General description of <strong>the</strong> organization<br />
The <strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) implements <strong>the</strong><br />
decisions of <strong>the</strong> General Assembly and of <strong>the</strong> Committee on <strong>the</strong> Peaceful<br />
Uses of Outer Space and its two Subcommittees, <strong>the</strong> Scientific and Technical<br />
Subcommittee and <strong>the</strong> Legal Subcommittee. The Office is responsible for<br />
promot<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>ternational cooperation <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> peaceful uses of outer space,<br />
and assist<strong>in</strong>g develop<strong>in</strong>g countries <strong>in</strong> us<strong>in</strong>g space science and technology.<br />
<strong>Disaster</strong> reduction goal<br />
Ensure that all countries and <strong>in</strong>ternational and regional organizations have<br />
access to and develop <strong>the</strong> capacity to use all types of space-based <strong>in</strong>formation<br />
and solutions to support <strong>the</strong> full disaster management cycle.<br />
Policies and programmes <strong>in</strong> disaster risk reduction<br />
In its resolution 61/110 of 14 December 2006 <strong>the</strong> <strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> General<br />
Assembly established <strong>the</strong> “<strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> Platform for Space-based<br />
Information for <strong>Disaster</strong> Management and Emergency Response - UN-<br />
SPIDER” as a <strong>United</strong> <strong>Nations</strong> programme, with <strong>the</strong> follow<strong>in</strong>g mission<br />
statement: “Ensure that all countries and <strong>in</strong>ternational and regional<br />
organizations have access to and develop <strong>the</strong> capacity to use all types of<br />
space-based <strong>in</strong>formation to support <strong>the</strong> full disaster management cycle”.<br />
UN-SPIDER is <strong>the</strong> first global <strong>in</strong>itiative to focus on <strong>the</strong> need to ensure access<br />
to and use of space-based <strong>in</strong>formation and solutions dur<strong>in</strong>g all phases of<br />
<strong>the</strong> disaster, <strong>in</strong>clud<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> risk reduction phase, which contributes to an<br />
<strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g reduction <strong>in</strong> loss of lives and property.<br />
UN-SPIDER is be<strong>in</strong>g implemented as an open network of providers of spacebased<br />
solutions to support disaster management activities. Besides<br />
