of interviews with workers,
managers and psychologists, anecdotes aplenty, while at the same time aptly
describing the common traits of bosses and toddlers, in a hilarious fashion.
There are 20 chapter traits in all, such as ‘Bratty’ and the ‘Little Lost Lamb’,
with helpful tips for each.
But if you’re your own boss or just content with whoever is, you might be looking
for some light reading. Remember all those funny things you heard around
the water cooler throughout your working years? Yeah, neither do we. All the
times you said ‘I should write this stuff down’ but never did? Well someone
actually did it for you, and it’s been compiled by S. Morgan Friedman into
Overheard in the Offi ce, 240 pages of dirty, personal, inappropriate, bizarre,
shocking, and insane real life conversations from all around the world.
Speaking of inappropriate and bizarre offi ce experiences. There is no offi ce
more awkward than that created by comedic geniuses Ricky Gervais and
Steve Merchant. You might know the Steve Carel version, but that still counts.
For a great inside look at the series and fi lmmaking in general, you need to get
your hands on The Offi ce: The Scripts, which is all the original scripts from the
multiple award winning series’ fi rst season, with extra content such as original
emails between Brent and the TV company, as well as a lot of color pictures
and music for some of Brent’s songs in the show. You really must listen to
David Brent’s ‘Freelove Freeway’.
Since we spend enormous amounts of time at work there is a very real possibility
that that will be where we develop relationships. This is pretty much like
walking onto a minefi eld blind and you’re going to need all the help you can
get. There is a fair amount of material you can look to, but we suggest Finding
Love from 9 to 5 as it is a fairly recent foray into the topic, with multiple
authors of both sexes (Jane Merrill and David Knox Jr.), presenting a possibly
more rounded picture than say the magazines on the stands and their 10 step
programs.
