The scrapBooK The Four mile run The eagle and The phoenix On 10 October 2010 a total of 18,500 people ran the Four Mile Run from Haren to Groningen, the biggest running event of the year in Groningen. Seatrade Groningen was represented by one company team which consisted of René Mensink, Geke Vos, Jantina Laan, Saskia Beuzel, Tienco de Vries, Co Fröhlich and William Hillenga. As a team we managed to come in 332nd of the 887 participating company teams, quite an achievement! f.l.t.r. As Capt. Popov reported: “It’s a bird with high ethics, as he brought along his own food. Presently he lives on deck No 2, p/s (leeside) and it is prohibited to disturb him. Hope he’s still alive in Philadelphia.” Due to the disappointing input we, the editors, have decide to cancel the photo contest.
iTalian summer dinner Dear Readers and Editorial Staff I am writing you in reference to Simply Seatrade’s August 2010 edition, in which I read with interest the article covering the vessel Cloudy Bay (page 24). By an amazing coincidence Cloudy Bay, discovered by Captain Cook on 7 February 1770 as mentioned in the article, was ultimately surveyed by HMS Conway in 1836. There were to be several consecutive British Admiralty Navy vessels that carried on the name of HMS Conway and in the mid 19th Century, when there was a great demand for a reliable standard of naval officers, ship owners set up an organisation to train and educate young men properly - the Mercantile Marine Service Associations (MMSA). In spite that August is a period that almost all Italians are on a holiday, Captain Scotto di Fasano and his wife, Captain Siri, Chief Engineer Scamardella, Chief Engineer Bettin, and Chief Officer Angelieri and his wife joined a nice typically Genovese dinner in a small restaurant in Genoa: Together with representatives from Enterprise, Seatrade Groningen, and Cosiarma, it was an enjoyable evening with great food and good conversations. We all agreed that we must make this a twice-yearly event, so the next dinner will be planned for April 2011. Unfortunately nobody carried a camera, so no pictures were taken. One of the first ships chosen to house the training school was a later ‘Conway’. She was a small two-decked 92-gun wooden line battle ship of 62.5m LOA and 16m beam, 4375 tons. The ‘Conway’ was already a century-old vessel having seen duties in the Crimean War and American Civil War when she was refitted at Birkenhead between 1936 and 1938. One can hardly imagine today’s ship owners keeping their vessels in shipshape for more than 100 years before a first major dry docking! HMS Conway became the most prestigious British Naval Training Vessel for both the Royal Navy and Merchant Navy. It was closed in 1974 when the British Merchant Navy basically priced itself out of the market. Of course I have to add with pride that I was a cadet on HMS Conway in 1961/1963 and ultimately this was the reason we named the Seatrade New Zealand Agency, Conway Shipping Limited!
