global challenge with successful developments,
efficient production and worldwide marketing
of our high-tech medical products and
product systems.
True to the slogan "good's good, but better's
better", we will be putting all our efforts into the
new business year working together as a united
team with a common goal.
Along with our marketing partners and our customers
throughout the world, we have set our
sights on even greater success in 2010.
With our customer-oriented policy and total personal
commitment, we worked hard in 2009 to
make sure that the order books remained full.
We would like to thank all the team members of
the large Wolf family and all our marketing
partners throughout the world for making this
possible.
In 2010, we will once again be facing consi -
derable challenges. To continue to generate
growth and to achieve our declared aims, we
need full commitment from everyone involved
whatever their role.
But with team spirit and active product, customer
and marketing partner orientation, we will
once again achieve the goals set for this year.
We wish you all the best for another successful
US surgeons trained in new techniques
Spine Training Course held in Chicago
On November 6th and 7th, fourteen
surgeons from around the United States
gathered in Chicago to be trained in new
spine techniques by Dr. Sebastian
Ruetten and an international team of
instructors. The two day course was held
at the Spine Education and Research
Dr. Ruetten and spine surgeons from the United States
Center at the North American Spine
Society headquarters and was sponsored
by RWMIC with close cooperation from
Richard Wolf GmbH. The course featured
lectures, demonstrations and hands-on
training by Dr. Ruetten, Dr. Martin Komp,
Dr. Verapan Kuansongtham, Dr. Sompoch
Paiboonsirijit and Dirk Goethel.
One of the techniques taught during the
workshop was the interlaminar approach
for endoscopic discectomy. This technique
employs the same posterior ap -
proach as is used in open lumbar discectomies
and microdiscectomies, which
account for about 350,000 procedures
every year in the United States. This technique
has the potential to become widely
adopted by US surgeons because of its
very minimally invasive nature and the
familiarity of the posterior approach.
Success Gynecology Symposium
at Liestal Canton Hospital
The first Swiss Gynecology Symposium
"Laparoscopic Hysterectomy and Hyste -
roscopic Resectoscope" was held at the
Liestal Canton Hospital on 26 November
2009 and chaired by Dr. med. Nicole
Bürki. Treier Endoscopie AG launched this
event with professional and academic support
from leading speakers.
The very varied agenda for the day included
specialist presentations on atypical
uterine bleeding, indications for surgical
therapy, hysteroscopic endometrium re sec -
tion, biopolar resectoscopy and laparoscopic
separation of the Uterus Bi-Clamp,
hemostasis, and adhesion prophylaxis, as
well as information on the systems Re -
section Master and Morce Power Plus.
Other highlights included the two live operations
in full HD quality and two workshops
with organic dissections.
The speakers and tutors were Dr. med.
Nicole Bürki, Chief Physician at the Gyne -
cology Clinic, Liestal Canton Hos pi tal,
Dr. med. Markus Eberhard, Chief Phy si cian
at the Gynecology Clinic, Canton Hos pital
Schaffhausen, Professor Dr. med. Michel
Müller, Chief Physician at the Gynecology
Clinic Inselspital Bern and Dr. med. Dimitri
Sarlos, Chief Physican at the Gynecology
Clinic, Canton Hospital Aarau.
The participants from industry included
Treier Endoscopie AG, Beromünster,
Nycomed Pharma AG, Dübendorf, ERBE
Suisse AG, Winterthur, IVF Hart mann AG,
Neuhausen am Rheinfall and Covidien
Switzerland Ltd., Wollerau.
At the start of the symposium, the delegates
followed the live operations involving
laparoscopic hysterectomy with morecellation.
Dr. med. Markus Eberhard carried out
the intervention and demonstrated the
advantages of the technique with the Morce
Power Plus system. The second operation
with Professor Dr. med. Michel Müller relating
to endometrium resection with chip
evacuation was carried out with the
Knowledge Transfer
Similarly, the endoscopic anterior cervical
discectomy, also featured at the workshop,
is expected to be adopted by many
surgeons in the United States as a minimally
invasive alternative to open anterior
discectomies.
This endoscopic spine training course
represented the first time many of these
techniques, including the cervical and
interlaminar approaches, have been
taught in the United States. The surgeons
invited to attend the training were very
enthusiastic about the new techniques
and many have already begun incorporating
them in their practice. It is expected
that many of the surgeons who attended
this course will become instructors
for future RWMIC courses on these techniques
in the United States.
Thomas Kienzle
Resection Master system. The latest technique
ensured there was a lively exchange of
information between the two surgeons and
the audience. The delegates then practiced
the different work stages independently or
with inputs from the speakers. All six workshop
workstations were provided with animal
dissections. The bilateral discussions
and interactive exchange of experience between
delegates, tutors and industry are
very important and always well regarded.
The first Swiss Gynecology Symposium in
Liestal was brought to a successful finish
with a drinks reception.
"2 ND INTERNATIONAL core SALES TRAINING"
In view of the investment budget for new
ORs, hospital decision makers are faced
with the question of the need for and
requirements of the "new" OR. The need
for new concepts to provide better patient
Participants at the second International core Sales Training
care and more ergonomic working conditions
in the OR is high. More economically
efficient working methods in the OR are
also included in the planning. These concepts
need to be revised constantly to
meet the requirements of hospital deci -
sion makers. This makes suitable training
of our agencies an absolute must.
This was the thinking behind the second
successive "INTERNATIONAL core SALES
TRAINING" organized by the core department
in the Prima Vista Richard Wolf
Academy. During the period from No vem -
ber 02 - 06 2009 the "core" integrated
The new WOLF Training Center in Berlin has
meanwhile become fully operational. Why
was Berlin selected as the location? Berlin is
the capital city of Germany, a major medical
center, and a hub for international meetings
and know-how transfer in the medical hightech
sector of our target clientele. Berlin is an
ideal location for the presentation, promotion
and profiling of instrument maker Richard
Wolf to its national and European customer
base, and to international customers and
OR was centre stage. With more than 25
participants, we were pleased to wel -
come agencies of Richard Wolf GmbH
from Egypt, Belgium, Chile, Denmark,
Greece, India, Iran, Korea, Lithuania, Le -
banon, Norway, Poland, Russia, Spain,
UAE and Belarus in our centre. The participants
were greeted by Prof. Dr. Jörg-Uwe
Meyer, Timo Haller and Etem Ihtiyar.
Following this, our agencies presented
their current market situations and as -
sess ments.
Stefan Bremer then provided us with an
overview of the latest system components
from Dräger Medical. Etem Ihtiyar
(project manager) and Jürgen Fischer
(multimedia) discussed the available
solutions of audio-video routing and telesurgery
and presented an overview of the
basic information required by the participants.
Apart from the topic of "central
device management" presented in detail
by Timo Haller (head of the core department),
a further major topic was the
new core.docu documentation system.
core.docu is HD-compliant and will re -
place the current documentation sys tem.
Dennis Schlevoigt and Peter Rosiepen
from the Visus company responsible for
the development of the core.docu system
tailored to our needs were present and
took over this part of the training.
partners. The new training center has given
us an excellent launch pad for the future.
Our goals are as follows:
• Modern, advanced and representative
branch office for instrument make Richard
Wolf
• Meeting point / personal contact venue for
national/international customers or partners
for business meetings and product
presentations
The current video standards and trends
were outlined for the participants by
Bernd Jotzat (product manager for visualisation).
One important aspect of contract
negotiations is after-sales support –
effectively service. Bernd Ruf (head of the
service department) provided us with an
outline of the essentials. The available
print and digital media intended to support
the agencies in their sales and marketing
activities were presented by Axel
Keller (core marketing). The five-day program
was completed by workshops that
provided us with useful information for
future planning and strategy.
The feedback from the participants at the
2 ND INTERNATIONAL core SALES TRAINING
was very positive. Further training courses
are planned for 2010. One of these is the
"2 ND NATIONAL core SALES TRAINING" in
the Prima Vista Richard Wolf Academy
from March 22 - 26 2010 for the training
of our German-speaking agencies and
medical products consultants and product
specialists in the field. During the period
from August 23 - 27 2010 we are also
holding our "1 ST INTERNATIONAL core
SALES TRAINING FOR TECHNICIANS"
intended for the technicians of our agencies.
The skills learnt during training are
intended to optimise and simplify procedures
during installa tion. Axel Keller
• In-house training facilities (training courses
for employees and customers)
• Satellite events for conferences and symposia
in Berlin – technical (medical) – cultural
(private views, art evenings, small
events, etc.)
• Dedicated organized specialist events with
"decision-makers" ("Berliner Runde...")
• Workshops
With the core OR concept, Richard Wolf – one of the great innovators in minimally invasive
surgery – integrates a variety of technologies in the OR of the future.
Coordinating the workflow is much easier with the central device management that can be
controlled and monitored either by touch screen or voice. The patient-related documentation
required for the intervention is available from the image archive and data management
and, when necessary, integrated video management allows colleagues to be consulted
using video conferencing. This communications option is also very useful for basic teaching
and advanced training.
The integrated core OR concept core stands for improved ergonomics and greater efficiency
both within and beyond the OR.
Arab Health grows and grows
Arab Health 2010 in Dubai
As one of the world’s biggest exhibitions for
medical technology and hospital supplies,
the Arab Health exhibition again opened its
doors in Dubai from 25 to 28 January
2010. Since the exhibition area available in
previous years was no longer sufficient for
all the participating companies, a further
exhibition hall with an area of more than
20,000 m² was erected in front of the
entrance area of the exhibition complex. A
main road located in front of the main
entrance had to be rerouted and this was a
perfect recipe for daily traffic chaos.
Compared with the recently opened Burj
Khalifa Tower (189 floors and 828 m in
height), this was undoubtedly not such a
major challenge for the Dubai’s builders.
Another record was achieved at this year’s
Arab Health. A total of 2,600 exhibitors from
more than 70 countries represented the biggest
participation to date. This included
exhibitions presented by exhibitors from
small and mid-sized companies in a total of
29 country pavilions featuring different
countries.
Germany has set up the biggest pavilion
and this was divided into different federal
states. Our exhibition stand and the stands
of our two competitors (Storz and Olympus)
were based in the main hall. The greatest
numbers of visitors were circulating in this
area.
The customer clientele generally covers a
wide range at the Arab Health. Apart from
actual end customers – in other words
users – we recorded a large number of contacts
from the areas of hospital purchasing,
hospital management, hospital medical
technology, and naturally also a large number
of distributors who would like to work for
Richard Wolf in the future.
The most frequent urological diseases (urinary
stone conditions) typical for the region
meant that a large number of inquiries
ranged across the entire area of urology
from endoscopic interventions with lasers
through to Extracorporeal Shock Wave
Lithotripsy (ESWL) as in previous years.
However, there were also a large number of
inquiries on issues like integrated surgical
Urological Winter Forum Großhadern
24 to 29 January 2010 at Lake Tegernsee
After 2009, this was the second time that
Richard Wolf was invited by Ludwig
Maximilian University Großhadern to this
Winter Forum on Lake Tegernsee organized
under the management of its director
Professor Christian Stief. URS Workshops
were offered on two days with laser lithotripsy.
Richard Wolf provided two complete
hands-on workstations on both days
with support from Mr. Haller, Mr. Salge
and Ms Huber, as well being accompanied
by tutors from Großhadern Hospital.
However, before "hands-on" experience
started, the delegates were given a presentation
by Senior Physician Dr. Bader
from Großhadern Hospital providing information
on the indication, technique, and
tips and tricks of rigid and flexible URS.
On the second day, Dr. Sroka from the
College of Applied Sciences Munich gave
a very interesting presentation on lasers,
the generation of laser energy and the different
types of laser used in medicine.
Instead of plastic models, urinary tracts
from pigs consisting of kidneys, ureter
and bladder were used and delegates
found this approach extremely helpful.
The tutors inserted artificial stones into the
porcine urinary tracts in advance of the
presentation.
The delegates worked on the pigs enthusiastically
and used the laser and appropriate
auxiliary instruments to remove the
stones. It was also possible to use the
Mega-Pulse Laser. The delegates included
urologists in private practice and some cli-
solutions (core) and HDTV endocameras,
as well as laparoscopy and gynecology,
indicating that these areas continue to grow
in importance.
Generally speaking, the Arab Health in
Dubai enjoys a steady increase in popularity,
as evidenced by the growing number of
exhibitors and also demonstrated by the
many visitors coming from outside the Arab
world. Over the long term, Arab Health must
be regarded as the most important exhibition
in the healthcare sector. This is due not
least to the location. Dubai attracts visitors
like virtually no other exhibition site in the
world. Numerous hotels and cheap flights
to Dubai play a role in combination with the
mild climate at the end of January.
This confirms our commitment to presenting
our product range at this exhibition and we
will undoubtedly continue to be a presence
at Arab Health over the coming years.
Stefan Gillé
nicians. Wor k ing with a flexible URS was a
new experience for some of the delegates
but this did not present any problems.
Under the management of experienced
tutors from Großhadern Hospital, they
were inducted into the technique of flexible
URS and were introduced to a number
of tips and tricks for successfully removing
stones using lasers and auxiliary
instruments. Prospective customers were
also able to find out about product innovations
in urology that were presented on
the exhibition bench. The feedback from
the delegates and the tutors of Groß -
hadern Hospital was uniformly very positive
so that we have already planned the
event into our schedule for next year.
The Stereotelescope for Transanal Endo -
scopic Microsurgery (TEM) from medical
instrument manufacturer Richard Wolf
received the accolade of the iF Product
Design Award 2010 in the category
Medicine and Health Care at the end of
November 2009. The stereo telescope
launched in the marketplace in May
2009 gives the surgeon binocular vision
of the operation site in the entire rectum
and this provides the user with the graphic,
three-dimensional impression of
depth required for carrying out precise
surgery. The image can also be transferred
to an external screen in high-defini -
tion quality. The improved vision and the
three-dimensional view provided for the
surgeon means that the new product
makes a significant contribution to
patient safety.
"Outstanding illumination of the operating
area, autoclavability, avoidance of
access trauma for patients and most
importantly superb 3D vision were naturally
by far the most important criteria for
development of this surgical rectoscope.
We also asked ourselves why innovative
medical technology shouldn’t have an
attractive design as well? This award has
confirmed that we have mastered the
challenge with flying colors," the message
from the jury panel.
The annually awarded iF Product Design
Award has enjoyed a reputation as an
award granted to good design solutions
for products since 1953. An international
jury panel of designers evaluates the
quality of the design and a number of
other factors including the craftsmanship,
the level of innovation and the ergonomic
design of the product.
