CONSERVATION OF ENERGY<br />

The operations of the Company involve low energy consumption. Adequate measures have however been taken to<br />

conserve energy.<br />

TECHNOLOGY ABSORPTION, ADAPTATION AND INNOVATION<br />

The Company continues to use the latest technologies for improving the productivity and quality of its services and<br />

products.<br />

RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT (R&D)<br />

Specific areas in which R&D was carried out by the Company<br />

TCS Corporate Technology Office (CTO) and TCS R&D continued to support TCS’ customers across verticals.<br />

TCS R&D and TCS Co-Innovation Network (COIN TM ) provide key differentiators across TCS’ businesses and add value to<br />

customers across different domains.<br />

TCS has stepped up patent filing and 87 patents were filed during the year in several countries. Cumulatively, TCS<br />

has filed 295 patent application of which 60 have been granted. The granted patents can be grouped into 47 patent<br />

families as per the internal classifications of TCS. During this financial year, there were 6 patent grants.<br />

A range of tools from the TCS Tools Group provided automation, process efficiencies, improvements and innovation<br />

in current business areas. TCS Innovation Labs created technologies like TCS Instant Apps and data masking tools<br />

enabling customers to improve agility and privacy. TCS’ IT Transformation Suite helped them reduce complexity. TCS<br />

labs and the COIN TM are also working on next generation platforms such as social networks for enterprises, connected<br />

marketing and analytics solutions.<br />

The TCS Home Infotainment Platform (HIP), a media and internet convergence device, and <strong>Tata</strong> Swach, a cost effective<br />

water filter, were launched with our partner ecosystem this year, exploring new business areas.<br />

TCS R&D continues to attract top research talent from India and across the world. The Company continues to support<br />

sabbaticals, internships and PhD sponsorships in research areas relevant to the Company, in premier academic<br />

institutions. Research based competencies have been introduced in the Company’s learning portal.<br />

Benefits Derived<br />

The R&D efforts of the Company have resulted in the creation of software tools and usage of these licenses internally<br />

has yielded savings of $24.8 million.<br />

Future plan of action<br />

TCS CTO and TCS R&D will strive to build customer and market delight, develop collaborative solutions and incubate<br />

disruptive solutions in the coming year. Research themes will include (but not be limited to) simplifying IT, understanding<br />

markets and customers to deliver enriched user experiences, and personalising collaboration to optimise enterprise<br />

knowledge.<br />
