<strong>Disaster</strong> <strong>Risk</strong> <strong>Reduction</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong><br />

• Regional platforms for disaster risk reduction, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g m<strong>in</strong>isterial<br />

meet<strong>in</strong>gs, led by regional <strong>in</strong>ter-governmental organizations.<br />

• An Inter-Agency Group that acts as a venue for ISDR system jo<strong>in</strong>t work<br />

programm<strong>in</strong>g among <strong>the</strong> participat<strong>in</strong>g organizations (currently FAO,<br />

IFRC, ILO, OCHA, UNDP, UNEP, UNESCO, UNICEF, WFP, WHO, WMO and<br />

<strong>the</strong> World Bank) and to improve coherence thus better support<strong>in</strong>g<br />

countries <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir implementation of <strong>the</strong> HFA. Thematic platforms led<br />

by UN specialized agencies or technical <strong>in</strong>stitutions, provide knowledge<br />

products, and help to report on developments (for <strong>in</strong>stance early warn<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

recovery, education, risk identification). The Under-Secretary-General for<br />

Humanitarian Affairs also convenes a Management Oversight Board with<br />

his peers (from OCHA; UNDP represent<strong>in</strong>g UNDG; <strong>the</strong> World Bank; WMO;<br />

UNEP; and IFRC). This Board supports <strong>the</strong> Chair <strong>in</strong> provid<strong>in</strong>g UN systemwide<br />

leadership and high-level advocacy for disaster risk reduction.<br />

• Several stakeholder groups and networks associated to ISDR – among<br />

<strong>the</strong>m a Scientific Technical Committee, Global NGO Network for<br />

DRR, Gender-and-<strong>Disaster</strong>s and Media group<strong>in</strong>gs and an emerg<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Parliamentarian Network.<br />

• Member States, which participate actively <strong>in</strong> ISDR, are called upon <strong>in</strong> GA<br />

and HFA resolutions to establish multistakeholder national platforms for<br />

disaster risk reduction to facilitate coord<strong>in</strong>ation across sectors. A selforganized<br />

ISDR Support Group is an <strong>in</strong>formal body open to all States that<br />

convenes <strong>in</strong> Geneva. Frequent brief<strong>in</strong>gs <strong>in</strong> New York and <strong>in</strong>itiatives l<strong>in</strong>ked<br />

to <strong>the</strong> General Assembly (GA) and ECOSOC keep Member States abreast<br />

of developments. The Secretary-General reports every year to GA on <strong>the</strong><br />

implementation of ISDR <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Second Committee.<br />
