In a setting where the summer has given way to torrential rains, fierce winds and temperatures heading towards the freezing point, preparations for the last Simply Seatrade edition of this year are in full swing. A year with a wide variety of ingredients and a delicious topping on the twenty-second of October: the christening ceremony of mv Baltic Klipper in the port of Zeebrugge. Anticipating for the worst, the weather gods were well inclined towards us: blue skies and a comfortable breeze enveloped the ceremony. Needless to say, reports and pictures of the inauguration of the Baltic Klipper take up an important part of this issue. Somewhat less tasty but nutritious at the same time, is the continuous need for efficiency and cost control in a demanding and only gradually improving market. We trust that these belt tightening measures will ultimately add to a flavourful future. Seatrade considers financial prudence to blend well with “development”. Our industry is constantly challenged and called on to improve service, quality and comply with the strengthening environmental regulations. From a more entrepreneurial viewpoint we have also started a “Reefer into the future” project. Development onboard our ships is found, amongst others, in the area of safety with the launch of the “SeaSafe” campaign improving safety awareness and teaching crew to judge whether a situation is safe or not. Event reporting through IT@SEA in case of an accident, incident, near miss, inspection, customer remark or suggestion for improvement, has meanwhile matured and born fruit. And lastly, the 360 Quality (cargo protecting) code is well on its way to becoming the industry standard and a quality trademark for specialised reefer shipping companies and their service providers around the world. Each chunk has contributed to a lesser or greater extent in Seatrade’s successfully passing external Lloyd’s and RINA audits early October and the resultant six flag state DOC’s (Document of Compliance). 2010 proved to be extremely challenging in the specialised reefer market. The ongoing effects of the financial crisis, and in particular unfavourable USD exchange rates, have dampened demand for imported perishables into Europe, Russia and managemenT corner Mediterranean markets. Banana exports from Ecuador, a key driver of the spot market for reefers, fell by some 6 percent during the first six months of the year, which resulted in high exit prices whilst the main trading markets in the EU, Mediterranean and Russia came under severe pressure. Sales prices dropped by 17%, 6% and 13% respectively. However, arguably the most substantial damages have been caused by high fuel prices, low squid and pelagic catches, extremely low poultry exports and weather-related reductions in the deciduous exports from Argentina and Chile. The poor rates achieved have resulted in more vessels going into lay-up and being sold for scrap. Meanwhile over 45 vessels were scrapped in the worldwide reefer fleet with a total capacity of nearly 17 million cubic feet. Despite the present depressed rate environment modern specialised reefer vessels remain a highly cost effective and efficient way to transport perishables deep-sea, and are well adapted to meet transit times and deliver quality to the consumer market. 40 percent of today’s global trade in perishables is transported in specialised reefers and 60 percent in reefer containers, despite the container mode having close to ten times the nominal capacity of the specialised mode. As reefer trades are traditionally oneway, the availability of refrigerated containers involves far more logistics management than dry containers. This will considerably reduce the potential of capacity utilization, which ultimately affects the carbon footprint. Considering the continuing and growing understanding of the need for specialised services, the development of specialised dedicated “liner” and/or “seasonal” services is imminent. Within this environment, consolidation of the commercial specialised management will be a main contributor to assure sustainable results by optimising schedules and satisfying customer needs. Let’s hope that Santa Claus brings along some snow in our part of the world and a basket of health and good fortune for staff, relations, family and friends all over the globe.
