<strong>Disaster</strong> <strong>Risk</strong> <strong>Reduction</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong><br />

In Commitment 6 of <strong>the</strong> Brussels Programme of Action (Reduc<strong>in</strong>g<br />

vulnerability and protect<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> environment) LDCs and <strong>the</strong>ir developments<br />

partners committed to alleviate vulnerability of <strong>the</strong>se countries to natural<br />

shocks. This commitment sets out <strong>the</strong> programme’s agenda for protect<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> environment and addresses a wide range of issues related to loss of<br />

biological diversity, drought, desertification, etc.<br />

The Mauritius Strategy underscores that Small Island Develop<strong>in</strong>g States are<br />

located among <strong>the</strong> most vulnerable regions <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> world <strong>in</strong> relation to <strong>the</strong><br />

<strong>in</strong>tensity and frequency of natural and environmental disasters and <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g impact, and face disproportionately high economic, social and<br />

environmental consequences. It calls for <strong>in</strong>creased commitments to reduce<br />

<strong>the</strong> vulnerability of Small Island Develop<strong>in</strong>g States, due to <strong>the</strong>ir limited<br />

capacity to respond to and recover from disasters.<br />

Mak<strong>in</strong>g disaster risk reduction a policy priority, <strong>in</strong>stitutional streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g<br />

SIDS have undertaken to streng<strong>the</strong>n <strong>the</strong>ir respective national frameworks<br />

for more effective disaster management.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Mauritius Strategy, Member States committed to: streng<strong>the</strong>n “<strong>the</strong><br />

ISDR and related SIDS regional mechanisms as facilities to improve national<br />

disaster mitigation, preparedness and early warn<strong>in</strong>g capacity, <strong>in</strong>crease<br />

public awareness about disaster reduction, stimulate <strong>in</strong>terdiscipl<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

and <strong>in</strong>tersectoral partnerships, and support <strong>the</strong> ma<strong>in</strong>stream<strong>in</strong>g of risk<br />

management <strong>in</strong>to <strong>the</strong> national plann<strong>in</strong>g process”.<br />

In <strong>the</strong> Brussels Programme of Action, developments partners of LDCs<br />

have committed <strong>the</strong>mselves to give “priority attention to <strong>the</strong> LDCs <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

substantive programme and <strong>in</strong>stitutional arrangements for implement<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> new International Strategy for <strong>Disaster</strong> <strong>Reduction</strong>”.<br />
