Wayne Marino
Wayne is just completing his 35th year
of teaching, research and administration
in the Faculty of Human Kinetics with no
end in sight. Although he thoroughly enjoys
his role as Department Head of Kinesiology,
the favourite parts of the day for
him are still, and will always be, in the
classroom teaching biomechanics and statistics.
He will tell you that the very best
thing about his job is seeing many of his
students go on to great success in a wide
variety of professions and Kinesiology related
careers. Wayne’s research activities
have decreased significantly over the past
few years due to administrative responsibilities
but he did manage to spend a bit of
time last summer with Dr. Blaine Hoshizaki
in the Neuro-trauma Impact Lab at the University
of Ottawa assisting with the testing
of various types of protective helmets.
Highlights of the year on the home front
were another family trip to New York for
a couple of Yankee games and two outstanding
Broadway musicals; and a quick
trip to Collingwood during Reading Week
for a couple of days of non-stop, top to
bottom skiing. For those who have seen
the pictures in his office, the 35th Annual
Hermiston-Marino fishing trip occurred in
June. Wayne, Ray Hermiston (former Dean),
and Dennis Hastings (former HK staff and
University Director of Facilities) have never
missed the trip. Other names from the past
who regularly attend are: Paul Taylor (Kinesiology
and Biology), Kenji Kenno (Kinesiology),
Peter Powell (Athletics), Earl Noble
(former HK faculty and now Director of Kinesiology
at Western) and Bert Taylor (former
Dean of Health Sciences at Western).
Tiffany Martindale
Tiffany has had an enjoyable and busy
second year as Undergraduate Coordinator.
She had the pleasure of joining our group
at the Ontario Universities Fair (Toronto) in
the fall, meeting many great prospective
students. This year we initiated the “Kin
One Program” for our first year students;
which included assigned team leaders
(upper year kinesiology students), study
support and workshops. It was a great first
run of the program and she looks forward
to more fine tuning for this September. In
addition to recruiting and advising, Tiffany
thoroughly enjoyed teaching Special
Populations in Physical Activity and Human
Performance this year. At home, the
renovations seem to be coming to an end...
finally! This allowed some free time to take
a spring vacation in Portugal with her husband,
Scott.
Scott Martyn
The 2011-2012 year has been a busy
time for Scott, both personally and professionally.
Along with the help of his wife,
Rebecca, and the constant support of their
son William, he has continued work on their
new house. William, now three, is still enjoying
his outdoor play set and spends an
ever increasing amount of time on his new
two wheel “Lightning McQueen” bike.
As the Kinesiology Graduate Coordinator,
Scott is extremely pleased to announce
that the long awaited Ph.D. Program in
Kinesiology was approved. We look forward
to launching the program in September
2013. On the conference front, Scott
and his current graduate students have
been busy presenting papers throughout
North America, Europe and Asia. Speaking
of Asia, having amassed four trips to
China this year, he continues his role as a
Distinguished Visiting Professor at Beijing
Sport University. On the publication front,
along with some exciting new initiatives,
Scott is pleased to announce the release
of his second book entitled “Tarnished
Rings: The International Olympic Committee
and the Salt Lake City Bid Scandal”
written with colleagues and published by
Syracuse University Press. With four new
graduate students this September, Scott is
looking forward to another productive, but
enjoyable, year.
Cheri McGowan
Cheri just celebrated her 3rd anniversary
in the Department of Kinesiology, and
still very much enjoys being a member of
the “HK Family”. Cheri welcomed two MHK
students (Josh Seifarth and Andrew Friesen)
and four undergraduate students from
the Departments of Kinesiology (Shane
Freeman) and Biology (Dan Brown, Sarah
19
HK
Hanik, Matt Pfaff) into her lab. They, along
with current MHK students Mike Gregory
and Mark Badrov have kept busy perfecting
research techniques, and conducting
studies in healthy and clinical (pre-hypertension,
hypertension, chronic obstructive
pulmonary disease, and/or cardiac rehabilitation)
populations. We have enjoyed
the opportunity to work closely with the
Windsor Essex Community Health Centre
and are grateful for their continued support
of our research and student volunteers.
Members of the lab celebrated the graduation
of our second MHK student (Martina),
and also travelled to the Canadian
Society of Exercise Physiology meeting to
support Mark and Mike as they presented
their research. They made the PACR Lab
very proud! Additionally, Cheri’s former
student, Cassandra, had her MHK thesis
work accepted for publication (Blood Pressure
Monitoring), while Mark published an
invited review (Critical Reviews in Physical
and Rehabilitation Medicine). Cheri continues
to collaborate with colleagues at the
University Health Network (Toronto) and
Western University (London). Cheri also
immensely enjoyed the opportunity this
Winter to teach a new course that perfectly
combined her research and teaching passions:
Chronic Disease & Exercise Rehabilitation.
On the family front, Cheri’s three
year old daughter Anne, a “long-time” fan
of the Lancer Women’s basketball team,
still wants to grow up to play basketball for
“her friend Chantal”!
