<strong>Disaster</strong> <strong>Risk</strong> <strong>Reduction</strong> <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong><br />
• Build<strong>in</strong>g capacities to <strong>in</strong>tegrate disaster risk reduction at <strong>the</strong> national<br />
level through <strong>the</strong> development of tools, such as tailored tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g<br />
packages and practical case studies.<br />
• Promot<strong>in</strong>g harmonization of disaster risk reduction approaches with<br />
key partners, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> World Bank, <strong>the</strong> ISDR and <strong>the</strong> ProVention<br />
Consortium.<br />
UNDP is undertak<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> design and development of a tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g course on<br />
ma<strong>in</strong>stream<strong>in</strong>g disaster risk reduction <strong>in</strong>to development which is aimed<br />
at government counterparts, UNCT members and UNDP staff. UNDP<br />
is undertak<strong>in</strong>g a series of pivotal pieces of analytical work aimed and<br />
streng<strong>the</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g understand<strong>in</strong>g of DRR governance and ma<strong>in</strong>stream<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
UNDP also played a key role <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> UNDG-ISDR Task Team on ma<strong>in</strong>stream<strong>in</strong>g<br />
disaster risk reduction <strong>in</strong>to to CCA-UNDAF processes.<br />
UNDP has stressed urban disaster risk reduction as an important area of<br />
engagement and undertaken a series of activities to ma<strong>in</strong>stream DRR <strong>in</strong>to<br />
urban development processes us<strong>in</strong>g global advocacy, regional partnership<br />
and local implementation toge<strong>the</strong>r with ECHO, <strong>the</strong> Earthquake and<br />
Megacities Initiative, UNISDR, International Institute for Environment and<br />
Development, UN-Habitat and ProVention Consortium.<br />

<strong>Risk</strong> assessment and early warn<strong>in</strong>g systems<br />
UNDP has established a risk identification programme (GRIP - Global <strong>Risk</strong><br />
Identification Programme) officially launched as <strong>the</strong> Official Platform for <strong>Risk</strong><br />
Identification, that works with <strong>in</strong>ternational and local expert <strong>in</strong>stitutions and<br />
authorities <strong>in</strong> five ma<strong>in</strong> aspects of risk and loss assessment. Project activities<br />
have an early emphasis on capacity development. GRIP creates an improved<br />
evidence base for disaster risk management, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>Risk</strong> Analysis, <strong>the</strong><br />
formation of a global Loss Database and global standards as well as regular<br />
updates on Global <strong>Risk</strong>s. It also develops and enhances national capacities<br />
through tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g and <strong>the</strong> formation of communities of practice.<br />
1. Demonstrations – GRIP demonstrates <strong>in</strong> a few countries that <strong>in</strong>formation<br />
on disaster risks and losses can be applied to improve risk management<br />
decisions and development outcomes.<br />
2. Capacity development – GRIP works to develop capacity by local partners<br />
to undertake risk assessments and apply <strong>the</strong> results. Activities <strong>in</strong>clude <strong>the</strong><br />
development and promotion of standards and <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong><strong>in</strong>g of national<br />
actors and <strong>in</strong>stitutions <strong>in</strong> disaster risk analysis.<br />
