Assessment task – CYPOP 1 Work with babies and young children to<br />

promote their development and learning<br />

The care and support received in the first three years of life are critical for children’s<br />

development and learning. It is essential that practitioners who work with babies and children<br />

under three years have an understanding of individual rates and sequences of development,<br />

and are able to put this learning into practice to provide the care and play opportunities which<br />

will promote development and learning.<br />

Produce an evidence folder which contains information on your understanding and skills to<br />

support the development and learning of babies and young children. It must include the<br />

following:<br />

Task 1 links to learning outcomes 1 and 3, assessment criteria 1.1, 1.2, 1.3, 1.4, 3.1, 3.2 and<br />

3.3.<br />

� an explanation of the pattern of development of babies and young children in the first<br />

three years of life and the skills typically acquired at each stage<br />

� an explanation of:<br />

- the ways in which development and learning are interconnected<br />

- how and why variations may occur in the rates and sequence of development<br />

and learning<br />

- how learning takes place in different ways<br />

- the importance of play<br />

� an explanation of the potential effects on development of babies and young children<br />

of the following experiences:<br />

- pre-conceptual<br />

- pre-birth<br />

- birth experiences<br />

� an explanation of the impact of current research into the development and learning of<br />

babies and young children<br />

� an explanation of the benefits for babies and young children of a key worker/person<br />

system in early years settings<br />

� an explanation of how babies and young children learn and develop best from a basis<br />

of loving , secure relationships with carers and with key persons in work settings<br />

� an analysis of the possible effects poor quality attachments on the development of<br />

babies and children.<br />
