Barry Young, Managing Director, OLED Association<br />

As managing director of the OLED Association, Barry Young addresses such issues as the<br />

development of industry standards for OLED display and lighting, promotion of the<br />

technology and the resolution of industry-wide technical issues. He serves CEO of Young<br />

Mark<strong>et</strong> Research, where he produces a comprehensive report on the LED supply chain,<br />

characterizing the 100+ LED producers in terms of reactors, wafers, die capacity, yielded<br />

die and die revenue. The report featured an analysis of the MOPCVD tool makers. He is<br />

also working with a group of suppliers to establish the first US-based manufacturer for<br />

OLED lighting. Barry was a featured speaker at the16th CLSA Investors’ Forum and the<br />

World Knowledge Forum in Korea. A founder and longtime principal, senior advisor and<br />

consultant with research firm <strong>Display</strong>Search, Young is a leading authority on OLEDs and<br />

flexible displays, has visited and consulted with most OLED manufacturers around the<br />

world. Young’s work has been published in many technical journals and he has spoken<br />

extensively around the world about the display industry. Before joining <strong>Display</strong>Search, he was CEO and president<br />

of OWL <strong>Display</strong>s, where he co-developed innovative driver technology for a-Si and p-Si TFT-LCDs and was<br />

awarded key patents for driving low-temperature polysilicon TFT-LCDs. He has also served as vice president and<br />

general manager of Tandem’s integrity systems division. Young’s career also includes time as managing partner at<br />

Booz Allen & Hamilton, executive vice-president at Wells Fargo Bank, senior vice-president at Citibank, and<br />

president and CEO of Lexar, an early developer of an all-digital PBX. He has a business degree from CUNY and<br />

has performed graduate work at George Washington University.<br />

Company Summary: The OLED Association (OLED-A) provides a forum for the interchange of technical and<br />

mark<strong>et</strong> information. Our membership includes companies involved in small-molecule OLED technology and<br />

polymer technology (PLED or light-emitting polymers). OLED-A serves its membership by fostering the rapid<br />

development of OLED technology and OLED products; serving as a resource on OLED<br />

mark<strong>et</strong>s and products for media and investors; functioning as a catalyst in the development of<br />

standards for OLEDs; and providing a forum to promote and mark<strong>et</strong> OLED technology<br />

products.<br />

What do you think is the single most important factor that is currently causing the displays industry to<br />

change? The industry is trapped b<strong>et</strong>ween slow growth in TVs, Monitors and Notebooks that have traditionally<br />

driven supply and a structure that depends on the continued improvement in productivity of large area fabs, which<br />

are now in an oversupply condition. The current application growth is in smart phones and tabl<strong>et</strong>s where it takes<br />

~90 smartphones or ~20 tabl<strong>et</strong>s to use the same area as a 42-inch TV.<br />
