LAWS – Organization gets boost to promote
female athletes as tomorrow’s leaders
LAWS Trillium Thank You Luncheon, Aug.
2011, Project Coordinator Elaine Weeks reads
the plaque presented by Pam Fenchak (second
from right) of the Ontario Trillium Foundation
to founder Dr. Marge Holman (second from
left) as former MPP Sandra Pupatello looks on.
Dr. Marge Holman was awarded a
$110,000 grant provided through the Trillium
Foundation to Leadership Advancement
for Women in Sport, an organization
she helped found over ten years ago. LAWS
was created to address barriers facing girls
at the University of Windsor (see attached
photo). Jess looks forward to lecturing in the
Netherlands again in September in hopes of
further building this relationship.
Other noteworthy highlights from the
2011-2012 academic year include: being
awarded tenure at the University of Windsor,
claiming the 2012 Winter Indoor Golf
League championship with his partner, Dr.
Sarah Woodruff, and seeing his brother’s
Florida Panthers finally claw their way back
into the NHL playoffs for the first time in
more than a decade.
Adriana Duquette
The Undergraduate Laboratories are
fully functional and running smoothly (the
majority of the time!). This year saw the first
group of students complete the new laboratory
course in Motor Learning and the
Psychology of Physical Activity (Fall 2011)
and a second group of students complete
the laboratory course in Human & Exercise
Physiology (Winter 2012). The Biomechan-
and women in sport and fitness and to empower
them by sharing opportunities, resources,
right to play info, and leadership
mentoring.
Dr. Holman said the funding allowed
the organization to hire a full-time project
coordinator, Elaine Weeks, a University of
Windsor alumnus and two-time best female
athlete Banner Shield recipient. Since May
2011, Elaine has been raising the profile
of LAWS by developing promotional materials
such as a web site, www.leadingwomeninsport.com,
a Facebook group, a
Twitter presence and a Flickr photo site of
local females in sports and physical activities.
In addition, various networking and
outreach events have been held.
To ensure the sustainability of the organization,
the second year will see a greater
push to recruit volunteers who can help
develop and implement goal-based initiatives.
There will also be additional focus
on partnering with local sport and recreation
organizations. Alumni are welcome
to join LAWS and to serve on the board
of directors. For details, please go to the
LAWS website.
ics & Ergonomics laboratory course will
be offered this coming Fall. On a personal
note, Adriana is still enjoying her home in
Lasalle, although she wishes she had more
time to spend there!
Marge Holman
This year Marge made the tough decision
to officially retire in August. However,
it is expected that she will maintain her
university and community connections to
continue much of the work that does not
have academic boundaries. For example,
her project with Ontario Trillium Foundation
funding is entering its second year so
she will continue this work to ensure LAWS
- Leadership Advancement for Women in
Sport, will have an impact in the community.
She will also continue assisting with
Sandwich Secondary School’s volleyball
program for another year. More leisure
time will be a welcomed change to enjoy
neglected pleasures.
Sean Horton
The Motor Learning and Control labs
continue to flourish, with a number of
students on the verge of completing their
master’s degrees, and a number of others
working diligently ahead on their respective
projects. We said goodbye to
Chantelle Lachance, who is heading to
Simon Fraser University for her PhD. Good
luck Chantelle!
In a collaborative effort with Chad
Sutherland, Nadia Azar, and graduate students
Phillip Mckeen and Kelly Carr, we
managed to secure funding to run a program
this coming fall that will provide fitness
and motor skill training to adults with
Autism and an Intellectual Disability.
On a personal note, knee surgery over
the Christmas holidays has taken a toll on
Sean’s squash game. His surgeon has actually
recommended he give up the game,
although Sean probably isn’t smart enough
to do that. He is, however, reluctantly on
the sidelines for now.
Kenji Kenno
The Kenno family: after graduating from
the concurrent education/ECE program
at Windsor last year, Kristen completed
her Honours degree this year and may be
teaching overseas next year with her significant
other, Paul. Staci is working on her
PhD dissertation at Queen’s in Kingston
and hopes to finish in the next year or so
and find an academic position at a university
teaching managerial accounting. She
is planning on returning home later this
summer to complete her PhD writing and
be able to see her significant other, Adam,
and her dog, Sarge, on a more regular basis.
Sara is also completing her Ph.D. in
Civil Engineering at Windsor and was happily
married on New Year’s Eve to Ryan
Grondin with a reception at Ambassador
Golf course (a good time was had by all!).
Sara and Ryan have purchased a home in
LaSalle and are enjoying the challenges of
being new home owners! Claire has moved
to Queen Victoria Public School as the
school librarian and is enjoying her new
position and the challenges of being at a
